The most deformed leaflets are the septal and mural ones. The abnormally situated tricuspid orifice produces a portion of the right ventricle lying between the atrioventricular ring and the origin of the valve. This proximal segment is atrialized. Commonly associated anatomical defects include a atrial septal second defect, a ventricular septal defect, pulmonary stenosis or atresia, and mitral valve prolapse. An accessory conduction pathway (Wolf-Parkinson White syndrome) was found in this malformation. It is thought that this malformation is due to a direct teratogenic effect of lithium on the atrioventricular junction. {"title":"The effect of quinolinic acid administered during pregnancy on the hippocampal formation of rat's offspring (ultrastructural investigation).","authors":"M Beskid, Z Rózycka","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

The pyramidal cells of CA1 hippocampal area of rat's offspring was ultrastructurally examined after quinolinic acid administration to mothers during the gestational period, in order to mimic the congenital metabolic disturbances resulting from an endogenous excess of quinolinic acid within foetal tissues. Hence, quinolinic acid was administered to mothers intraperitoneally in a dose of 60 mmol, once daily, throughout the entire gestation period. Brain specimens were taken on Day 5 after birth, from experimental and control animals. The only observed change within the pyramidal cells was swelling of both neuronal somata and dendrites, as well as a distinct swelling of astroglia cytoplasm and processes. Besides this, toxic effects, like edema signs, were observed. Neurons of the hippocampal formation were found to be particularly susceptible to quinolinic acid toxicity. The highly vulnerable neurons were located within the CA1-area. The neuronal vulnerability correlates remarkably well with those responding to the excitatory effects of quinolinic acid in electrophysiological experiments (Perkins and Stone 1983 a,b). This region was shown to be rich in NMDA receptors (Cotman et al. 1987; Greenamyre et al. 1984). The susceptibility of neuronal cell bodies of the hippocampal formation of an adult mammalian to the quinolinic acid toxicity, has been investigated with great interest (Schwarcz et al. 1984; Taraszewska et al. 1991; Kida and Matyja 1990; Speciale et al. 1987). Yet there is little information on the course of the foetal development. Hence, in our experiments, quinolinic acid was administered to the mother throughout the gestation period in order to mimic the congenital metabolic disturbances resulting from an excess of quinolinic acid within foetal tissues.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
","PeriodicalId":76124,"journal":{"name":"Materia medica Polona. However, among ultrarapid (EM) oxidators with the metabolic ratio (MR) < 0.5 the difference in the MR frequency distribution between 15 patients with bladder cancer (25.9%) and 18 healthy persons (11.25%) was statistically significant. Therefore, our studies provide some evidence of a possible relationship between the EM sparteine oxidation phenotype and the susceptibility to non-occupational bladder cancer. Not statistically significant slight prevalence of the percentage of slow acetylators (SA) (53.1%) among 32 urinary bladder cancer patients in comparison with the percentage of SA (49%) among 45 healthy persons may confirm the conclusion that a slow acetylator phenotype is not associated with the increased risk of the development of non-occupational urinary bladder cancer.
","PeriodicalId":76124,"journal":{"name":"Materia medica Polona. We studied the co-release of NPY and noradrenaline (NA) in patients with essential hypertension (13 females, 11 males, age 42 +/- 13 years) by measuring plasma levels of NPY-immunoreactivity (-ir, radioimmunoassay) and NA (radioenzymatic method) following administration of clonidine (CL 300 micrograms, p.o.). At rest, only NPY-ir levels significantly correlated with diastolic blood pressure (DBP, r = 0.42, p < 0.05). Three hours after CL, there were a decrease in mean arterial pressure and plasma NA (by 31 +/- 14 mmHG, p < 0.05 and 92 +/- 10 pg/ml, p < 0.01) but no change in NPY-ir levels. Patients were subsequently subdivided into groups with high (> or = 90 mmHg) or normal DBP (< or = 89 mmHg) and with or without elevated plasma NA levels (above or below 414 pg/ml, a normotensive mean +1 standard deviation). In hypertensives, but not in those with normal DBP, plasma NPY-ir correlated not only with DBP but also with systolic and mean blood pressure (r = 0.53 and r = 0.60, respectively) at rest. Hypertensives with \"high\" NA had significantly lower resting plasma NPY-ir levels than those with \"low\" NA (7.1 +/- 3.6 vs 14.7 +/- 6.0 fmol/ml, p < 0.05). In the former group, CL evoked the greatest fall in plasma NA, and also decreased NPY-ir levels by 50% (p < 0.05). Thus, patients with essential hypertension were found to display differential patterns of changes in sympathetic cotransmitters to clonidine. NPY may contribute to the increased blood pressure in hypertensives and together with NA, mediate hypotensive action of clonidine but only in the hyperadrenergic subgroup of hypertensives.
","PeriodicalId":76124,"journal":{"name":"Materia medica Polona.
