The control group consisted of 19 patients with other neuromuscular disorders. Twenty, age-matched healthy persons comprised the normal control group. The activity of the cytoplasmic isoform was increased in 85% of Duchenne's dystrophy cases. In these cases the reaction of the cytoplasmic isoenzyme in the presence of pyridoxal 5'-phosphate was abnormal. In the remaining Duchenne's dystrophy cases normal activity of this isoform and normal stimulation to pyridoxal 5'-phosphate was found. The mitochondrial isoform was significantly increased in 30% of Duchenne's dystrophy cases. In all Duchenne's dystrophy patients the reaction of the mitochondrial isoenzyme to supplementation with pyridoxal 5'-phosphate was normal. We conclude that the evaluation of aspartate aminotransferase isoforms in serum in Duchenne's dystrophy can be of clinical importance, especially in evaluating the degree of muscle cell damage.</p>","PeriodicalId":76124,"journal":{"name":"Materia medica Polona. Each test was made with thrombin diluted with 150 mmol/l sodium chloride and 25 mmol/l calcium chloride. The thrombin-in-NaCl clotting time was found to be prolonged in 39% of cirrhotic patients, whereas fibrin polymerization was defective in 65% of them. Dilution of thrombin with calcium chloride diminished the number of abnormal results of both tests in patients with liver cirrhosis. Among the performed tests most sensitive test proved to be the polymerization of fibrin induced by thrombin diluted with sodium chloride.</p>","PeriodicalId":76124,"journal":{"name":"Materia medica Polona. IgA-AT complex and IgM, IgG, and IgA RF were evaluated using a double antibody enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in sera of 83 (61 women and 22 men) patients. The mean level of the complex was higher in RA patients as compared with the control group (0.60 +/- 0.41 U vs 0.19 +/- 0.11 U, p < 0.05). The IgA-AT complex values exceeding the norm were found in 19 of 83 RA cases (23%), mainly in patients non-treated with DMARDs. IgM RF values judged as positive were present in 53 (64%), IgG RF in 55 (66%), and IgA RF in 56 (67%) patients. Higher RF values of IgM and IgG, but not those of IgA class, were found more frequently in patients with elevated IgA-AT levels. A good correlation was established between IgA and IgM RF (r = 0.61, p < 0.01), but not between IgA and IgG, or IgM and IgG RF in the group of patients under study. However, we did not find any significant correlation between isotypes of RF and parameters of the disease activity.</p>","PeriodicalId":76124,"journal":{"name":"Materia medica Polona. In this paper we evaluated random migration and chemotaxis of neutrophils and serum ability to generate humoral factors influencing the neutrophil function. The studies were performed in 51 neonates during the acute phase of bacterial infection and in the remission time. Both random migration and chemotaxis were decreased during the acute phase of disease and normalized during remission. The same was true for serum ability to generate chemotactic activity. The serum of sick neonates did not alter the mobility of neutrophils isolated from adult healthy donors and it did not influence the normal chemotactic activity. We conclude, that the handicapped locomotive abilities of neutrophils in bacterial infection are temporary, and may require in severely ill infants supportive therapy to maintain adequate cellular and humoral immunity.</p>","PeriodicalId":76124,"journal":{"name":"Materia medica Polona. Tumor cells cryopreserved without controlled-rate freezing in medium containing 10% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and 10% Bovine Calf Serum (BCS) for 6 months displayed similar post-thawing viability as cells cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen at -196 degrees C. We recommend this method of cryopreservation as a convenient and less expensive alternative to liquid nitrogen storage. Further studies concerning the maximum storage time at -80 degrees C and studies comparing the optimal composition of the storage medium will further define the limitations and potential of this method.</p>","PeriodicalId":76124,"journal":{"name":"Materia medica Polona. Before UVB irradiation the mean total 1,25-(OH)2D concentration (48 +/- 12 pg/ml) and free 1,25-(OH)2D index (2.0 +/- 0.5) in CGD was not different from the values obtained in age-matched healthy controls (51 +/- 12 pg/ml and 2.0 +/- 0.8, respectively), but the mean PTH levels were significantly higher in CGD (135 +/- 62 pg/ml) than those in controls (45 +/- 19 pg/ml, p < 0.01). During and after UVB irradiation of CGD, mean 1,25-(OH)2D levels (129 +/- 32 pg/ml) as well as free 1,25-(OH)2D index (5.5 +/- 1.5) were on the rise with a maximum reached on the 14th day and were paralleled with a drop in PTH (72 +/- 24 pg/ml) concentration. These data indicate that UVB stimulated calciuria in CGD is due to increased synthesis of 1,25-(OH)2D and suppression of PTH.</p>","PeriodicalId":76124,"journal":{"name":"Materia medica Polona. This process takes place in both bone and soft tissue. The carboxyterminal propeptide of type I procollagen (PICP) and aminoterminal propeptide of type III procollagen (PIIINP) are the major extracellular components of these. We measured serum levels of these procollagens by radioimmunoassay (RIA) in 23 children (aged 6.6 to 12.2, mean: 9.9) with growth retardation (seven of these with growth hormone (GH) deficiency) and in 14 healthy children (aged 6.0 to 12.8, mean: 8.8). A statistically significant difference was revealed between the PICP levels of GH-deficient children and healthy children (P < 0.05). But there was only a marginally significant difference between PICP concentrations of the GH-deficient and the non-deficient (GH-normal) retarded group (P = 0.05). No correlation was observed between PICP, PIIINP and age, height z-score. Our data have demonstrated that the measurement of serum PICP levels may be useful in the diagnosis of GH deficiency.</p>","PeriodicalId":76124,"journal":{"name":"Materia medica Polona.
