Goats required 47.7 +/- 1.26 hours on average after injection for parturition. There were no deleterious effects of induction on placental expulsion, kid weight, kid survival, and postpartum fertility of does. Plasma concentrations of progesterone and oestradiol 17 beta followed a similar trend in controls and treated animals. {"title":"[Respiration and motility of epididymal sperm from slaughtered bulls].","authors":"W Halangk, G Gründel, U Tröger, K Zettl","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>The simple method of retrograde flushing of spermatozoa from the epididymal cauda of slaughter bulls yielded an average of 2 x 10(9) spermatozoa from one cauda. The plasma membrane was intact in something between 80 and 85 percent of all epididymal spermatozoa. Respiratory rates and motility were clearly below values typical of ejaculated spermatozoa, though sizeable differences were found to exist for both parameters between individual preparations. The endogenous substrates available proved to be sufficient for such low metabolic activity, whereas higher energy turnover required the presence of exogenous substrates, such as lactate, pyruvate or fructose. Respiratory capacity, determined by uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation in the presence of lactate, was comparable to that of ejaculated bull spermatozoa. {"title":"[Histologic and biochemical studies on the uteri of ovariectomized gilts during the first two months of pregnancy after different hormone substitutions. 1. Changes in the structure of the placenta during pregnancy weeks 3-8 after constant high doses of progesterone and estradiol benzoate].","authors":"U Schnurrbusch, E Ullrich, K Elze","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>Sixteen pregnant gilts were ovariectomised (Groups 1 and 2: 11th to 15th days of gravidity, Group 3: 19th to 22nd days of gravidity, Group 4: 34th to 45th days of gravidity). Daily intramuscular injections of 120 mg of progesterone and 250 micrograms of oestradiol benzoate were applied to them, beginning on the day of ovariectomy to preserve gravidity. All experimental animals were sacrificed between the 21st and 25th days of gravidity (Group 1) and between the 31st and 37th days (Groups 2 and 3) as well as between the 52nd and 61st days (Group 4). Living and dead embryos were numerically recorded, and histological als well as biochemical studies were conducted in all uteri. Embryo survival rates were normal, that is between 62.8 and 80 percent in Groups 1, 2, and 3, with the numbers of living embryos being 9.5, 7.5, and 8.0. Gravidity-specific uterus alterations were typical, despite constant hormone substitution. The thickness of endometrium declined with significance over the period under review. Plication was intensified, while the surface epithelium was flattened. Vascularisation increased, particularly in the subepithelial region, and the endometrial stroma became more oedematous. Full functionality was retained by the uterine glands in the period under review (increase in glandular epithelium as well as rising activity of alkaline phosphatase). The inoculated animals contracted the disease with minor clinical manifestations, accompanied by rise of neutralizing antibodies to PPR virus. Virus was isolated from ocular and nasal secretions, buffy coat, spleen, and liver. {"title":"Toxic effect of dieldrin on gonadotrophin levels (FSH and LH) in serum of mature female albino rats.","authors":"M M Ateia, A A Zaki, W I Korayem","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>Occurrence of hormonal disorders in 32 mature female albino rats fed on a 2 ppm of dieldrin for 3 weeks prompted a study into the effect of the insecticide on hormonal and histopathological changes in rat. FSH levels were significantly decreased in the 1st and 2nd weeks of the experiment, before they returned nearly to normal in the 3rd week. But LH levels, however, were significantly decreased only in the 1st week and slightly increased in the 2nd and 3rd weeks. The biological inhibitor used was a low-molecular protein fraction (OMI) of bovine follicle fluid. N6, O2-dibutyryl-cAMP (0.3-1 mol/l), hypoxanthine (4.0 mol/l), adenosine (0.75 mol/l), and nicotinamide (20.0 mol/l) were the synthetic inhibitors. The OMI-active lyophilisate caused inhibition by 34 percent after 24 hours of culturing. Meiosis was inhibited by 15-28 percent by the synthetic inhibitors. Eight transferable embryos have so far resulted from in vitro fertilisation of oocytes of extracorporal non-ovulatory maturation. {"title":"[Seasonal variations in the formation of virus-neutralizing antibodies in cattle after vaccination against foot-and-mouth disease].","authors":"P Felfe, G Thalmann, G Kreienbrink, K Schiele","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>The GDR in 1977 had been the first country to introduce a laboratory method for potency testing of FMD vaccines on the basis of secured correlations between titres of virus-neutralising serum antibodies of immunised cattle, on the one hand, and their probit-transformed protection against FMD, on the other. This is now the only state-registered method for potency testing. The method has ever since worked well all over the place. An evaluation of results obtained between 1982 and 1988 revealed seasonal variations of anti-FMD immunogenesis in cattle. FMD immunisations from February to July proved more effective than those performed in the rest of the year, in that higher antibody titres were built up within 14 days from vaccination. Mean GSH values were higher in bovine bull semen as compared to mean GSH values in bubaline bull semen. The r of GSH concentration for the pooled data was 0.1278. This trait is 12.78% repeatable. GSH value in semen of bovine and bubaline bull differed insignificantly. {"title":"Prenatal development of adenohypophyseal cell types, ovary, and uterus of dromedary camel.","authors":"I F Marai, T M el Enany, A M Abdine","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>The somatotrophic and thyrotrophic cells were originally developed in the adenohypophysis from undifferentiated chromophobic cells at the foetal age of 4-8 weeks. The follicle-stimulating hormone cells appeared at a foetal age of 24-28 weeks. Prolactin and luteinizing hormone cells were first seen at of foetal age levels of 32-36 and 40 weeks. The germinal epithelium of flattened and cuboidal cells in the ovary was changed to cubical and columnar types, 24-28 weeks of foetal age. The sex cords appeared at 8-12 weeks of foetal age. The primary and secondary follicles were observed at 8-12 and 20-24 weeks of foetal age, respectively. Follicular cavity was noticed at 32-36 weeks, while large follicles encapsulated by follicular sheath were seen in the 40th week of foetal age. Some ovarian follicles degenerated during or after their development. Surface epithelium in the uterus changed from cubical to columnar type at 8-12 weeks of foetal age. The endometrium was clearly distinguished from the myometrium at 16-20 weeks of foetal age.
