A total of 159 myxosporean species were described in South American waters until December 2016. These species were distributed by 24 genera, infecting 114 different host species in seven countries. Here, we present an update of the species described in South American countries from January 2017 to the present date, or those for which molecular data were made available in GenBank during this period. A total of 105 species distributed by 13 genera, parasitizing 59 host species are depicted in tabulated format including the species characteristics. Reports of infection with these parasites were found only in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Peru. The most common parasites were Myxobolus spp. and Henneguya spp., and freshwater fish were about four times more parasitized than saltwater ones. Thus, the knowledge of myxosporean diversity in South America seems to be shaped more by the presence of research groups in each country than by the continent’s biogeographical conditions. In recent years, freshwater ecosystems in South America have become the site of discovery for a significant diversity of myxosporean genera previously associated with marine environments.
","PeriodicalId":8978,"journal":{"name":"Biologia","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2024-08-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142196934","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unfortunately, very little is known about the extent, causes, and frequency of this phenomenon. Therefore, in this paper, we investigate a scale of vandalism in studies using nest-boxes in Poland. Data from published papers (n = 256) indicated that researchers are aware of the devastation and destruction of nest-boxes, but often lacking detailed reports. We further validated this data through emails or phone calls to the authors. Surprisingly, only 14 (5.5%) papers mentioned vandalism, and during interviews, we found that vandalism occurred in 51.7% of studies. In response to vandalism, researchers have taken measures to reduce the scale of damages, such as hanging boxes far from paths and roads, placing them above 3 m from the ground, or, more recently, using security cameras. Although vandalism was quite common, its scale was rather marginal, with some local exceptions. For a better understanding of this phenomenon, we suggest including more detailed information on vandalism in future papers, which could aid in the interpretation of scientific data, as well as in nature conservation.
","PeriodicalId":8978,"journal":{"name":"Biologia","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2024-08-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142196932","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Among the whole genome sequences, it was observed that the C. neoformans isolate JEC21 exhibited the most elevated RA (165.3) and RD (2471.8) of SSRs. Conversely, among the transcriptome sequences, the C. neoformans isolate KN99 displayed the greatest RA (145.5) of SSRs. Among the classes of SSRs, trinucleotide repeats exhibited a higher prevalence in both the genomic sequences (50%) and transcriptome sequences (65%) over other repeats. Motif conservation analysis among the isolates demonstrated that 41.1% of motifs were conserved among the isolates of C. neoformans. The study also found unique motifs that could potentially serve as molecular probes for the purpose of isolate identification. Therefore, it is important to understand how their evolution and demographic parameters have changed throughout time. Since salinity is a relevant condition in the soils around the World and particularly in Mexico, the major goal of the current research is to understand the life cycle strategies of two springtail species from saline soils in Mexico. The studied species are Clavisotoma filifera and Brachystomella gabrielae, both widely distributed in Mexico, but their development or life history strategies are unknown. We found from laboratory cultures that C. filifera had a shorter life cycle and a faster reproduction rate than B. gabrielae. Nevertheless, both species show the same number of developmental stages, but there are interspecific differences in their duration. Although both species continuously reproduce throughout the year, the reproductive rate is lower in the months that are associated with the dry season at the source site. Additionally, we discovered variations in both the size and number of eggs in each species. It was found that the species under study had various life strategies for growth in the same environment. Clavisotoma filifera shows a more r-focused strategy (high fecundity, numerous offspring, shorter gestation and faster maturity), B. gabrielae shows an opposite strategy, closer to q strategy, with a lower fecundity, larger eggs, fewer reproductive events and slower maturity.
","PeriodicalId":8978,"journal":{"name":"Biologia","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2024-08-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142196964","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The behaviour of spiders is controlled by the central nervous system like in other animals. Spiders contain several types of sensory organs that help them recognize their surroundings. These sensory organs may have mechanoreceptor or chemoreceptor functions. All parts of the spider’s body contain different hairs, sensillae, setae and spines. The function of sensory structures is affected by their site in the spider’s body. This study aimed at describing different types, distribution and functions of sensory organs of five ground spiders inhabiting Assiut Governorate, Egypt. Fifty samples of spider specimens were collected by hand picking and pitfall traps during years 2016 and 2017 from different habitats. The specimens were examined under a binocular stereomicroscope and scanning electron microscope. The study revealed the presence of sensory organs on different body parts of the studied spiders, including sensilla trichodea, sensilla placodea, sensilla basiconica, sensilla styloconica, setae, trichobothria and slit sense organs (Lyriform organs). The objectives of this investigation encompassed: i) assessment of extended spectrum ß-lactamase (ESBL) synthesis and other forms of antibiotic resistance, ii) characterization of biofilm formation, adhesin (fimH), and capsule (uge) virulence genes, and iii) exploration of the existence of Class-1 integron (intI1) within the isolates. A total of 120 K. pneumoniae were obtained from clinical specimens and identified with automatic Vitek®2 compact systems. The rates of resistance to various antibiotics were as follows: levofloxacin 89.1%, amoxicillin-clavulanic acid 69.1%, ceftazidime 60%, fosfomycin 59.1%, aztreonam 57.5%, nalidixic acid 56.6%, piperacillin-tazobactam 54.1%, tobramycin 44.1%, chloramphenicol 40%, gentamycin and meropenem 39.1%, imipenem 35.8%. Combined disc testing identified 28 isolates (23.3%) as ESBL-producing K. pneumoniae. The frequency of genes encoding ESBLs is reported as follows: blaTEM 10 (8.3%), blaSHV 42 (35%), and blaCTX-M-I 23 (19.1%). The virulence genes encountered in isolates were adhesin and capsule, 22.5% fimH and 21.6% uge, respectively. The intI1 gene was detected in 70 (58.3%) isolates. These strategies, such as chemical signals and calling songs, fuel competition for mates and can lead to the evolution of distinct courtship behaviours within a species. These behaviours often involve males and females taking on different roles in attracting mates. For example, limitations in signal production or perception can make one of the sexes sedentary. Regarding Poecilimon bushcrickets specifically, in 2012 McCartney et al. proposed a theory to explain sex role differentiation within the mate-searching system in certain species. According to this model, sex roles in mate-searching systems propose that in species where females search for males, females should receive a larger spermatophore gift. This study tests this theory for two Poecilimon species with differing strategies in terms of females’ response to male calling songs regarding spermatophore investment (P. sureyanus-female searching and P. inflatus-male searching). Given that reproductive effort and physiological activities are both costly for the organism, there is a trade-off due to limited energy resources. To investigate the specific trade-off in allocating resources between reproductive functions and immune defence in these species, the presents study compared two immune parameters (phenoloxidase and lytic activities). In nature, immune activities are much more plastic than the differentiation of reproductive traits between the sexes. The results showed that spermatophore investment may critically depend on differences in mate-searching strategies, particularly in terms of females’ response to male calling songs within the species. The findings also indicated that there may be trade-offs between the costs related to reproduction and the immune system.
","PeriodicalId":8978,"journal":{"name":"Biologia","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2024-08-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141881769","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
