This genus is a source of many phytoconstituents, with alkaloids and flavonoids as the main bioactive components. Erythrina alkaloids are characterized by a unique nucleus. One hundred ninety-eight alkaloids were isolated from Erythrina plants till early 2023. Recently, an increase in the number of isolated dimeric alkaloids has been witnessed. Erythrina plants have been used in the management of different conditions such as oxidative stress and diseases like cancer, inflammation, viral diseases, malaria, and diabetes, with the alkaloids showing a good potential against certain neurological disorders like anxiety, epilepsy, and Alzheimer’s disease. All data on Erythrina alkaloids were collected from Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, SCOPUS, and SciFinder. For compounds isolated from multiple Erythrina species, the plant source was traced only from 2008 till 2023. The reported anxiolytic, anti-convulsant, and anti-Alzheimer’s activities of Erythrina plant metabolites were traced from 2002 till 2023.","PeriodicalId":8314,"journal":{"name":"Archives of Pharmaceutical Sciences Ain Shams University","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76392903","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The hydrodistilled essential oil of Becium grandiflorum (Lam.) Pic. Serm. aerial part was analyzed using GC/MS. A total of 32 compounds amounting to 99.68% of the essential oil were identified. Oxygenated diterpenes constituted the largest share (43.45%) in the studied oil followed by sesquiterpenes hydrocarbons (34.24%). Pimara-7,15-dien-3-ol (20.58%), 3- α -hydroxymanool (14.07%), caryophyllene (8.17%), sandaracopimaradiene (7.98%), Selina-3,7 (11)-diene (5.61%), and germacrene D (4.95%) are the chief identified compounds in B. grandiflorum essential oil. The essential oil was assessed for its antiviral potential against herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) at a non-cytotoxic concentration using a cytopathic effect (CPE) inhibition assay on the Vero cell line. B. grandiflorum essential oil exhibited a pronounced in vitro cytotoxicity against Vero cells with 50 % cytotoxic concentration (CC 50 ) of 7.75 ± 0.84 µg/mL and weak anti-HSV-1 potency with percent inhibition of 21.36 ± 2.13 at a maximum non-toxic concentration of 1 µg/mL.","PeriodicalId":8314,"journal":{"name":"Archives of Pharmaceutical Sciences Ain Shams University","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85795474","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the key properties of cinnamon that has gained significant attention in recent years is its antioxidant activity. Numerous well-known cinnamon species have been assessed for their antioxidant properties and have exhibited surprisingly positive results, which have prompted further investigation into the potential antioxidant effects of the species under study that have yet to be studied. Cinnamon is classified as a nutraceutical which is a desirable characteristic in the studied plant. In the current study, the essential oil of the leaf of Cinnamomum glanduliferum (Wall.) Nees (Lauraceae) was isolated using the Clevenger apparatus and was subjected to GC/MS analysis, enabling the chemical profiling of its constituents. Results revealed that cineole, sabinene, and α -terpineol were identified as the prominent compounds in the oil. Our study aimed at examining the antioxidant activity of Cinnamomum glanduliferum through the utilization of three widely recognized antioxidant assays: DPPH assay by comparing IC 50 values of oil with trolox as a standard, FRAP assay by comparing ferrous equivalents of oil with that of ascorbic acid, and ORAC assay by comparing IC 50 values of oil with quercetin. The results suggest that it may be a promising candidate for further investigation as a potential therapeutic or preventative agent against oxidative stress-related diseases and disorders.","PeriodicalId":8314,"journal":{"name":"Archives of Pharmaceutical Sciences Ain Shams University","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83985859","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has been classified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a member of the most dangerous ESKAPE organisms “ Enterococcus faecium , Staphylococcus aureus , Klebsiella pneumoniae, A. baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter cloacae ” which show high resistance rates toward antibacterial agents. A. baumannii causes life-threatening infections with limited treatment options that include pneumonia, bacteremia, meningitis, urinary tract infection, and wound infection, and numerous reports have documented A. baumannii infection after SARS-CoV-2 infections in multiple publications through the COVID-19 catastrophe. Many virulence factors such as efflux pumps, outer membrane proteins (OMPs), phospholipase, lipopolysaccharide, capsule, protein secretion systems, nutrient-acquisition systems, biofilm production, and quorum sensing account for the pathological and lethal effects of A. baumannii . The present review concentrates on highlighting the major mechanisms of antibiotic resistance declared in A. baumannii , the virulence factors of A. baumannii, and the novel therapeutic strategies. These strategies include novel antibiotics, drug repurposing, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), nanoparticles, bacteriophage therapy, monoclonal antibodies of humans (Hu-mAbs), and gene amendment in an attempt to help the scientific research society.","PeriodicalId":8314,"journal":{"name":"Archives of Pharmaceutical Sciences Ain Shams University","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88894073","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
