To be in accordance with quality standards, especially in terms of agrochemical residues (R.M.L.), biological pest control was developed and reduces the insecticide use, leading to have safer fresh products. Carrot represents an important cultivated species in Wallonia. To asses the impact of close habitat on both pest (mainly aphids) and beneficial insects, carrot fields were investigated during all the production duration in 2000. Twelve fields between Waremme and Hannut were visited weekly from June to October. Insects were caught using yellow traps and determined to the family level. Approximately 90,000 insects belonging to 109 families were identified. Significant differences linked to field closed habitat were observed on 31 families. An increase of biodiversity in term of family number near set-asides and woody borders was observed. Evaluation of pest and beneficial diversity and density in vegetable crops was discussed to promote future IPM program.</p>","PeriodicalId":85134,"journal":{"name":"Mededelingen (Rijksuniversiteit te Gent. These strains were used to investigate their biocontrol traits in vitro and their ability to suppress the soybean damping-off in vivo (soil and seed treatments). Three highly effective isolates were selected from these antagonists for subsequent studies. According to the biochemical, physiological and morphological tests, these isolates (B-2, B-12 and B-80) were identified as Bacillus spp. In soil treatment, the isolate B-3 with 70.8%, B-12 with 66.7%, B-80 with 54.2% had the highest effect on reducing the soybean damping-off. In seed treatment, the isolates B-43 with 62.5%, B-12 with 58.4 and B-80 with 45.8%, had the greatest effect on reducing the disease. The dissipation of iodosulfuron in soil followed a first order kinetics. After the application of iodosulfuron at Melle at the beginning of April 2000, the soil half-life of iodosulfuron in the 0-10 cm surface soil layer was 60 days. At the end of September 2000, i.e. one month after the winter wheat harvest, only 8% of the applied dose of iodosulfuron remained in soil as iodosulfuron itself. At the mid of November, iodosulfuron 1 was no more detected in the 0-10 cm surface soil layer. From the beginning of May till the end of July 2000, low concentrations of iodosulfonamide 2 and of iodosaccharin 3 were observed in the 0-10 cm surface soil layer, their maximum concentrations being 0.7 and 1.5 micrograms of equivalents of iodosulfuron 1 kg-1 dry soil, respectively. At the end of September, the metabolites 2 and 3 were no more detected in soil. At Leke, Gistel and Zevekote, iodosulfuron was applied at the beginning of May 2001, and its half-life in the 0-10 cm surface soil layer was 44, 30 and 35 days, respectively. The later application of iodosulfuron and the higher soil pH (about 8) at Leke, Gistel and Zevekote should explain the soil half-lives lower than at Melle (soil pH 6.2). Starch gel electrophoresis was used to analyse extracts from fresh young leaves collected from trees located in the provinces of Can Tho and Vinh Long. Isozymic analysis revealed that all cultivars are isozymically heterogeneous, and composed of two or more clones. A total of 26 clones were discriminated from eight cultivars. Unique combinations of isozymic variants of the five enzymes assayed identified 18 (69%) of the 26 clones. The remaining eight clones could be separated into four additional groups. Most obvious symptoms of the disease are described. Long pale or yellow stripes become darker as the fungus sporulates on the leaf surface. Infected plants usually are stunted and produce sterile spikes, rarely a few seeds are produced. Infected spikes and late-forming tillers may produce fertile spikes. The fungus is seed brone and survives in the outer layers of infected seed. To study the seed-borne disease, we have used the different methods (ISTA). Coleoptiles of seedlings are infected by the fungus under cool, moist conditions, a soil temperature below 15 degrees C is necessary for seed infection. The fungus penetrates through coleoptiles and grows systemically within the plant, produces toxin and kills cells and discolors leaf tissue between veins, thus causing striped lesions. When conditions are wet or humid, spores are produced on the surface of leaves at above the time spikes of healthy plant. Morphological characteristics of the vegetative and reproductive structures of the fungus show that it is Drechslera graminea (Rabenh) Shoemaker.</p>","PeriodicalId":85134,"journal":{"name":"Mededelingen (Rijksuniversiteit te Gent. On the other hand, in vivo, isolates resistant to M and O were 29.0% and 32.7%, respectively, among 217 isolates from potato plants in Weichang and Chongli, Hebei, only one isolate resistant to M and O was found among 88 isolates from tomato plants in Xushui, Hebei. Among 73 isolates from potato in Weichang and Chongli, 6 isolates with A2 mating type were 8.2%, 3 A2 isolates resistant to metalaxyl and oxadixyl. 3 A2 isolates were 6.8% of 44 isolates from tomato in Xushui. Cross resistance in Phytophthora infestans was confirmed between M and O, but no cross resistance between C or D and M or O. The field isolates resistant to M and O were outstandingly fitter than sensitive or intermediate ones, mainly due to stronger sporulation capacity of the field isolates.</p>","PeriodicalId":85134,"journal":{"name":"Mededelingen (Rijksuniversiteit te Gent. Data were analysed by mean of the decision support system \"Proculture\" which links an automatic weather station of the PAMESEB network to a particular field, simulates plant development with adjustment by one phenological observation during the stem elongation and analyses superposition of emerged leaves and infection events (http://www.fymy.ucl.ac.be/proculture). Several climatic events favourable for the infection and dissemination of M. graminicola occurred between October 2000 and March 2001 and allowed build up of a large amount of inoculum on the lower leaves at the end of the winter. The start of stem elongation was associated with frequent rainy periods during April, causing early infection of F5, F4 and up to F3 in some precocious fields. Dry weather with only a few local showers during most of May and June slowed down spread of infection to the upper leaves, leading to absence of M. graminicola infection of the flag leaf in 9 out of the 11 fields. Yield increase by a single fungicide spray ranged from 800 to 2200 kg/ha. A second treatment was cost effective in none of the fields. The interest and limitation of the decision support system for understanding M. graminicola epidemic and for guiding decision on spray timing are discussed.</p>","PeriodicalId":85134,"journal":{"name":"Mededelingen (Rijksuniversiteit te Gent.
