Nurses account for more than half of the catheterisation conducted within hospitals. Due to this reason, it was important to identify whether nursing practice on the management of indwelling urinary catheter was in the reflection of the current national guidelines. The survey is conducted on 32 participants who reveal the strengths and limitation within the areas. Nurses account for more than half of the catheterisation conducted within the hospital. In order to prevent CAUTI complication, the research suggested training and education as the main solution since nurses significantly exhibited poor performance in terms of knowledge and skills in the area of catheterisation, especially in the induction process. Moreover, the study reveals that the use of bladder scan and system intervention which has been identified to reduce the number of catheter insertions contributes to the reduction of urinary bacterial infection.
Does Uro-Oncology Nursing Education Decrease the need for Out of Home Care\u0000following Radical Cystectomy? An Observational Study
Objective: Our aim is to evaluate the effects of uro-oncology nursing education program on quality of life, general health\u0000status and the need for out of home care following radical cystectomy\u0000Materials and methods: The datas of 60 patients who were underwent radical cystectomy due to bladder cancer and followed\u0000up between January 2013 and December 2017 were retrospectively evaluated. We have prepared a special education program\u0000for our nurses about uro-oncological surgeries and the follow-up process since January 2015. Patients were divided into two\u0000groups: 28 patients before nursing education and 32 patients after nursing education. We compared the patient satisfaction,\u0000the quality of health care given to the patients by nurses and the requirement of need for out of home care following discharge\u0000in the periods before and after nursing education.\u0000Results: Although uro-oncology nursing education did not affect the rates of deterioration in activities of daily living, satisfaction\u0000rates of the patients and their relatives were observed as significantly higher in the period of following the Uro-Oncology\u0000Nursing Education Program (90.6% vs. 71.4%, p=0.04). The decline in anxiety/depression (28.1% vs. 53.6%, p=0.04) in\u0000this period was attributed to the nursing education. The patients and their relatives felt themselves better and in confidence\u0000about coping with undesirable problems related to cystectomy. Parallel to this situation, the need for out of home care such\u0000as skilled nursing or rehabilitation facilities were seen significantly lower following uro-oncology nursing education (28.1%\u0000vs. 64.3%, p=0.005).\u0000Conclusion: The standardization of uro-oncology nursing care practices will provide better relief of symptoms related major\u0000uro-oncologic surgeries such as radical cystectomy and increase health related quality of life. It may contribute to declines\u0000of out of home care requirement.
