Both teachers and students acknowledge their own mother tongue, as well as the language of instruction and assessment, which is usually English. What is not acknowledged is the personal and individual student experience of language: what do students feel as they negotiate words, phrases, sentences and paragraphs into their spoken and written communication? What is their experience as they think in isiXhosa, translate into spoken English, then convert into English for academic purposes? This paper examines the personal narrative of four students who describe their experience of being mother tongue isiXhosa speakers trying to succeed in an education context where the language of instruction is English. It relates their achievements, strengths and fears, exposing an underlying teaching and learning crisis that is silently present in every multilingual South African classroom. Their experience relates directly to re-educating the teacher in terms of methodology, assessment and classroom interaction. Negotiating personal experience based on language has the potential for diverse pathways for education in multilingual contexts.","PeriodicalId":90007,"journal":{"name":"Literacy information and computer education journal","volume":"101 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67675642","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, such solutions must involve and engage students to perform learning activities to develop their statistical thinking. In this scenario, this study proposes the design of a gamified e-learning system to involve students when they perform learning activities. We analyze students’ behavior towards statistics activities when using the environment. To achieve these goals, this project focuses on a gamified structure for the development of learning activities with a reward system. The learning activities are based on question and answers developed by teachers to measure the students’ understanding of different course contents and also provide them with a problem-based approach. The project was applied in a Probability and Statistics course during 30 days. The results suggest a positive outcome mostly because the designed gamification elements achieved their desired role inside the environment.","PeriodicalId":90007,"journal":{"name":"Literacy information and computer education journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45722279","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study is designed to explore the pupil teachers’ opinions about favoritism, further to identify the dominant factor of teachers’ favoritism at Institute of Education and Research (IER), University of the Punjab, Lahore. The participants were the pupil teachers’ enrolled in Master Degree Programme of session (2015-2017). 225 pupil teachers were selected by non-proportional stratified random sampling method. Adapted questionnaire was used in this study which was developed by Dr. Ismail Aydogan (2008) in Turkey. Instrument contained of 28 statements which further divided into its four subscales: nature of preference, violation of rules, students’ assessment and terms of communication. Descriptive and Inferential statistical techniques were applied to analyze to data. Results exhibited that majority of pupil teachers agreed that educators give favor to female pupil teachers throughout the educational career. The “nature of preference” is the dominant factor of teachers’ favoritism at Institute of Education and Research which shows that teachers give performance to socially well-placed, beautifulhandsome, relative and ideologically closed learners. It was concluded that there was insignificant difference in the opinions of pupil teachers about favouritism with respect to gender and program (morning and self-support). It is recommended that for accountability determination the management need to develop casual contacts with the learners.","PeriodicalId":90007,"journal":{"name":"Literacy information and computer education journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45544075","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (BUAN), like many other academic institutions, is undergoing reforms in its education processes in response to these technological effects on higher education. One such reform is an attempt at introducing e-learning and learning management systems. The purpose of this study was to subject BUAN lecturers to the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), a well-established theoretical model, to predict their acceptance level of Moodle. A quantitative research approach was used to conduct the survey with a questionnaire used to collect required data from 50 BUAN lecturers who volunteered to participate. The results revealed that participants perceived Moodle easy to use hence consider that it will be useful in their working environment. This study confirmed TAM to be a useful theoretical model in helping to understand and explain behavioural intention to use Moodle. As has been widely argued in literature that TAM is effective in predicting the acceptance of technology, the results of this study demonstrated that TAM is effective in predicting the possibility of acceptance of Moodle by BUAN lecturers. The researchers argue that, based on the results from this study, Moodle should be fully implemented at BUAN in order to facilitate the teaching and learning process.","PeriodicalId":90007,"journal":{"name":"Literacy information and computer education journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43605723","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent research in Luxembourgish preschool, Year 1 and Year 2 classes, show that teachers have begun to implement such pedagogies by encouraging the deployment of the students’ full linguistic repertoires, including their home languages. Little attention has however been paid to the later years of primary school where the achievement gap between students with and without a migration background is particularly high. The present qualitative longitudinal study focusses on students in Years 4 and 5 and examines to what extent they deploy their linguistic repertoires in interaction with their peers. Drawing on observations, recordings and interviews, this paper explores the language use of two Portuguese-speaking 4 graders in Language and Arts lessons. Findings show that the students mobilize their linguistic and cultural resources to different extents and, hereby, open or close translingual discursive spaces for further exchange. The findings should contribute to the understanding of multilingual students’ language practices and provide insight into how their linguistic and cultural resources can be capitalized on.","PeriodicalId":90007,"journal":{"name":"Literacy information and computer education journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43131587","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Literature shows poor composition skills is a common issue among the junior secondary learners ranging from classroom level to national level G.C.E. Ordinary Level examination. Thus, the current study explores the issue of low performance in writing based questions of the secondary ESL students in a type C school in the western province. A sample of forty (40) students from grade ten (10) studying English as a Second Language (ESL) was taken to the study from convenience sampling. Initially semistructured interviews were conducted on the matter investigated with the principal, a few students and the two ESL teachers in grade ten of the selected school. Since their perceptions on the matter were merely taken to activate their schemata for the study, the data were not considered for analysis. A questionnaire was administered among the students, and then a pre-test and a post-test were given on an ESL composition task resembling an item in the O/L English language paper during the intervention process. Their scores were collected and the mean difference was recorded. A slight improvement was seen after utilizing the process writing approach via VARK model.","PeriodicalId":90007,"journal":{"name":"Literacy information and computer education journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48888038","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A significant question mark remains as to its success and response to it. The main purpose of this paper is to identify students' attitudes towards using Hybrid MOOCs with Flipped classrooms, as compared to traditional methods (face-to-face) during teaching the 'Educational Technology and Communication Skills' module. The research took place at Majmaah University for undergraduate students in the Faculty of Education in the first semester of the academic year 2017/2018. This research adopted a mixed-method approach comprising survey (quantitative approach) and semistructured interview (qualitative approach) tools. The results of the study indicate that students have positive attitudes toward using Hybrid MOOCs with Flipped Classrooms. In addition, student participants mention that Hybrid MOOCs with Flipped Classrooms have a strong potential in helping them learn according to their individual abilities, inside as well as outside the classroom. This research is one if the few of its kind ever done in Saudi Arabia, and contributes to filling a noticeable gap in the literature. In addition, the study's implications can be used for future policy making within the country's Ministry of Education.","PeriodicalId":90007,"journal":{"name":"Literacy information and computer education journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44165532","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
