This design is illustrated in the context of exploring influential family factors for youth with learning and mental health concerns. The use of case propositions as a central point of integration is highlighted. The integration of the quantitative and qualitative findings demonstrated the multifaceted psychological and relational issues, including parental monitoring, parent mental health, and youth self-efficacy. These meta-inferences provide surprising insight into the complex family experiences of youth with learning disabilities. Implications for theory and research are explored, concluding with a call for more multilevel mixed methods research using secondary data analysis.","PeriodicalId":89571,"journal":{"name":"International journal of multiple research approaches","volume":"12 1","pages":"166-184"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43943846","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Poetry, with its innate capacity for leveraging human creativity, and like arts-based research more generally, which can provide holistic and complexity-based perspectives through various approaches to data collection, analysis, and representation, can offer something of interest to dialogue on integration in mixed methods research. Therefore, in this editorial, we discuss and promote the use of poetry in mixed methods research. We contend that the complexities and mean-making parallelisms between poetry and mixed methods research render them relevant partners in a quest to complete the hermeneutic circle whose origin represents experiences, phenomena, information, and/or the like. We advance the notion that including poetic representation facilitates the mixed methods research process as a dynamic, iterative, interactive, synergistic, integrative, holistic, embodied, creative, artistic, and transformational meaning-making process that opens up a new epistemological, theoretical, and methodological space. We refer to this as the fourth space, where the quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods, and poetic research traditions intersect to enable different and deeper levels of meaning making to occur. We end our editorial with a poetic representation driven by a word count analysis of our editorial and that synthesizes our thoughts regarding the intersection of poetry and mixed methods research within this fourth space—a representation that we have entitled, “Dear Article.”","PeriodicalId":89571,"journal":{"name":"International journal of multiple research approaches","volume":"12 1","pages":"153-165"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44372932","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

First, we outline how the strengths of using nonparametric statistics outweighs the limitations. Second, we demonstrate empirically how infrequently nonparametric statistics appear in a flagship journal (i.e., Journal of Mixed Methods Research [JMMR]). We document that relatively few JMMR authors use nonparametric analyses to analyze qualitative data. Third, we provide a heuristic example from the extant literature to exemplify the use of nonparametric statistics in mixed research studies. Finally, we introduce a meta-framework for using nonparametric statistics in mixed research studies. Our article contributes to the mixed research literature by promoting increased rigor in particular and ethicality in general during the mixed analysis process.","PeriodicalId":89571,"journal":{"name":"International journal of multiple research approaches","volume":"12 1","pages":"135-152"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45203934","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By early April, 10 universities announced that they were planning to resume teaching and learning online, including the University of the Witwatersrand (i.e., Wits University), Johannesburg, which is the joint highest ranked university in Africa. Therefore, the purpose of this editorial was to examine the perceptions and attitudes of these students regarding online learning in an era of disruption of COVID-19, uniquely using both multi-mixed methods research approaches (i.e., involving the partial integration of multiple methods research approaches and mixed methods research approaches) and meta-methods study approaches (i.e., involving the full[er] integration of multiple methods research approaches and mixed methods research approaches). A total of 4,419 Wits University students completed an online survey. A principal components analysis of one of survey’s scales, namely, the Attitude of Students Towards COVID-19 and its Impact on Higher Education scale, revealed 2 subscales, namely, Students’ Self-regulation Towards COVID-19-Based Higher Education and Attitudes Toward Teaching, Learning, and Assessment in COVID-19-Based Higher Education. Nonparametric analyses revealed that scores on these measures discriminated gender, age group, level of student (i.e., undergraduate vs. postgraduate), locality status (i.e., local vs. international student), and registration status (i.e., full-time vs. part-time). A multiple analysis of the open-ended responses by the VOSviewer 1.6.14 text mining software program led to the identification of 6 metathemes. Similarly, WordStat 8.0.29 topic modeling yielded 5 metathemes that mapped onto VOSviewer’s 6 metathemes, indicating triangulation of findings. A sentiment analysis revealed negative sentiments that identified not only the biggest challenges for students but also the characteristics of students who experience these challenges. Finally, a cluster analysis, combined with chi-square analyses, led to the identification of 4 clusters of students who differed with respect to their attitudes and online experiences. Implications of these findings are discussed.","PeriodicalId":89571,"journal":{"name":"International journal of multiple research approaches","volume":"1 1","pages":"20-55"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49512642","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite growing trends in the prevalence of mixed methods research across disciplines and the extensive methodological literature about this approach, little is known about the actual MMR practices of graduate students, such as writing an abstract. To address this gap, this methodological review used qualitative and quantitative approaches to examine 869 abstracts of doctoral dissertations and master’s theses that were labeled as MMR and published between 2013 and 2018 in the ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global database. The results of this study indicated that a great number of institutions and disciplines have supported the use of MMR in doctoral dissertations and master’s theses. In addition, we found that the prevalence of MMR elements in the abstracts of culminating projects was highly varied. MMR element prevalence analysis revealed relatively common (e.g., qualitative methods, quantitative methods, mixed methods design) and relatively uncommon (e.g., sequence/timing of qualitative and quantitative strands, mixed methods rationale, priority, integration techniques, added value of using MMR) reporting practices. Implications for faculty involved in graduate education and mixed methods researchers are discussed.","PeriodicalId":89571,"journal":{"name":"International journal of multiple research approaches","volume":"1 1","pages":"110-128"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42679307","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One way to prepare researchers, through mentoring, has long been considered as being one of the most impactful learning experiences because of its developmental and relational focus. Mentoring often focuses on building specific skills to support the mentee’s personal and professional development. Inspired by issues of mentor capacity and the potential of a synergistic mentoring framework advanced by Frels, Newman, and Newman (2015), this commentary describes promising practices for promoting sustainability within mixed methods research mentoring approaches. In closing, we encourage the global mixed methods research community to consider the practical implications of designing and implementing an effective synergistic and sustainable mentoring approach for mixed methods researchers.","PeriodicalId":89571,"journal":{"name":"International journal of multiple research approaches","volume":"1 1","pages":"56-64"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46371828","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We demonstrate that meta-generative thinking goes further than do other research synthesis techniques (e.g., meta-analysis) because it involves meta-synthesis not only across studies but also within studies—thereby representing a multimethod approach. We describe how meta-generative thinking can be maximized/optimized with respect to quantitative research data/findings via the use of Bayesian methodology that has been shown to be superior to the inherently flawed null hypothesis significance testing. We contend that Bayesian meta-generative thinking is essential, given the potential for divisiveness and far-reaching sociopolitical, educational, and health policy implications of findings that lack generativity in a post-truth and COVID-19 era.","PeriodicalId":89571,"journal":{"name":"International journal of multiple research approaches","volume":"1 1","pages":"4-19"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42603501","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Women (n = 149) completed surveys composed of open- and closed-ended items. Focused ethnographies were conducted at all affiliates. Multiple linear regressions revealed no differences between affiliates with respect to women’s body image, self-esteem, and eating behaviors. Conversely, thematic analysis of open-ended items and ethnographic observations revealed positive (e.g., community, food as fuel) and negative (e.g., self-comparison, restriction) influences on all psychosocial variables, with most themes reoccurring across all affiliates. Future researchers should seek to compare affiliates from different geographical/cultural regions.","PeriodicalId":89571,"journal":{"name":"International journal of multiple research approaches","volume":"1 1","pages":"78-95"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44860601","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

More specifically, we analyzed in which ways, and how effectively, people draw boundaries in social interaction. That is, we studied ways in which people distinguish between group members and outsiders. Our study included a group of active Christians (n = 20) and non-religious individuals (n = 19) in Finland. We conceptualized the Imitation Game as a mixed data collection instrument because it combines both qualitative and quantitative data in an integrated manner. As part of our analysis, we introduce an indicator called the Sequential Identification Ratio (SIR), which is an indicator of how accurately participants draw boundaries in the Imitation Game. The results based on the SIR indicate that group boundaries are established with 4 different strategies: experiential, epistemic, axiological, and linguistic. Finally, we show how a mixed methods researcher can conduct a form of quantitizing to use both quantitative and qualitative aspects of Imitation Game data.","PeriodicalId":89571,"journal":{"name":"International journal of multiple research approaches","volume":"1 1","pages":"96-109"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44797731","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
