{"title":"Recovery of non-target plants affected by airborne herbicides.","authors":"S Follak, K Hurle","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

This study was conducted to determine the effects of airborne herbicides on the photosynthesis of non-target plants and to interpret and evaluate the observed effects airborne herbicides have on non-target plants. The study involved the exposition of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) at different growth stages for 24 h in a wind tunnel to a range of various concentrations (0.012 to 4.104 micrograms/m3) of the herbicide bromoxynil, an inhibitor of photosynthesis. By means of chlorophyll fluorescence induction analysis, the quantum yield of electron transport at photosystem II was calculated as phi PSII = (Fm'-Ft)/Fm'. In order to evaluate the ecological significance of the observed effects, the ability of the plants to recover was investigated. Results show, that their is a risk for sunflower plants of being affected by airborne herbicides; bromoxynil concentrations in ambient air > 0.265 microgram/m3 impair the photosynthetic activity of exposed leaves and accordingly > 0.611 microgram/m3 the photosynthetic activity of newly developed leaves. Compared to monitoring data of bromoxynil in the atmosphere, it can be concluded, that plants remote from agricultural fields may be not affected, whereas plants growing near treated fields are potentially at risk. However, it has to be taken into account that plants are able to recover from injury up to a certain concentration and exposure time. The ability to recover has been found to be related to the growth stage and the development stage of the leaf. Although younger plants are more sensitive than older plants, they can compensate a decrease in the photosynthetic activity better than older plants. Thus, the ability to recover has to be considered, when estimating the ecotoxicological potential of airborne herbicides on non-target plants and consideration should be given to implement this information into a non-target-risk assessment.
","PeriodicalId":85134,"journal":{"name":"Mededelingen (Rijksuniversiteit te Gent. {"title":"The effect of crop protection strategy on pest and beneficials incidence in protected crops.","authors":"I Lourenço, S Rodrigues, E Figueiredo, M C Godinho, C Marques, F Amaro, A Mexia","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

This study took place in the Oeste region from 1996-1999 and it intended to analyse if the crop protection strategy followed by the farmer influenced the arthropod incidence and the natural control in protected vegetable crops under Mediterranean conditions. The observations were made fortnightly (Autumn/Winter) or weekly (Spring/Summer) in 30-60 plants/parcel (1 plant/35 m2) in order to evaluate incidences. Samples of pests and natural enemies were collected for systematic identification in two greenhouses for each protection strategy (traditional chemical control (TCC), integrated pest management (IPM) and pest control allowed in organic farming (OF)) in lettuce, tomato, green beans and cucumber. Data on incidence of mites, aphids, caterpillars, leafminers, whiteflies, thrips and respective natural enemies were registered as well as phytosanitary treatments performed (farmers' information and/or in loco traces). The leafminers were the pest whose incidence more often presented significant statistical differences between the studied protection strategies. In relation to this pest, the main results obtained were: a higher feeding punctures incidence in TCC than in IPM; higher incidence of adults, mines and feeding punctures in TCC than in OF; and a higher mines' incidence in IPM than in OF. Both in TCC and IPM high percentages of plants with mines were found although without an adult proportional presence. In the first case this was due to the repeatedly phytosanitary treatments applied; in the second case it was due to the natural control, since in IPM and OF greenhouses the collected larvae were mostly parasitized or dead. In spite of the fact these two strategies have as final result a similar mines and adults incidence, their production and environmental costs are quite different. Significant differences at the beneficials' population level between TCC greenhouses and IPM or OF greenhouses were found. As the farmers did no biological treatments these differences are related to different levels of beneficial populations due to different secondary effects of the pesticides applied.
","PeriodicalId":85134,"journal":{"name":"Mededelingen (Rijksuniversiteit te Gent. {"title":"The influence of fungicides on the growth of Trichoderma asperellum.","authors":"B De Schutter, R Aerts, L Rombouts","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Numbers of strains of Trichoderma asperellum are known as biological control agents of certain root pathogens of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum). The restricted use of fungicides is sometimes useful in combination with these biological control agents. Therefore some experiments were conducted to evaluate the growth of T. asperellum in the presence of fungicides as Previcur (active substance propamocarb) and Sumico (with the active substance carbendazim and diethofencarb). The influence of these fungicides was first examined in laboratory conditions. The fungus was brought on a potato dextrose agar where the fungicides Previcur, Sumico and carbendazim were added in a concentration of 0.1x, 1x and 10x the recommended dose. The growth of T. asperellum was totally inhibited by the three Sumico and carbendazim concentrations. T. asperellum knew a small but significant decrease of growth when the 10x dose of Previcur was added. Afterwards the influence of these fungicides on the fungus was tested in field conditions in the greenhouse. The fungus was applied to the roots of the tomato plant, which was grown on a rockwool medium. Previcur and Sumico were submitted to the plants using the normal procedure. The results of the tests showed that in field conditions there was no effect of the fungicide treatment on the presence of the fungus, although the laboratory tests showed the opposite for Sumico. To explain this contradiction two other experiments were conducted to follow the migration of the Sumico after treatment. A residue analysis showed that the highest concentration of Sumico was detected in the rockwool medium, and some residues were found in the drain water and the stems. Even with a 100x recommended dose of Sumico the fungus was still present the day after the treatment.
","PeriodicalId":85134,"journal":{"name":"Mededelingen (Rijksuniversiteit te Gent. To study the plant/root-knot nematode interaction, a screening was performed for mutants of Arabidopsis thaliana that were less susceptible to nematode infection. Ethyl methanesulfonate-mutagenized A. thaliana M2 seeds (13,000) were germinated and the seedlings were screened in vitro for nematode susceptibility. Another 5,000 plants were screened in a sand mixture under glasshouse conditions. Ten mutants that were at least a 2-fold less susceptible than the wild-type were retained and analyzed in more detail in vitro as well as in the greenhouse. {"title":"Effect of diatomaceous earths Fossil Shield and Silico-Sec on the egg laying behaviour of Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) (Coleoptera: Bruchidae).","authors":"B D Rohitha Prasantha, Ch Reichmuth, C Büttner","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

The pulse beetle, Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) is a destructive pest of pulses in both storage and field. It is well known that diatomaceous earth (DE) kill the insects by locally absorbing the epicuticular lipid layers leading to high rate of water loss through the cuticle. However, the effectiveness of DE depends on its ability to kill the adults before copulation and egg-laying. Newly emerged virgin males and females of Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) were exposed to the DEs, Fossil-Shield and Silico-Sec on 30 treated mungbeans (Vigna radita (L)). Fecundity, number of beans used for egg-laying and beans without eggs were evaluated after four days; the number of unhatched eggs was evaluated after ten days. It was determined, that the fecundity of female insects decreased sigmoidely with increasing rate of DE content. Percentages of unhatched eggs and seeds without eggs increased with increasing DE dosages. However, the maximum egg densities (eggs per used secd) occurred at 1200 mg DE/kg for Fossil-Shield and Silico-Sec. The reason for such DE-stimulated behaviour of egg laying expressed as a number of seeds with eggs of C. maculatus is not known, but it may be related to the stress caused by the inert dusts or to the reduction of both chemical and physical (tactile) stimuli. Treatment with DEs altered the surface texture of the beans and caused less cohesion between eggs and the seed surface. Only few larvae managed to penetrate into the grains, possibly due to increased grain roughness and repellent effect of DE. A relatively high number of eggs were laid on the surface of those beans where the amount of dust had been locally reduced by adults' movement and their pick up of DE. Therefore, several larvae tried to penetrate into these treated beans, causing a high larval density per partially cleaned bean. All these reasons lead to a progeny decline.
","PeriodicalId":85134,"journal":{"name":"Mededelingen (Rijksuniversiteit te Gent.
