Among various types of skin cancers, basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) have the highest occurrence. About 2.5 million new cases of BCCs are diagnosed every year in the USA and another 500,000 in Europe and Australia [1,2]. BCCs occur most commonly in middle-aged and older people, but, lately, skin cancers are increasingly affecting younger people, too [3]. Approximately 80% to 90% of the cases occur on the head-and-neck, including 65% on the face, in high-risk anatomical areas such as on or near the nose, eyes, ears or mouth. Although not fatal, BCCs can cause large-scale anatomical destruction, resulting in morbidity, physical disfigurement, loss of function (breathing, hearing, swallowing and vision) and psychological trauma. Quality of life thus becomes a significant issue for these patients. Consequently, Mohs surgery guided by frozen pathology is performed to precisely remove the cancer with minimal damage to the surrounding normal skin [4]. Because Mohs surgery is guided by frozen pathology, the procedure is very effective at completely removing cancer, with five-year cure rates of 97% to 99%. However, the preparation of frozen pathology is laborintensive and time-consuming, which results in the overall Mohs procedure being expensive. As incidence rates of skin cancer continue to increase, the number of physician visits and the number of Mohs surgeries in the USA nearly doubled during the last decade. Currently, an estimated 1.5 million surgeries are performed every year, with treatments costs exceeding $3 billion [5].","PeriodicalId":89157,"journal":{"name":"International journal of molecular imaging","volume":"36 1","pages":"1-2"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77290385","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, its non-selective smoothing obscures the edges of lesions or organs. We compared the performance of a newly developed anisotropic diffusion filter called “Statistical Transfer with Optimizing Noise and Edge Sensing” (STONES) with that of the Gaussian filter for small lesions on PET images. We selected seven PET/computed tomography (CT) image slices of the lungs from three patients with multiple lung metastases. For each slice, the lesion detection rates by two physicians (A and B) were compared for Gaussian- and STONES-filtered PET images. The maximum standardized uptake (SUVmax) values of the detected lesions were also compared for non-, Gaussian-, and STONES-filtered images. Physician A detected 19 lesions in the Gaussian-filtered images and 23 lesions in the STONES-filtered images, while Physician B detected 14 lesions in the Gaussian-filtered images and 19 lesions in the STONES-filtered images. SUVmax for the STONES-filtered images was significantly higher and closer to that of the non-filtered images compared to those for the Gaussian-filtered images. STONES improved the detection rate and increased SUVmax in comparison with Gaussian filter. Thus, it should be more advantageous for the detection of small lesions with PET.","PeriodicalId":89157,"journal":{"name":"International journal of molecular imaging","volume":"76 1","pages":"1-5"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72686426","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Microwave imaging is a promising method in biomedical applications such as breast cancer detection due to its good penetration property, non-ionizing and non-invasive nature which has the potential to be a complementary modality to standard mammography. In this paper, An UWB Microstrip-fed Vivaldi antenna for microwave imaging systems aimed for an early breast cancer detection is developed. \u0000Results: The Vivaldi antenna is designed to operate between 8.821 to 22.30 GHz with dimensions of 44.85 × 25.28 mm that permits good radiation within the frequency range. To achieve UWB performance, Taconic TLC-32 substrate which has relative permittivity of 3.2 has been used to simulate the antenna by using Antenna Magus Software. The simulation results show that the return loss is better than -10dB within the range of 7.143 GHz to 24.60 GHz with the maximum return loss of -37.56 dB at 18.39 GHz. However, due to difficulties in antenna fabrication at higher frequencies, a low frequency of about 2.4 GHz is considered. Antenna measurements presents good radiation pattern that suit medical imaging systems to detect breast tumors. The amount of reflection is also found to be minimum for the antenna design frequency (2.4 GHz) which appears to be -26.34 db.","PeriodicalId":89157,"journal":{"name":"International journal of molecular imaging","volume":"32 1","pages":"1-5"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78557152","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present study reports the application of magnetic resonance imaging instrument to image the binding of ferrioxamine with hemin that allows visualizing the chronic inflammation foci of lung tissue of immunocompromised rats xenografted using small cell lung carcinoma. A low concentration of ferrioxamine (0.05 ± 0.02 μM·kg−1 of rat weight) deposited on tissue outside the vasculature was found to diffuse across the capillary walls to the interstitial space and inflammation foci, which provided a clear enhancement of T1-weighted gradient-echo sequence images. Ferrioxamine imaging allowed the determination of inflammatory sites and their localization in 3D fat-suppressed maximum intensity projections. The smallest dimension of foci that can be clearly determined is about 0.1 mm3. In concomitant to the in vivo imaging, analysis of histological tissue section showed the development of inflammatory sites. This study provides evidence that medical imaging instrument such as MRI scanner allows researchers to correlate images taken with MRI with those using high-resolution microscopy. Moreover, ferrioxamine is a useful molecular probe for determining chronic inflammation particularly at the very early stages of cancer.","PeriodicalId":89157,"journal":{"name":"International journal of molecular imaging","volume":"2016 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1155/2016/8434308","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"64569075","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Inhalation is an alternative route of administration that can potentially increase the efficacy and convenience of treatment. This study was conducted to determine whether delivery to the lungs, initially via the intratracheal (IT) route of administration, would deliver efficacious levels of a recombinant AAT (rAAT) to the site of action in the lungs in mice. 125I-radiolabeled rAAT, fluorophore-conjugated rAAT (rAAT-Alexa488), and NE680 (neutrophil elastase 680, a silent fluorescent substrate of neutrophil elastase which fluoresces in the near-infrared range upon activation by neutrophil elastase) were used to characterize the pharmacokinetics and tissue distribution profile, distribution of rAAT within the lung, and efficacy of rAAT to inhibit neutrophil elastase at the site of action, respectively. The study has demonstrated that rAAT was able to gain access to locations where neutrophil elastase was localized. The histochemical quantification of rAAT activity relative to dose at the site of action provided here will improve confidence in predicting the human dose via the inhalation route.","PeriodicalId":89157,"journal":{"name":"International journal of molecular imaging","volume":"2016 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1155/2016/5768312","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"64438846","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This situation is improved by pairing fluorophores with activator dyes, which enhances fluorescence signals but restricts its application in biomedical studies. To address this issue, we optimized STORM imaging conditions for sparsely-distributing Alexa-647 samples simultaneously illuminated by a 641-nm excitation and a 405-nm reactivation lasers. We found that, compared to a frame frequency of 46 Hz or 85 Hz in STORM imaging, low frequency (20 Hz) resulted in a relatively high background fluorescence but had no obvious effect on specific signals of Alexa-647 in cell-free samples. In fixed human cells, high frequency (85 Hz) was superior in distinguishing sparse Alexa-647 fluorophores from cellular autofluorescence. Furthermore, a small false discovery rate was achieved with the use of moderate but not intensive powers of excitation and reactivation lasers. With the selected rather than original frame frequency and laser intensity, low fluorescence background and high detection efficiency of fluorophores were obtained for cell samples sparsely labeled with a range of Alexa-647 concentrations. Therefore, this study optimized STORM imaging conditions and promoted detection sensitivity and efficiency of single molecules in cells in an activator dye-independent way.","PeriodicalId":89157,"journal":{"name":"International journal of molecular imaging","volume":"67 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88227569","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
