Meditation training, which has previously been found to help individuals manage stress, may be an ideal low-cost stress management technique for teachers. A pilot study was run to test the effectiveness of meditation training for student teachers. Subjects were recruited from a university teaching credential program and assigned to either a meditation training or control group. Subjects in the meditation training were taught the RISE response, which includes a simple meditation technique using sound as a focusing device and three corollary techniques. The program prescribed a formal meditation practice period while the three corollary practices were to be used at any time to remind subjects to focus attention. Subjects assigned to the meditation group attended four 45-minute meditation training sessions. The meditation group subjects were found to significantly reduce their stress symptoms in the post-test measurements when compared to the control group in the domains of emotional manifestations, gastronomic distress and behavioral manifestations. The results based on structural equations modeling (LISREL) provided support for the hypothesis that adolescent girls experienced greater levels of subjective distress than adolescent boys. The higher level of subjective distress in adolescent girls is partially accounted for by the greater likelihood of girls experiencing fluctuation in self-images, being sensitive to peer reaction and using more avoidance defense mechanisms. Parental restriction reported at an earlier point in time does not directly affect subsequent subjective distress independent of the other mediating factors.","PeriodicalId":82818,"journal":{"name":"Stress medicine","volume":"24 6","pages":"41-51"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"50681907","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Levels and symptoms of psychological distress were assessed using the 24-item self-administered scale of the Talbieh Brief Distress Inventory (TBDI) in a representative community sample of 1953 adult Russian-born Jewish immigrants to Israel. Univariate and multivariate analyses were conducted to assess the effects of sociodemographic variables on gender differences in psychological distress and symptomatology. Substantial gender differences were found in the overall level of psychological distress, with greater distress reported by females than by males. The phenomenon of gender difference depended largely on age, with greater differences found in middle-aged immigrants. Expression of most symptoms (except paranoid ideation) was greater among females than males, but these differences disappeared differentially with age for different symptoms: gender differences in hostility disappeared after 40 years of age, in obsessiveness and sensitivity after 50 and in depression after 60. Gender differences in anxiety remained consistent over age. Multivariate analysis confirmed these findings and, in addition, showed that gender interacted with length of immigration factor within the fourth decade and with family composition factor within the sixth decade of the lifespan. These findings support our contention that gender difference in the expression of most distress symptoms is an age-dependent phenomenon. The possible determinants of the gender differences in psychological distress are discussed.","PeriodicalId":82818,"journal":{"name":"Stress medicine","volume":"33 5","pages":"17-25"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"50682290","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As part of this evaluation, we administered the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28), Maslach Burnout Inventory, Cooper's Coping Skills Scale, Minnesota Job Satisfaction Scale and a demographic checklist to 586 nurses in 23 centres. Some 18 centres were chosen from England and five from Scotland. Results show that occupational stress levels are rising in nursing. While there is now a greater focus on community nursing, this would appear to be more stressful, though also more satisfying than working in hospital settings. Nurses appear to perceive stressors differently according to their grade. Doctors' opinions regarding the introduction of this new work pattern were collected through the use of an in-depth, semi-structured interview schedule. The study doctors working the on-call rota exhibited higher stress levels than the doctor 'norm' group, and higher than most other professional groups. The introduction of a partial shift system resulted in a marked reduction of stress levels in relation to mental well-being and job satisfaction, and a significant reduction in the effect of stress on physical health. The study doctors perceived that the introduction of partial shifts would undermine the close relationship between continuity of patient care, the 'firm' system and training. The on-call rota was preferred, providing the remuneration for its antisocial aspects was more appropriate. The abolition of 24-hour working and improvements in residential accommodation were perceived as advantageous. The SSRIs that are used to treat depression may themselves aggravate these symptoms further and so delay recovery from the ‘stress-illness vicious circle’. These problems would appear to be considerably less with the newer sedative antidepressant drugs, such as nefazodone and mirtazapine. In a small (N=14) open-label study, data on these factors was recorded before and after 5-weeks treatment with mirtazapine. Since the solution of glutamate in the dose required is hypertonic, the effects of a similar treatment with hypertonic saline (10 percent) were also evaluated. Plasma corticosterone rose in response to both hypertonic saline and glutamate treatment and the response was of a higher magnitude on postnatal day 2 compared to that on day 10. Repeated stress associated with hypertonic saline and glutamate injections resulted in an increase in plasma ACTH and POMC mRNA levels in the anterior pituitary as observed on postnatal day 10. The data provide evidence that the exposure to stress is able to induce a rise in POMC transcription also during the stress-hyporesponsive period. The treatment of neonatal rats with monosodium glutamate provoked a considerable stress response which was significantly higher than that induced by hypertonic saline. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.","PeriodicalId":82818,"journal":{"name":"Stress medicine","volume":"61 5","pages":"255-260"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"50681891","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
