The aim of the training was to enhance the participants' awareness of the cognitive processes that they used in a given situation, and to strengthen reflective processes. Cadets were assigned to a training group or to a control group. In-flight performance, stress-management mode, anxiety, and mood were measured. A significant pre- to posttraining improvement in in-flight performance was observed for the lowest ranked cadets in the training group. Anxiety and mood scores did not differ significantly between the training and control groups. However, trained cadets reported changing their stress-management mode. On the whole, these results indicate that cognitive-adaptation training of the type used in this study can enhance both cognitive and emotional adaptation skills.","PeriodicalId":83071,"journal":{"name":"The International journal of aviation psychology","volume":"22 1","pages":"203 - 223"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/10508414.2012.689208","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59694463","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To expand this line of research, this study examined how disorientation affects aviators' cognition while actively piloting a flight simulator. Thirty-six UH-60 aviators participated in the study, and were asked to perform cognitive tests (presented aurally) as they flew oriented and disoriented flight profiles. Test accuracy was significantly worse for the disoriented condition than the two oriented conditions for both cognitive tests.","PeriodicalId":83071,"journal":{"name":"The International journal of aviation psychology","volume":"22 1","pages":"224 - 241"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/10508414.2012.689211","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59694510","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its influence on controller performance, workload, and situation awareness was evaluated in a real-time simulation and in an operational trial. The findings indicate that this additional system support is necessary to achieve higher accuracy without increasing the controllers; workload. At the same time, controllers must stay in the loop to maintain situation awareness. This must be kept in mind while designing decision support systems such as SARA.","PeriodicalId":83071,"journal":{"name":"The International journal of aviation psychology","volume":"25 1","pages":"120 - 143"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/10508414.2012.663241","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59694649","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An SBT intervention instructed pilots in the knowledge and skills necessary for parachute use. The control condition training was a combination of lecture and computer-based training. After training, participants performed emergency scenarios in a flight training device. A multivariate analysis of variance revealed that participants in the SBT performed significantly better than did participants in the control condition on several performance measures. Although additional research is needed, these results likely indicate that SBT is an effective method for training emergency parachute use.","PeriodicalId":83071,"journal":{"name":"The International journal of aviation psychology","volume":"22 1","pages":"184 - 202"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/10508414.2012.663253","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59694409","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two scales reflecting internality or externality were created based on a priori assignment of items. Items were also subjected to principal components analysis, and 6 empirical scales were identified from that analysis. Correlations were computed between the 2 a priori scales, the 6 empirical scales identified by the principal components analysis, involvement in hazardous events, and recent and total career accident involvement. Several of the LOC measures correlated significantly with recent accident involvement. However, only 1 measure was correlated with career accident involvement. Applications of the results in the development of safety training interventions and the evaluation of training programs are discussed.","PeriodicalId":83071,"journal":{"name":"The International journal of aviation psychology","volume":"22 1","pages":"144 - 163"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/10508414.2012.663244","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59694723","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Three moderator variables were investigated: experiment design, task type, and subjects' experience. Due to the large heterogeneity of the included experiments, we used a random-effects model. Correction for measurement error was applied. The results revealed an overall transfer effect in favor of motion (d = 0.51). Effects were weaker in true transfer (d = 0.10) than in quasi-transfer with different (d = 0.73) and identical (d = 1.19) motion, stronger for helicopter (d = 0.86) and disturbance tasks (d = 0.84) than for maneuvering fixed-wing aircraft (d = 0.07), and stronger for subjects without flight experience (d = 1.57) than for pilots with intermediate (d = 0.53) and expert (d = −0.01) experience. In conclusion, motion seems important for flight-naive individuals learning tasks with external disturbances or control of vehicles with low dynamic stability, but not for experts learning fixed-wing aircraft maneuvering tasks. Effects are attenuated in true transfer as compared to quasi-transfer.","PeriodicalId":83071,"journal":{"name":"The International journal of aviation psychology","volume":"22 1","pages":"164 - 183"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/10508414.2012.663247","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59694771","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on a survey with a sample of 182 Korean Air pilots, the results show that a perceived leader's trust in a subordinate is positively related to the subordinate's trust in that leader, and that a subordinate's trust in his or her leader mediates the relationship between the leader's trust in subordinate and the subordinate's trust in the organization. The refresher-training exercises of 21 teams of en route controllers were observed and a number of real incidents were analyzed at a major European Area Control Centre. Expert controllers were observed handling 53 simulated emergencies and abnormal situations during their annual refresher training and their companion team resource management course. The training curriculum was found to be technically oriented. Responding to emergencies was practiced in scenarios less representative of real situations where the controllers do their job in the context of many interruptions, flight crew deviations, and unrecovered errors. Results indicated a substantial gap between formal training requirements and operational demands. An advanced safety training course is proposed on the basis of cognitive task analysis to increase the cognitive fidelity of simulations and focus on cultivating taskwork and teamwork skills.","PeriodicalId":83071,"journal":{"name":"The International journal of aviation psychology","volume":"22 1","pages":"59 - 77"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/10508414.2012.635127","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59694128","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
