Failure to follow the only available treat‐ ment, i.e., a standard gluten‐free diet (GFD), increases the risk of adverse outcomes, such as refractory cD. Studies have reported that the long‐term avoidance of a GFD may lead to the development of certain types of cancer in patients with cD. An increased risk of gastrointestinal cancers and intes‐ tinal lymphomas are associated with cD. On the other hand, recent studies have demonstrated that the risk of colon cancer, ovarian and breast cancer is low in patients with cD. It has also been demonstrated that a strict GFD exerts a positive effect in reducing the cancer risk. However, only a limited number of studies have been conducted in this area, and the outcomes of these studies warrant further verifications. The present review article summarises and discusses the possible links between cD and cancer, and the probable reasons behind their association. In addition, the present review also discusses whether a strict GFD reduces the risk of developing certain types of cancer in patients with cD.","PeriodicalId":93109,"journal":{"name":"International journal of functional nutrition","volume":"221 2 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90768788","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For thousands of years, medicinal herbs have been an integral part of traditional medicine, since a number of them exhibit potent antioxidant properties, mainly associated with their rich content in bioactive compounds. Based on these attributes, nowadays, medicinal herbs are used for industrial purposes (e.g., as natural food additives) and are also evalu‑ ated as chemopreventive strategies for diseases associated with the disruption of redox homeostasis. In that frame, the aim of the present study was to appraise the redox properties of various medicinal or edible herbs originating from the region of Epirus in Greece. The antioxidant, reducing and antigenotoxic effects of herb decoction extracts were evalu‑ ated using a series of in vitro cell‑free assays. Whereupon, non‑cytotoxic concentrations of the four most potent herb decoction extracts (i.e., Origanum vulgare, Salvia officinalis, Aloysia citrodora and Rosmarinus officinalis ) were used to treat EA.hy926 endothelial cells, and the glutathione (GSH) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels were determined using flow cytometry in order to detect the potential changes induced in the intracellular redox equilibrium. The results indicated that apart from the Rosmarinus officinalis decoction extract, which did not induce any changes following treatment, the decoction extracts of Origanum vulgare (50 µg/ml) and Salvia officinalis (10 and 20 µg/ml) induced a significant decrease in GSH levels compared with the controls, while the decoction extract of Aloysia citrodora was the most bioactive, inducing a significant decrease in GSH levels at all concentra‑ tions used (5, 10 and 20 µg/ml). On the whole, the tested herb decoction extracts exhibited a potent antioxidant capacity. In addition, the most robust of these were able to disrupt the antioxidant mechanisms of the EA.hy926 cell line, as revealed by the depletion of the intracellular GSH levels, rendering them promising contenders for further studies.","PeriodicalId":93109,"journal":{"name":"International journal of functional nutrition","volume":"87 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74487945","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Intra‑abdominal infections (IAIs) are one of the most common critical diseases in clinical practice, with high morbidity and mortality rates. A variety of abdominal diseases can lead to abdominal infection, such as acute appendicitis, acute cholecystitis, various causes of gastrointestinal perfora‑ tion, post‑operative complications and trauma. It has been demonstrated that probiotics are of utmost significance in improving the treatment and prognosis of patients with IAIs. Probiotics play a beneficial role in the host's metabolism, immunity and nervous system by interacting with the host microorganisms, preventing the colonization of pathogens, improving intestinal barrier function, regulating immune function and producing related metabolites. The aim of the present review article was to discuss and summarize the regu‑ latory effect of probiotics on intestinal barrier dysfunction and immunological imbalance in IAIs, in order to provide a foun‑ dation for the development of novel therapeutic approaches and disease prevention measures.","PeriodicalId":93109,"journal":{"name":"International journal of functional nutrition","volume":"6 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82495593","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the present study, under free‑living conditions, 30 breastfed children, aged 6 to 23 months, were successively fed three complementary porridges in order to examine the effect of energy density (ED) and sweetness on energy and nutrient intake (ENI). Two high ED porridges, such as malted (Fg3, 124.92 kcal), fermented (F3, 120.36 kcal) and low ED porridge (G1, 60 kcal) were consumed. The sucrose content of the high and low ED porridges was 15 and 5%, respec‑ tively. The results revealed that the amount consumed of F3 (282.2 ml for group 1, 6 to 11 months old; and 365 ml for group 2, 12 to 23 months old) was higher than that of Fg3 (231.20 and 331.30 ml for groups 1 and 2, respectively) and G1 (105 and 129.10 ml for groups 1 and 2, respectively). Despite the amounts consumed of Fg3, the ENI from Fg3 was higher than that of F3 and G1. The consumption of F3 and Fg3 increased the energy intake (EI) by 74 and 78%, respec‑ tively (23.25 and 26.56 vs. 5.97 Kcal/kg/meal; P<0.001) in group 1 and by 78 and 83%, respectively (24.37 and 30.82 vs. 5.24 Kcal/kg/meal; P<0.001) in group 2 in comparison with the EI from G1. Thus, the consumption of sweet porridge with a high ED (Fg3) composed of local ingredients increased, at least by 78 and 83%, in the infants of group 1 and 2, respec‑ tively, the EI from porridges in comparison with the EI from low the ED porridge, G1. The ENI was significantly (P<0.001) higher with the sweetness and dry matter of porridges than with the low sweetness and dry matter porridge. consequently, Fg3 has a high coverage and this permits it to cover >36%","PeriodicalId":93109,"journal":{"name":"International journal of functional nutrition","volume":"30 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89946898","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These naturally occurring fruit plants can thrive well under adverse climatic conditions and are being harvested and marketed locally. Pyrus pashia (P. pashia; Buch.‐Ham. ex D. Don; family, Rosaceae), commonly known as ‘wild edible or Himalayan pear’ is one of such underutilized trees. It is widely distributed in temperate regions up to an altitude of 2,000 m in Western Himalaya. It has broad applications in traditional therapeutics for the treatment of diseases, such as eye infections, sore throat, diarrhea, stomach disorders and other infectious diseases. Chlorogenic acid, flavan‐3‐ols, gallic acid, tannins, alkaloids, hydroquinone, terpenoids and its isomers have been isolated and identified from the leaf, fruit, flower and bark portion of P. pashia. The phytochemi‐ cals present in the P. pashia tree may be responsible for the traditional beneficial health effects of the plant. Numerous scientific studies on P. pashia have validated the general uses of the plant by the native population; however, the data on its pharmacological properties and the mechanisms involved are insufficient. The present review aimed to provide a critical evaluation of the distribution, traditional uses, phytochemicals present, pharmacological activities and nutritional value of different plant parts of P. pashia. Detailed research is required on individual phytochemicals present and toxicological studies at the gene level. In‐depth molecular studies may also confirm the various pharmaceutical claims for the development of novel pharmaceutical drugs and functional food products.","PeriodicalId":93109,"journal":{"name":"International journal of functional nutrition","volume":"122 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79006601","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The fruits of Pithecellobium dulce ( P. dulce ) are edible, and have been consumed in Asian countries. They are considered a dense source of proteins, fats, carbohydrates and vitamins. The present study aimed to explore the antioxidant ( in vitro and in vivo ) effects of the fruit extract of P. dulce (FPD) against methotrexate (MTX)‑induced hepatic and renal toxicities in a BALB/c mouse model. A preliminary qualitative analysis of FPD was carried out following standard proce‑ dures. The in vitro antioxidant efficacy of FPD was evaluated by different free radical scavenging assays. In order to further validate the protective effects of FPD, an expansive in vivo experimental strategy was developed. Oxidative stress was induced in mice by an intraperitoneal (i.p) injection of MTX (20 mg/kg body weight). The protective effects of FPD against MTX‑induced oxidative stress were evaluated following the oral administration of FPD at 40 mg/kg body weight for 10 consecutive days. Preliminary qualitative analysis of FPD revealed the presence of several active phyto‑components. The in vitro antioxidant efficacy of FPD was evaluated, and a concentration‑dependent increment in antioxidant activity was observed. These data from the cell free system represent a clear approximation of the antioxidant status of potential bioactive constituents. The administration of FPD significantly reduced MTX‑induced serum hepatic and renal toxicity marker enzymes. The co‑administration of FPD also reduced the levels of tissue oxidative stress markers and enhanced the anti‑ oxidant status in the liver, kidneys and lungs of mice compared with the MTX alone group. FPD also reversed MTX‑induced pancytopenia. Furthermore, the protective effects of FPD were confirmed by tissue histopathological analysis. Additionally, treatment with FPD markedly reduced the MTX‑induced increase in the levels of serum pro‑inflammatory cytokines, such as TNF‑ α , IL‑1 β and IL‑6. On the whole, the findings of the present study strongly ascertain the antioxidant efficacy of FPD and its role in mitigating MTX‑induced tissue injury.","PeriodicalId":93109,"journal":{"name":"International journal of functional nutrition","volume":"38 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84335252","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Triple‑negative breast cancer (TNBC) lacks the expression of estrogen receptor‑ α (ER‑ α ), progesterone receptor (PR) and amplified human epidermal growth factor receptor‑2 (HER‑2). Current treatments involve chemo‑ therapy and molecular targeted therapy. These options lead to dose‑limiting systemic toxicity and acquired tumor resis‑ tance. Moreover, no drug is yet available for the secondary prevention of TNBC. Such limitations underscore a need to investigate non‑toxic testable alternatives for the secondary prevention/treatment of TNBC. The Chinese nutritional herb, Psoralea corylifolia (PC), has been shown to be effective against the MCF‑7 cell line, a cellular model for ER‑ α ‑positive breast cancer. The present study aimed to investigate the growth inhibitory effects of PC against TNBC using the MDA‑MB‑231 cell line. Anchorage‑independent colony forma‑ tion, cell cycle progression, cellular apoptosis, RB signaling and caspase‑3/7 activity assays were performed to determine the quantitative parameters for the efficacy of PC. Treatment with PC induced a 3.5‑fold increase in the G 1 : S + G 2 /M ratio, an 11‑fold increase in the apoptotic cell number and a 149‑fold increase in caspase‑3/7 activity. PC treatment also decreased cyclin D1, CDK4/6 and p‑RB expression levels. Current concerns over the modern health status have been transpired due to the desire of consumers to gain the benefits of quality biofunctional foods, and the will of producers to improve the scalability of their products. The constant flow of scientific knowledge and technology manifests the progressive exploitation of the biological capacity of foods to produce an economic output. Therefore, the assessment of specific properties that agricultural products contain, is a prerequisite prior to their entering the market. In the present review article, a wide array of methodologies is proposed which may be used to evaluate the antioxidant, reductive and DNA protective capacity of honey at cell‑free, cell‑based in vitro and in vivo experimental levels. This proposed array is compiled by non‑laborious techniques that do not demand sophisticated and expensive equipment. Moreover, they can be followed by scientists to screen different honey batches and other agricultural goods that will allow enhanced repeatability and comparability among studies.","PeriodicalId":93109,"journal":{"name":"International journal of functional nutrition","volume":"198 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90057957","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
