Applying conservation of resources theory, we propose and test a model that determines why and when empowering leadership benefits actors. We use an experience sampling survey to examine the effect of empowering leadership on actors’ daily work engagement. In particular, we focus on the moderating role of power distance orientation and the mediating roles of negative affect and sleep quality, which operate sequentially. The results based on responses from 160 supervisors in two Chinese organizations indicated that empowering leadership in the morning was negatively related to negative affect in the afternoon and positively related to sleep quality at night and next-day work engagement. The strength of this beneficial effect was moderated by power distance orientation, such that supervisors with a high degree of power distance orientation obtained fewer benefits from empowering leadership than those with a low degree of power distance orientation. The theoretical and practical implications of these findings for the leadership, affect, sleep, power distance, and conservation of resources literatures are discussed.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":8474,"journal":{"name":"Asia Pacific Journal of Management","volume":"42 2","pages":"689 - 714"},"PeriodicalIF":5.8,"publicationDate":"2024-02-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s10490-024-09947-3.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139861950","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the interactions between environmental factors and EA are understudied and it is unclear how alertness influences and is shaped by entrepreneurs’ local ecosystems. In this “perspectives” essay, we contend that EA and entrepreneurial ecosystems research could be enriched by greater cross-fertilization. We respond to calls for more focus on the microfoundations of entrepreneurship by exploring the opportunities in research at the interface of EA and entrepreneurial ecosystems. We develop a multi-level framework to explain how EA is not only influenced by entrepreneurial ecosystems but can collectively influence the system-level functioning and leadership of ecosystems. Our framework clarifies how EA is shaped by the social, cultural, and material attributes of ecosystems and, in turn, how EA influences ecosystem attributes (diversity and coherence) and outcomes (resilience and coordination). We explain why it is critical to treat the environment as more than simply a moderating influence on the effects of EA and why it is fruitful for entrepreneurship research to develop a fuller picture of EA’s contextual determinants and outcomes. We conclude by proposing a research agenda that explores the interplay between EA and entrepreneurial ecosystems.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":8474,"journal":{"name":"Asia Pacific Journal of Management","volume":"42 1","pages":"57 - 75"},"PeriodicalIF":4.9,"publicationDate":"2024-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s10490-024-09951-7.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139680083","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We find that the military experience of a CEO is negatively related to the risk taking of a firm before a shock. Furthermore, we find that these pre-shock features promote organizational resilience to shocks, as firms led by CEOs with military experience are more robust and less vulnerable to shocks and can recover from shocks rapidly. This effect is partially mediated by the pre-shock risk taking of firms. By regarding EPU as an individualised perception rather than the homogeneous and macro factor in previous studies, we theorise that an increase in EPU perception will trigger a threat-rigidity effect and drive the firm to avoid participating in GTI activities featured by technological and environmental externalities. Furthermore, we find that environmental governance performance and state ownership can mitigate the threat-rigidity effect of EPU perception on GTI. Using a sample of Chinese listed manufacturing firms during 2011–2021, this study measures firms’ EPU perceptions at the micro level based on textual analysis of Management Discussion and Analysis texts, and draws evidence in support of the arguments. These findings provide significant insights for executives and government agencies to govern firms’ GTI when perceiving a turbulent economic policy environment.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":8474,"journal":{"name":"Asia Pacific Journal of Management","volume":"42 3","pages":"1163 - 1195"},"PeriodicalIF":5.8,"publicationDate":"2024-01-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139526836","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As such, entrepreneurial alertness and cultural intelligence stand out as essential catalysts for innovation and creativity. Managers' ability to identify opportunities, navigate diverse cultural contexts, and unleash their creative potential is now recognized as a critical factor for business success. However, previous research has primarily examined the independent influence of entrepreneurial alertness and cultural intelligence on other entrepreneurial outcomes, leaving a significant gap in understanding their independent and combined impact on creative self-efficacy (CSE). In this study, we bridge this gap by investigating the interplay between entrepreneurial alertness, cultural intelligence, and CSE among managers. Drawing on schema theory and entrepreneurial alertness literature, we hypothesize that entrepreneurial alertness enhances CSE, with cultural intelligence moderating this relationship. Our three studies, involving student and non-student samples, provide empirical evidence to generally support these hypotheses. Our study contributes to the existing literature by integrating concepts from entrepreneurship, psychology, and cross-cultural management, enriching our understanding of how these constructs influence CSE. The findings also shed light on the teachability of entrepreneurial alertness and its role in fostering CSE, thus aiding in better preparing future entrepreneurs for the complexities of the global marketplace.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":8474,"journal":{"name":"Asia Pacific Journal of Management","volume":"42 1","pages":"77 - 108"},"PeriodicalIF":4.9,"publicationDate":"2023-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138628866","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

State ownership and firm status (in terms of age, size, and human capital) are all found to be useful predictors of this non-conformity. Building on institutional theory and resource dependence theory in an emerging market context, this study proposes that non-conformity would be high for state owned enterprises (SOEs) and for both low- and high-status firms, based on their evaluations of the legitimacy of credit rating and the relative power balance between the government and themselves. In contrast, middle-status firms would be less likely to show non-conformity behaviors. Moreover, the influence of state ownership and firm status on non-conformity would be further moderated by the degree of government intervention. The results from an empirical study of 2,708 manufacturing firms in China largely support these hypotheses.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":8474,"journal":{"name":"Asia Pacific Journal of Management","volume":"42 3","pages":"1645 - 1681"},"PeriodicalIF":5.8,"publicationDate":"2023-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138591810","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition, we identify patient’s identification with medical staff as a key first-stage moderator in shaping the mediation process. Based on survey data from 213 medical staff on 37 medical teams at two hospitals in China, our findings revealed that team–medical staff incongruence in patient orientation led to high emotional exhaustion of medical staffs. Further, when the patient orientation of the medical staffs was higher than that of the team, medical staffs perceived higher emotional exhaustion, and the effect of the team–medical staff incongruence in patient orientation on medical service quality was mediated by the emotional exhaustion of medical staffs. Finally, our results found that patient’s identification with medical staff moderates the indirectly relationship between team–medical staff incongruence in patient orientation and medical service quality via emotional exhaustion.
