The two groups did not diAer in recalled preevent or postevent distress. Eight months postdisaster, debriefed and non-debriefed oAcers did not diverge significantly on post-traumatic stress symptomatology. Eighteen months postdisaster, however, those who had undergone debriefing exhibited significantly more disaster-related hyperarousal symptoms. We discuss research findings on post-traumatic stress and debriefing, and make some recommendations for crisis intervention following trauma and for further research on the topic. #1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. The authors hypothesize that bus and subway drivers suffer from relatively highest level of ill health as compared to repair service workers and administrative personnel, and that a substantial part of this association is due to the imbalance experienced between high effort and low reward. 1,337 employees participated in this study. Measures of effort-reward imbalance were constructed from a large battery of standardized Likert-scaled items, and factor-based symptom scales were computed. In conclusion, stressful working conditions as defined by effort-reward imbalance are associated with high rates of reported symptoms in public transport workers, especially so in professional drivers.","PeriodicalId":82818,"journal":{"name":"Stress medicine","volume":"8 4","pages":"175-182"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"50680906","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Patients with duodenal ulcer and with functional dyspepsia completed a modified version of the Social Readjustment Rating Scale, ticking the events experienced within the last 6 months. This was done just before the gastroscopy on which diagnoses were based. Neither in total life change score nor in perceived stress were significant differences between groups observed. In one category of events ulcer patients had even lower values than the controls. Our results do not support the widely held notion that stressful life events trigger onset or relapse of duodenal ulcer. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.","PeriodicalId":82818,"journal":{"name":"Stress medicine","volume":"23 10","pages":"121-124"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"50680871","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim was to investigate the relationships between job stressors, coping strategies, job satisfaction and well-being, in light of Karasek's demand–discretion model. The effects of controlling for age, gender and negative affectivity were also of interest. After controlling for these factors, there was found to be no interaction between job demand and discretion for either job satisfaction or psychological distress, so Karasek's model was not supported. Both job dissatisfaction and psychological distress were found to be influenced by lack of resources, while perception of demand was strongly influenced by workload; these were also the stressors that differentiated the two hospital directorates, with the surgical staff suffering higher levels of both. Controlling for negative affectivity had a stronger influence on the measure of distress than on job satisfaction and the two outcome measures were not interchangeable. Recommendations centred on improving structural conditions, especially for surgical staff, and on reducing levels of anxiety and hostility by promoting stress management. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.","PeriodicalId":82818,"journal":{"name":"Stress medicine","volume":"17 4","pages":"99-107"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"50680941","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some reasons for the inconsistencies across studies might be due to the absence of assessing social support dimensions and work stressors. In the present study, data concerning social support at work, work stressors and mental stress among white-collar workers in Japan (N=416) were analysed using signal detection analysis to determine how individual social support variables interact with stressor variables. Two types of higher-order interactions involving social support variables were observed. It is suggested that certain types of social support at work could be effective in redressing the impact of work stressors, but only for certain types of workers who have specific multiple work stressors. These findings were also useful for practical application to domestic occupational health problems. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.","PeriodicalId":82818,"journal":{"name":"Stress medicine","volume":"19 15","pages":"75-81"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"50680879","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
