Self-reported occupational stress was perceived higher among those from the new vs old Federal States, and this was particularly pronounced for those States with their borders in close proximity to the former West Germany. Satisfaction at work was no different for the new and old Federal States, although the evaluation of working climate was deemed more favourable in the newer Federal States. Moreover, the new Federal States were more inclined to adopt low risk-taking and more safety-oriented attitudes than their counterparts in the older Federal States. Conversely, there were no significant differences in accident rate (either at work or whilst driving) between the two categories (new vs old Federal States). Overall, the study shows that subjective experiences of psychological and social processes in the working context remain pronounced 10 years after reunification.","PeriodicalId":82818,"journal":{"name":"Stress medicine","volume":"601 ","pages":"287-297"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1002/1099-1700(200010)16:5<287::AID-SMI875>3.0.CO;2-O","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"50731934","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Little research has been conducted on this group regarding possible work-related health symptoms, as well as interventions in order to reduce work-related stress. This thesis describes the current work-related symptoms and potential risk and salutogenic, i.e. protective factors, associated with these symptoms among software and system designers in a high tech company in Sweden. A stress management intervention program was launched in order to evaluate whether work-related stress might be a risk factors for these symptoms. It was also of interest to study the potential impact of stress management interventions on psychosocial work organizational factors. The thesis is based on cross sectional and longitudinal data. Paper I is focusing on risk factors for musculoskeletal symptoms and headaches, and their possible association with biological markers and self-reported physical and psychosocial work environmental factors. Paper II assessed the association between occupational psychosocial factors and psychosomatic symptoms i.e. mental fatigue, headache, restlessness, irritation, moodiness and difficulty concentrating. Paper III and IV evaluated the effects of a stress management program including three different stress reducing strategies, on musculoskeletal and skin symptoms as well as headaches, and on the perceived psychosocial work environment. The overall results indicate that psychosocial factors via stress sensitive hormones have an impact on employee health in a high technological work environment. Furthermore, stress management interventions, conducted as relaxation and mental training, had short-term favorable effects on some musculoskeletal and skin symptoms. It seems that competence and competence utilization among advanced knowledge workers are psychosocial work environmental factors that need to be take into consideration in future health preventive ventures.","PeriodicalId":82818,"journal":{"name":"Stress medicine","volume":"32 ","pages":"279-285"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1002/1099-1700(200010)16:5<279::AID-SMI866>3.0.CO;2-H","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"50731868","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The questionnaire, filled out by the two partners separately, appeared to succeed well in documenting the types of stressors both the patient and the spouse deemed relevant, It also appeared to provide an integrated picture of the patient's and the spouse's reactions to the patient's stress, considered in terms of emotional appraisal, cognitive appraisal, coping intentions and coping. Spouses were found to attribute greater psychological/psychosocial stress to the patients than the patients did themselves and to reflect greater uncertainty in their appraisal of concrete stress situations Their environment-directed coping suggested that the spouses had the ability to control uncertamty in a manner allowing them to direct their efforts outwards in a desired direction. The questionnaire was seen as potentially useful for judging what psychological and psychosocial interventions are appropriate in such cases.","PeriodicalId":82818,"journal":{"name":"Stress medicine","volume":"910 ","pages":"209-217"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1002/1099-1700(200007)16:4<209::AID-SMI853>3.0.CO;2-X","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"50731126","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
