This article will focus on the philosophical and political implications of Taylor's theory of the 'Authentic Self'. Taylor has claimed in The Malaise of Modernity that \"the truth in these analyses is that it is not just a matter of changing the outlook of individuals, it is not just a battle of winning \"hearts and minds\", important as it is. Change in this domain will have to be institutional as well\" .1 In our evaluation of this call for institutional change, we will first analyze Taylor's own work on the genesis of the autonomous and authentic self, followed by a brief overview of remarkable comments by some critics. In a next step we will explore his defense of a particular view on the modern Self, inspired both by his opinion on ethics, as well as his attack on a radical behaviorist view of the world and its inhabitants, in particular human beings. In the main part of the article, we will confront these insights with the philosophical inquiries of Michel Foucault and his followers on freedom and power. We will present the debate and enter into the discussion with Patton, Weir and Connolly. The main goal of this article is to stress the importance of the conversation between Taylor's and Foucault's thoughts on the 'homo politicus'. Finally, we hope to 'purify' some of Taylor's ideas, which is a difficult task given the talent of the author to present 'the best of both worlds'.","PeriodicalId":80655,"journal":{"name":"Bijdragen tijdschrift voor filosofie en theologie","volume":"72 1","pages":"432 - 455"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.2143/BIJ.72.4.2152704","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67912147","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

He suggests that the process of appropriation should be understood as a process of parabolization and practiced as an embedding of different texts in one's life-narrative. He argues that, in this way, the Christian texts and the socio-cultural context of Christians maintain an intertextual dynamic relationship with each other and influence each other's meaning. A Christian practice that engages the imaginative process of intertextual interpretation will in tum inspire those who read and interpret such a practice.","PeriodicalId":80655,"journal":{"name":"Bijdragen tijdschrift voor filosofie en theologie","volume":"72 1","pages":"i - i"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/00062278.2011.10689493","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"58596079","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Let us assume that a simple reversion to negative or apophatic theology, even if it should avoid the pitfalls of onto-theo-logy, is inadequate because it cannot progress as far as one would like. It cannot indicatively afftrm anything of God and if it does speak positively, then only hyperbolically, but certainly not indicatively. Let us further assume that the simple denial of God is inadequate because even most forms of atheism save perhaps Paul Tillich' s a-theism labor under the presuppositions of onto-theology simply to view the only escape in the denial that the first being/cause must exist1 or that it be the greatest being and, hence, deserving of the name \"God.\" Alain Badiou presents an alternative to metaphysics as onto-theo-logy that also does not simply collapse into apophatic theology with his notion of subtractive ontology. As his primary criticism against traditional metaphysics, Badiou forcefully writes, \"It is because the One normatively decides on Being that the latter is reduced to what is common, reduced to empty generality. This is why it must also endure the metaphysical preeminence of beings. Metaphysics can be defmed as follows: the enframing of Being by the One\" (Briefings, 34). Yet, Badiou presents his counter-metaphysical process as a neutral event and not one expressing the character of personhood. While his event is not indiscernible and so not without signification, it also cannot bear the proper name (Manifesto, 95). This paper advances a notion of thea-monism, a position inspired through readings of F.W.J. von Schelling's positive philosophy of mythology and revelation. Derrida's reflections on phenomena such as the messianic, the marrano and exemplarity should therefore not be understood as implying that he was struggling to find his way back into the tradition of Judaism. Rather, they represent so many attempts to retrieve conditions, figures, and concepts that are at the root of all monotheistic religions. It is indeed no coincidence, Geraci indicates, that Derrida shows a marked interest for the figure of Abraham, one of the most important patriarchs of Judaism, but at the same time also the founding father of the other monotheistic religions. God's blessing of Abraham, Derrida argued, occurred before they formed an alliance, before their bond was sealed by circumcision, and thus before the foundation of the Law. This other Abraham is a figure that promises the arrival of a universalism beyond Paulinian cosmopolitanism, a universalism that is open to the singularity of the other and thus a universalism that does not project the effacement of difference. Geraci ends her essay with an essential question: is this universalism of the other Abraham a (quasi-)transcendental condition or does it emerge out of the heritage of Judaism? Derrida does not answer this question, but if he nevertheless decides to remain faithful to the tradition of monotheism by retaining the proper name of Abraham for the promise of a universality to come, he is at the same time fully aware of the danger that its provenance could also erase the memory of its concrete theologico-historical inscriptions.","PeriodicalId":80655,"journal":{"name":"Bijdragen tijdschrift voor filosofie en theologie","volume":"72 1","pages":"340 - 342"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.2143/BIJ.72.3.2141839","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67911118","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

He speaks of a kind of 'atheism that remembers God', and he asks immediately whether he would consider himself an atheist. 1 The word 'atheism', in this particular case, does not refer to a conviction, an opinion or to a personal ideology, but is related to time, to what is to come. Atheism is the condition for not anticipating the future. 'To think the future is being able to be atheist' (Derrida 2007a, 21), Derrida claims. Rather than being a notion that denotes the absence of God which would imply that we can have knowledge on the matter -, atheism expresses our relation to 'what' comes or 'who' comes, unpredictably and unexpectedly. Since no one knows what will come, we cannot but face the unknown, naked, but full of experiences and memories. The word 'radical', being preferable to 'absolute' in this case, has a double or ambivalent meaning, since it relates both to what is totally or completely separated or 'absolute' on the one hand, and to what is rooted or has a radix on the other hand. Radical atheism is to be distinguished from 18th and 19th century atheism, which aims at the end of religion or wishes to close all debate on the subject. The radicalism of traditional or historical atheism is not","PeriodicalId":80655,"journal":{"name":"Bijdragen tijdschrift voor filosofie en theologie","volume":"72 1","pages":"265 - 282"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.2143/BIJ.72.3.2141835","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67910535","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
