Descriptive comparisons of status aspiration, expectations and attainment were made for 427 white and 268 black males from six Deep South states. Aspirations and expectation levels for future occupational and educational attainment were apparently \"unrealistic\" in terms of available opportunities and also appeared to be marginal related to present attainment. Although white levels of these variables somewhat exceeded comparable levels for blacks, both groups generally were found to have such unrealistic and optimistic attitudes. A hypothesis was offered where unrealistic future orientations are seen as having positive consequences in a success-oriented society for those who are not succeeding by allowing them to not admit failure by projecting future achievements.","PeriodicalId":85554,"journal":{"name":"Sociology of work and occupations","volume":"3 1","pages":"411 - 428"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1976-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1177/009392857634002","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"64916221","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An analysis of a new specialty in city planning—advocate planning—suggests that this model be extended so that social movements are seen to enter a profession through the creation of new specialties or segments. By showing that the new practitioners of advocacy planning were highly, though variably, influenced by social movement organizations of the 1960s, this paper suggests the outlines of conflict and difference within the new segment itself Based on interviews with 112 advocate planners in ten cities, the study finds the new practitioners to be young and of similar background to those composing the activist youth movements of their times in college and graduate schools. The differences among them, in regard to their orientation to politics and professionalism, are also examined in the light of new developments in the analysis of reform movements.","PeriodicalId":85554,"journal":{"name":"Sociology of work and occupations","volume":"71 1","pages":"429 - 454"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1976-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1177/009392857634003","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"64916240","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Consequently, it was hypothesized that adjustment to retirement would be more successfully accomplished by enlisted men than by officers regardless of how well they planned or how long they had been retired. A three-factor analysis of variance for unequal groups was conducted to test the statistical significance of rank, number of years retired, and preretirement planning on retirement adjustment. The effects of all factors and all interactions of factors were found to be nonsignificant with the exception of preretirement planning (p <.001). Those who planned well adjusted well, regardless of rank or number of years retired.","PeriodicalId":85554,"journal":{"name":"Sociology of work and occupations","volume":"3 1","pages":"479 - 487"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1976-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1177/009392857634005","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"64916263","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These three approaches, though superficially plausible, actually give rise to serious misconceptions about the nature of the work of this school, as well as to faulty interpretations of its development and demise. After identifying and criticising these inadequate approaches, this paper proceeds to offer a new account of the work of this group of writers based on a more adequate methodology for assessing ideas. This approach sees ideas as being applied to a developing \"problem context,\" itself changing in response to the process of research. Finally, it is argued that the results of this reassessment have implications not only for our understanding of the work of the human relations school, but also for the practice of industrial sociology today.","PeriodicalId":85554,"journal":{"name":"Sociology of work and occupations","volume":"3 1","pages":"379 - 410"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1976-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1177/009392857634001","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"64916211","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The physician's assistant (P.A.) occupation is an example. The general model of professional development cannot adequately deal with the evolutionary process of the P.A. A content analysis of the literature on the P.A. uncovered three periods in the P.A.'s development: Period I, characterized by the design and selling of an innovative role; Period II, characterized by the planning and establishment of the P.A.; and Period III, characterized by attempts to entrench the P.A. within the medical/paramedical hierarchy.","PeriodicalId":85554,"journal":{"name":"Sociology of work and occupations","volume":"3 1","pages":"455 - 478"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1976-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1177/009392857634004","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"64916249","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At one extreme, bad news must be communicated several times a day, day after day. One such occupation, the deputy U.S. Marshal, is analyzed in terms of tactics employed to manage the stressful moments of preparing to deliver bad news, delivering it, and shoring up recipients after delivery. Yet the potential significance of these views for medical diagnosis and treatment has been argued in recent writings of medical sociologists. This study. examines perceptions of the distribution of mental disorder for a wide range of health workers in Colombia. Results indicate that while marked differences do exist, they are more closely related to differences in respondents' occupational specialization than to personal characteristics. Discussion centers on the implications of these findings for understanding differences in diagnostic and treatment orientations.","PeriodicalId":85554,"journal":{"name":"Sociology of work and occupations","volume":"3 1","pages":"273 - 302"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1976-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1177/003803857600300302","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"65325694","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The pharmacy occupation provides a chance to compare occupational versus organizational effects on reference group identity because of the diversity in role orientations (business and professional) and work settings. Data from a population of pharmacists in a middle sized urban area strongly support the situational model. Reference group identity follows the power structure of the work setting as hospital pharmacists identified with physicians, while neighborhood pharmacists displayed a colleague-identity and chain store pharmacists rejected both occupational groups to identify with clients. Focusing on the power hierarchy of the work setting accounts for the diverse findings of both professional and situational models. Only in settings where the occupation dominates is identity colleague-based. Suggestions for revamping the outdated professional model to take into consideration the changed employment settings are offered.","PeriodicalId":85554,"journal":{"name":"Sociology of work and occupations","volume":"3 1","pages":"303 - 330"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1976-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1177/003803857600300303","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"65325255","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
