This article underscores the importance of leveraging the unique contextual features of the Asia-Pacific region to enrich and refine management theories. Traditional management theories, often rooted in Western contexts, may not fully capture the complexities of the Asia-Pacific region’s diverse and dynamic environment. The article highlights the need for context-specific research that considers the region’s economic, institutional, and cultural diversity. It calls for a deeper exploration of under-researched areas of management. By contextualizing existing theories and developing new ones grounded in the Asia-Pacific context, the Asia Pacific Journal of Management aims to provide valuable insights for both scholars and practitioners. The editorial also outlines the journal’s vision to promote diverse perspectives, encourage submissions from underrepresented contexts, and celebrate contributions that significantly advance the understanding of management in the Asia-Pacific region.

","PeriodicalId":8474,"journal":{"name":"Asia Pacific Journal of Management","volume":"42 1","pages":"1 - 7"},"PeriodicalIF":4.9,"publicationDate":"2025-03-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144091161","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We address three crucial questions: (1) What do we know from Luo’s three decades of research? (2) How can he achieve sustained high-impact research? (3) What lessons can we learn from his scholarship? Deploying artificial intelligence (AI) to help make sense of Luo’s prolific and influential research, we find that his scholarship excels in both quantity and quality, expanding the boundaries in international business (IB) and international management (IM) research through his conceptual and empirical exploration of a broad range of topics. A trailblazing scholar bridging East and West, Luo has been a pioneer in reframing traditional West-based IB/IM concepts in East-based contexts centered on emerging markets. Asserting influence beyond his own field, he has successfully exported some IB/IM research to other disciplines. Critical lessons from his scholarship include: (1) Passion, dedication, and focus are a must. (2) Attention to reality and continuous learning drive success. (3) Open perspectives allow for better engagement with new phenomena.

","PeriodicalId":8474,"journal":{"name":"Asia Pacific Journal of Management","volume":"42 1","pages":"19 - 29"},"PeriodicalIF":4.9,"publicationDate":"2025-03-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144091118","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We also introduce the seven new papers included in this special issue of Asia Pacific Journal of Management on entrepreneurial alertness. To address this gap, we introduce event system theory (EST) into these fields, offering a critical lens to analyze the complexity of disruptive events. EST provides a comprehensive framework to explore how events unfold and impact firms across various dimensions, moving beyond traditional place-centric views that focus primarily on geographic proximity. A key contribution of this perspective paper is the development of the event space perspective, a novel extension of EST that captures the relational, symbolic, and sociopolitical channels through which disruptive events influence organizations. This new perspective encourages a more dynamic and nuanced understanding of how events shape firm strategy and performance. Finally, we draw on both EST and the event space perspective to offer promising research directions on disruptive events for strategy and international business, laying a foundation for future studies to explore organizational resilience, strategic adaptation, and the management of uncertainty in an increasingly volatile global environment.

","PeriodicalId":8474,"journal":{"name":"Asia Pacific Journal of Management","volume":"41 4","pages":"1797 - 1818"},"PeriodicalIF":4.9,"publicationDate":"2024-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142826402","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To do so, we conduct a systematic literature review using a bibliometric analysis of the Asia Pacific Journal of Management (APJM), the leading journal for management and organizational research in Asia Pacific that is celebrating its 40th anniversary. A total of 915 articles published by APJM from 2001 to 2024 were retrieved from the Scopus database and subsequently subjected to a performance analysis of productivity (publications) and impact (citations) alongside a science mapping of knowledge (themes). This study reveals a steady increase in APJM publications and citations, underscoring the journal’s growing influence. Major themes include cultural understanding and interpersonal networks, as well as the adaptability of organizations in emerging economies. Areas such as innovation, performance, and corporate governance highlight the importance of growth, competitiveness, and responsible management structures, while research on major Asian markets like China, India, and Thailand underscores the relevance of globalization and multinational strategies. Specifically, it examines the mediating role of entrepreneurial alertness and the moderating role of the societal values of benevolence and egalitarianism, across several countries. We tested the model using a larger dataset of 457,407 country-year matched samples based on Propensity Score Matching (PSM) to alleviate endogeneity and selection bias from 38 countries/regions spanning 2015–2019. Results reveal that individuals with voluntary sector experience are more alert to recognizing entrepreneurial opportunities, and this relationship is amplified in societies with strong benevolence and egalitarian values. We conducted in-depth interviews with business leaders from various industries in Thailand through an emic approach to focus on how local cultural meaning system shapes the psychological processes underlying bribery conducts. We identified indicators of perceived bribery pervasiveness such as implicit forms of bribery and the temporal dimension of cultural transmission, indicating persistence of bribery pervasiveness. Moreover, contrary to conventional wisdom, we found that lay beliefs in Buddhist teachings reduce moral awareness and moral judgments of bribery while providing opportunities to wash away bad karma for engagement in bribery. These behavioral strategies and psychological coping mechanisms lead to a self-sustaining system for continuously engaging in bribery.
