Despite the potential for acquiring language skills in EMI courses, characterized by authentic communication as L2-medium settings, linguistic education tends to be marginalized in these environments. As a result, the development of disciplinary literacy among students might be compromised. This research aims to explore the incorporation of problem-based activities as a means to create meaningful communication environments within English for Specific Purposes (ESP) settings. These settings focus on language learning, addressing the English language education needs of university students to promote disciplinary literacy and enhance academic skills in English. The study first outlines the connection between problem-solving and interaction in second language learning. Subsequently, it delves into the cognitive processes engendered by problem-solving and their relevance for ESP settings. While it is generally agreed that teachers should provide scaffolding to students when introducing AWE to the class, a paucity of research has an explicit focus on investigating methods for optimizing the integration of AWE feedback. To fill the gap, the present study proposed a research-informed integration of AWE based on the literature and explored empirically its impact on students’ writing performance and their perceived usefulness of AWE feedback in the context of Chinese EFL undergraduates. Data of the study include writing scores and student responses to a questionnaire. The study found that the student participants made significant improvements in content, organization, and holistic score, but not in accuracy, and they seemed to perceive the automated feedback more positively after the intervention. However, little research has attempted to explore this relationship with productive word knowledge. Additionally, the contribution of various gaming genres to the relationship is particularly underexplored. The present mixed-method study fills these lacunas by employing a productive vocabulary levels test, a questionnaire, and semi-structured interviews to explore the relationship between 35 different leisure activities that English as a foreign language (EFL) learners engage in outside the classroom and their productive vocabulary growth. The study’s findings revealed that although learners frequently engaged in different activities, they spent most of their free time gaming, which contributed the most to productive word knowledge learning. Regression analysis showed that two gaming genres, massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) and first-person shooters, significantly predicted productive knowledge of words. The paper shows that ZSA possesses two types of free relative clauses, viz., nominal free relative clauses and adverbial free relative clauses. The focus of the paper is on nominal free relative clauses. It is shown that nominal free relative clauses can appear in a subject position and a direct object position, and the range of relativization involves subject, direct object, indirect object, prepositional object and possessor relativization. The derivation of free relatives in ZSA involves resumption relativization strategy only where gaps are treated as null resumptive pronouns. As for distribution of null and overt resumptive clitics, there is an alternation between the use of null and overt resumptive pronouns/clitics in subject and direct object position. However, the utilization of overt resumptive pronouns/clitics is mandatory in indirect object, prepositional object and possessor position. It is argued that the free relative markers illi: and mi:n are complementizers. Furthermore, as null and overt resumptive clitics exhibit a big resemblance with respect to their behaviour in the coordinate structures and parasitic gaps, both free relatives with null or resumptive pronouns/clitics involve a null operator movement (in non-island contexts) from inside the free relative clause to the specifier of a complementizer phrase (spec CP). It was not until 1980 that two cognitive linguists, George Lakoff and Mark Johnson (1980) argued in Metaphors We Live By that the essence of metaphor is the cognitive mechanism by which abstract things are explained through concrete things, shifting the study of metaphor from the linguistic level to the cognitive level. Later on, Lakoff (1996) analyzed political metaphor from a cognitive perspective for the first time in Moral Politics, which drives the upsurge of research on conceptual metaphor in political discourse. Political discourse usually uses metaphor to conceptualize the political ideas and issues it aims to disseminate, and the use of conceptual metaphor is closely related to national culture, so the translation of conceptual metaphor has become the key to the overseas publicity of political discourse. On March 5, 2023, Premier Li Keqiang delivered Chinese Government Work Report at the opening meeting of the first session of the 14th National People’s Congress. After reading the official translation on www.china.org.cn, the authors find that the Report contains a wealth of conceptual metaphors, and whether the translation of these metaphors is appropriate or not will affect the accuracy of people’s understanding of the Report. Based on Lakoff and Johnson’s (1980) conceptual metaphor theory and Group’s (2007) metaphor identification procedure, this paper takes the 2023 Chinese Government Work Report and its English translation version on www.china.org.cn as the research corpus. Through manual screening, classification and statistics of conceptual metaphors, this paper explores ten types of conceptual metaphor models, namely human metaphor, journey metaphor, war metaphor, cultural metaphor, architecture metaphor, water metaphor, animal and plant metaphor, machine metaphor, line metaphor as well as object metaphor. Based on Xiao’s (2005) cognitive strategy of metaphor translation, this paper also analyzes the translation of ten types of conceptual metaphors. This paper attempts to explore the following three research questions: (1) What are the types of metaphorical patterns in the Report? (2) How are the conceptual metaphors used in the Report and what cultural connotations and images are conveyed by them? (3) How to effectively translate conceptual metaphors in the Report to achieve a better understanding of the target audience? Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) is used as a statistical tool and a mapping tool to count specific conceptual metaphor categories and record typical metaphor keywords, and visualize the data of the proportion of various types. This paper tries to summarize and analyze the cultural connotations and images conveyed by the conceptual metaphors, so as to provide help for the English translation of Chinese political discourse and promote the international dissemination of Chinese political ideas. The study investigates how AI transforms university-level EFL students’ academic writing skills, aiming to revolutionize their approach to written language for academic success despite language barriers. Using a mixed-methods approach, this study investigates the perspectives of fifty first-year female students at Al-Baha University, Saudi Arabia, during the 2023–2024 academic year, employing both qualitative and quantitative data analysis. Using a 5-point Likert-type questionnaire and Zoom interviews, the study clarifies EFL students’ perceptions of AI writing tools. Results from the questionnaire highlight the active usage of tools such as Grammarly and GPT-3 among students. Students favor the integration AI tools into coursework, although the level of support from instructors varies. EFL students see the positive impact on writing quality but remain unsure about confidence improvement. Interviews reveal diverse tool usage, with Grammarly and ChatGPT notably favored for their adaptability and cost-free nature. The study supports integrating AI writing tools into EFL university education, emphasizing benefits such as enhanced writing quality, time efficiency, and bolstered academic integrity. The paper highlights AI’s significant impact on EFL university students’ writing skills in today’s digitally reliant world where English holds key communication importance. It underscores AI-powered tools as valuable complements to conventional writing skills, emphasizing equitable access, guidance, and collaboration between AI and educators. It is found that the topics chosen by mainland media are different from that of the Western media, and the acceptance of the reports of the three central mainland media in foreign readers is not remarkably high. Based on this research, this paper applied Kenneth Burke’s identification theory into news translation practice. It shows four translation approaches such as literal translation, amplification, omission, and adaptation can be used in the process of news translation to achieve narrative identification. Following a qualitative approach, we collected her various translation drafts, memos and interviews as the research data. By referring to the translation competence model containing five parts proposed by Zhang and Wang (2020), we conducted detailed analyses on her translation drafts and memos. It is found that her overall translation competence shows an upward trend, with her specialized knowledge competence and instrumental competence improving the most rapidly. Her linguistic abilities and cognitive abilities, particularly in translating complex sentences, have also demonstrated a significant progress. The interview transcripts have been used to explore her identification with the translator’s role.
