Amendment of potato-dextrose agar with 40 micrograms of GE/cm3 inhibited linear growth of tested species at least in 50%. Addition of 40 micrograms of GE/cm3 of medium inhibited spore germination of F. oxysporum f.sp. cyclaminis about 34% whereas germ tube growth was suppressed in 87%. In case of Botrytis species, B. cinerea spores were more susceptible on GE than B. elliptica. They did not germinate, however, at 200 micrograms of GE/cm3. Drenching of peat, artificially infested with F. oxysporum f. sp. dianthi, with GE at conc. 165 micrograms/cm3 resulted in drastical decrease of colony forming unit numbers and this suppressive effect was observed at least 35 days.</p>","PeriodicalId":85134,"journal":{"name":"Mededelingen (Rijksuniversiteit te Gent. This 4992.5 Da protein exhibited a very strong antifungal activity against five different fytopathogenic fungi that were tested. Concentrations required to inhibit the growth of Botrytis cinerea in agar diffusion assays and microtiterplate assays were 5 micrograms/ml and 1 microgram/ml, respectively. {"title":"Toxicity and degradation of benefin in chicken embryos.","authors":"L Várnagy, P Budai, E Molnár, M Susan, T Fáncsi","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>The herbicide formulation Flubalex (20% benefin) was applied, ROSS 308 embryonated hen eggs were treated on day 12 of incubation period. The pesticide was diluted in water to a concentration level of 3.0%, and the emulsion was injected into the air space in a volume of 0.1 ml/egg, or hen's eggs were treated by the immersion technique. Residues of benefin were measured in the samples on days 13, 15 and 19 of the incubation of chicken embryos, and morphological examinations were performed simultaneously. After the immersion treatment the mortality rate of embryos was remarkable compared to the injection treatment. Analytical chemistry data showed the concentration of the active ingredient which was 3.5 times higher on day 13 of incubation in the samples after immersion treatment than after the injection of benefin. This resulted an increased incidence rate of mortality. On day 19 of hatching period the benefin concentration was practically similar independently of treatment method. {"title":"Selection for aluminium tolerance in embryogenic lines of Citrus sinensis L. and C. aurantium L.","authors":"Bao Toan Nguyen, Pierre C Debergh","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>The Citrus cultivars 'Amargo' and 'Pineapple' produce embryogenic cultures on two types of sugars, galactose and lactose. Two percent lactose is optimal for both cultivars; embryogenic callus is produced 8-10 weeks after inoculation. Whereas 2% galactose is optimal for 'Amargo', it is 3% for 'Pineapple'. Three types of embryos are recognized: whitish, greenish and heart shaped. In 8 to 10 week old cultures we do also observe a black spotted type of embryos. A high percentage of plant conversion for both cultivars is observed on a medium containing 30 mg/l of adenine and 2 mg/l of GA3 for 'Amargo'; for 'Pineapple' it is necessary to add BA. We tested two techniques for selection of Al-tolerant lines: one on stagnant liquid medium, and another on shaken liquid medium. The second technique gives a more serious selection pressure; there are almost no surviving calli. In 'Amargo' more calli survived than in 'Pineapple'. Selected calli had to be subcultured nine times to determine their stability. {"title":"Assessment of Helicoverpa Armigera resistance to pyrethroid insecticides in northern Cameroon.","authors":"T Brévault, P Asfom, J Beyo, S Nibouche, M Vaissayre","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>In Central Africa savannas, the noctuid Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) is a major pest of cotton and vegetable crops (including tomato and okra) which directly affects production by attacking fruit-bearing organs. In order to prevent and anticipate problems, the national cotton company (SODECOTON), with the help of the agricultural research (IRAD-PRASAC), implemented in 1999 a monitoring network for the early detection of resistance of target insects to the main recommended insecticides. Over the last three years, from 1999 up to 2001, assessment of H. armigera susceptibility to pyrethroid insecticides was carried out through both vial tests and topical bioassays. Revealed in southern and western Africa, pyrethroid resistance now seems to affect Central Africa also. Although control failure due to resistance has not yet been reported from the field, these results indicate the presence of resistant genes within H. armigera populations in Northern Cameron. Further laboratory studies confirmed the loss of susceptibility to cypermethrin in wild populations. Priority actions to be developed must focus on the rational and concerted management of pesticide use and the implementation of a regional monitoring network for the early detection of the loss of sensibility of target insects to the main recommended insecticides. At the same time, more fundamental research should be undertaken on the epidemiological profile of resistance in order to define practical ways of reducing the selection pressure.</p>","PeriodicalId":85134,"journal":{"name":"Mededelingen (Rijksuniversiteit te Gent. Using the procedure of Ellman, I50 (M) and Ki (M-1 min-1) values were established. The beneficial insects showed the least susceptibility to diazinon and the differences between their measured values were not remarkable. Paraoxon was extremely toxic to the AChE of F. auricularia but Ch. carnea and C. septempunctata were similarly more tolerant to this organophosphate. In the case of malaoxon earwig and green lacewing AChEs were much more sensitive than AChE of the ladybird beetle. Measuring the carbaryl inhibition, F. auricularia was the least tolerant. The susceptibility of ladybird AChE differed highly from that of both species. According to the measured values, the green lacewing was less tolerant than the ladybird beetle but more tolerant compared with the common earwig. Summarizing our biochemical results, the order of susceptibility of beneficial insects to insecticides investigated was the following F. auricularia > Ch. carnea > C. septempunctata.</p>","PeriodicalId":85134,"journal":{"name":"Mededelingen (Rijksuniversiteit te Gent. Studies on diagnosis, incidence and distribution of pathogens associated with parthenium weed in Ethiopia were carried out from 1998-2002. Several fungal isolates were obtained from seed and other parts of parthenium plants. Among them were putative pathogenic fungal species of the genus Helminthosporium, Phoma, Curvularia, Chaetomium, Alternaria, and Fusarium. However, pathogenecity test of the isolates obtained showed no or non-specific symptoms. It was concluded that these pathogens could be opportunistic with insignificant potential for biological control of parthenium. Two most important diseases associated with parthenium were a rust disease, caused by Puccinia abrupta var. partheniicola, and a phyllody disease, caused by a phytoplasma of fababean phyllody (PBP) phytoplasma group. The rust was commonly found in cool mid altitude (1500-2500 m) areas while phyllody was observed in low to mid altitude regions (900-2500 m) of Ethiopia, with a disease incidence up to 100% and 75%, respectively, in some locations. Study of the individual effects of the rust and phyllody diseases under field conditions showed a reduction on weed morphological parameters (plant height, leaf area, and dry matter yield). Parthenium seed production was reduced by 42% and 85% due to rust and phyllody, respectively. Phyllody and rust diseases of parthenium showed significant potential for classical biological control of parthenium after further confirmation of insect vectors that transmit phyllody and host range of phyllody disease to the related economic plants in Ethiopia.</p>","PeriodicalId":85134,"journal":{"name":"Mededelingen (Rijksuniversiteit te Gent. It is a powerful toxicant for controlling lepidopteran larvae resulting in LC-90 values of 0.42 and 0.30 mg a.i./liter for Spodoptera littoralis and S. exigua, respectively. Its residual activity under field conditions ranges between 10 and 30 days depending on environmental conditions. The compound is a powerful toxicant against developing stages of whiteflies, resulting in LC-90 values of 0.68 and 8.56 mg a.i./liter for Bemisia tabaci and Trialeurodes vaporariorum, respectively. It has translaminar activity, enabling the control of the leaf miner Liriomyza huidobrensis at concentrations ranging between 5 and 45 mg a.i./liter. Novaluron has no cross-resistance with other leading compounds for controlling whiteflies such as buprofezin and pyriproxyfen. It is a rain fast compound suitable in the tropics and in rainy seasons. It has no appreciable effect on parasitoids and phytoseiids and a mild effect on other natural enemies and may be considered a potential component in IPM programs. The spore wall structure forms the most feasible and convenient method for differentiation between the two pathogens. Accordingly, T. foetidae is the most prevalent pathogen in North Syria and the predominant pathogen in the bread wheat. T. caries was widespread in durum wheat in South Syria. This phenomenon has been confirmed in artificial inoculation tests and discussed as host-preference in T. foetidae and T. caries irrespective of the geographical area in which the disease is observed and irrespective of the environmental conditions.
