Although various participatory approaches are already used, it remains unclear how, where, and why participants are engaged within HSS. This systematic literature review investigates the extent of participant engagement, the motivations behind participatory approaches, and the specific health system building blocks that are researched. A comprehensive search identified 140 empirical studies published in English up to May 2023, selected for their focus on HSS and use of participatory approaches involving communities, patients, or citizens. Data were synthesised to assess levels of engagement, motivations, and the health system building blocks targeted.</div><div>Findings reveal that, while participatory HSS studies are increasing in popularity, most studies engage participants primarily in advisory or support roles, with decision-making largely retained by academic researchers, reflecting limited levels of engagement. Common motivations for using participatory approaches include creating change and addressing power dynamics. Additionally, most studies focus on service delivery, with less attention to other critical building blocks, such as health workforce, information systems, and financing. The review further reveals that Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) and Participatory Action Research (PAR) are the most frequently utilised approaches; however, no substantial differences in engagement levels or motivations were found between the different approaches. But overall, there is a notable lack of documentation regarding participant engagement, which compromises scientific rigour.</div><div>This review highlights the need to expand focus beyond service delivery to underrepresented health system building blocks and calls for improved documentation of engagement processes and motivations to advance the field of participatory HSS.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":74826,"journal":{"name":"Social sciences & humanities open","volume":"11 ","pages":"Article 101246"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143094263","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To what extent do sensation seeking and the need for cognition have moderating effects? This study investigates these pertinent questions through the theoretical framework of uses and gratification. The Study delves into five motivations for binge-watching behaviour: Excitement seeking, Diversion, Fantasy, Arousal, and Habitual pastime. The Online Survey conducted across 380 participants in India highlights the significance of these motivations in driving individuals to engage in extensive viewing of adult content on tube sites. Through moderation and regression analysis, the study establishes the causal relationship between individual differences marked by personality traits like sensation seeking and the need for cognition in positively influencing and intensifying binge-watching behaviour. This study, essentially, presents a comprehensive investigation into the motivations behind binge-watching porn tube sites in the Indian demographic framework. It emphasises the interaction between individual differences and the driving forces behind this media consumption behaviour.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":74826,"journal":{"name":"Social sciences & humanities open","volume":"11 ","pages":"Article 101279"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143094653","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using the Sustainable Livelihoods framework, this paper considers how livelihood capitals influence survival strategies among urban beggars in Surakarta, Indonesia. Key findings reveal that financial and social capital plays a significant role in developing an enabling environment to enhance the transition from begging to other non-begging livelihoods; financial stability diminishes one’s dependence on begging, whereas social networks become important access vehicles. Human capital, such as education and vocation, significantly diminishes dependence upon begging. Physical capital most often reinforces dependence by maintaining poverty traps. Surprisingly, environmental quality and physical health had a limited role since beggars are concerned about immediate survival rather than general well-being. A total of 150 beggars were recruited using the time-location sampling method. Out of these, 142 valid responses were analyzed. Different livelihood capitals were quantified through the entropy method, whereas their influence on livelihood strategy was analyzed using logistic regression models. Findings emphasize how such interventions are necessary to strengthen social support networks through community programs with NGO partnerships, expand access to microfinance against financial instability, and skill-building initiatives with appropriate relevance to urban beggars. These findings have operationalized policy insights for designing inclusive poverty alleviation strategies in the rapidly urbanizing context of addressing capital deficiencies and sustaining transitions.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":74826,"journal":{"name":"Social sciences & humanities open","volume":"11 ","pages":"Article 101298"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143094672","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The quality of STEAM education in preschools significantly depends on teachers as they are in charge of organizing STEAM activities for their students. In order to enhance teachers' practice, this study aims to explore the factors impacting preschool teachers' implementation of STEAM activities in the context of Vietnam. The study collected data from 416 preschool teachers currently working in Hanoi City, Vinh Phuc and Dien Bien province. Both the measurement and structural models were examined by applying the Covariance based-Structural Equation Modeling (CB-SEM) through the application of IBM SPSS Statistics 25. The results show that the most influential factor was support from school managers, followed by specialized knowledge of the STEAM fields, and professional attitudes toward STEAM education. On the contrary, in Vietnamese early childhood education, materials and facilities and support from other forces such as parents, colleagues and experts did not significantly influence teachers' practice. The study contributes to the building of scales measuring teachers' professional attitudes toward STEAM education and teachers’ practice of organizing STEAM activities. From the results of this research, policy recommendations have been proposed to improve the quality of STEAM education in the Vietnamese context.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":74826,"journal":{"name":"Social sciences & humanities open","volume":"11 ","pages":"Article 101227"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143093612","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nathan Harris, an American novelist, proposed a fictional discourse in the light of post-emancipation politics that prevailed in the American South during the mid-nineteenth century through his novel, <em>The Sweetness of Water</em> (2021). It depicts the life of two liberated Black slaves namely Prentiss and Landry, working in the peanut plantation of George Walker, a White planter, to achieve their aim of leading an independent life. Beyond featuring the hierarchical conditionalities embedded in post-slavery, this text embodies a novel portrayal of the queer community and its subaltern positionality in a patriarchal hegemonic white society. Consequently, this article provides a sociological study of masculinities involved in the American South plantations with special reference to their societal roles. In the wake of the reconstruction era, this intersectional adjudication of plantation masculinities results in acknowledging ‘gayness’ as a form of White resistance to hegemonic White patriarchy along with advocating the emancipated journey of Prentiss as an absolute indication to emerge oneself as a Black abolitionist.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":74826,"journal":{"name":"Social sciences & humanities open","volume":"11 ","pages":"Article 101250"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143093666","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This concept pertains to the broader production, creation, sharing, and recognition of knowledge by both individuals and groups. This concept also signifies that people who have dominant and crucial positions in social hierarchies are considered competent, listened to, and recognized. This clarifies that they are seldom questioned and said that they are wrong. Consequently, they hold a very usual relationship with knowledge. Knowledge and curriculum are complementary to each other. Curriculum involves the contestation of power in classroom conversations and dialogues. During the teaching-learning process, both the teacher and the students cocreate knowledge by sharing their ideas and socially verifying their viewpoints. They also learn social skills, values, and attitudes that will determine their future paths in life. This paper builds upon the theory of epistemic injustice, including its different types, and the idea that curriculum includes the experiences of knowledge creation, verification, and dissemination in the classroom. Teachers and students participate communicatively in the process of knowledge creation, verification, and dissemination. In this study, the mutual interface of epistemic injustice theory and curricular experiences is explored to strategize an inclusive paradigm for more equitable and just curricular experiences.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":74826,"journal":{"name":"Social sciences & humanities open","volume":"11 ","pages":"Article 101220"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143094262","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Shareholders and stakeholders increasingly demand corporate responsibility, especially due to increasing global resource depletion. Sustainability reporting varies significantly from region to region, with emerging markets facing greater challenges. The lack of synergy between nations and the lack of harmonized corporate reporting hinders efforts to address these issues. Using a multivariate regression model, the study assessed 101 non-financial companies listed in ten sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries from 2016 to 2021. The data was extracted from the study period's audited annual and stand-alone sustainability reports. The influence of audit committee characteristics on social, environmental, economic and disclosure of composite sustainability reporting was assessed. Empirical findings indicate that audit committee independence has a positive effect on sustainability reporting, while the director compensation ratio has a negative effect on it. The result provides policy insights into sustainability disclosure levels in SSA and highlights the need for more independent audit committees. Additionally, it is recommended that executive compensation be aligned with sustainability performance metrics to improve the control and credibility of sustainability disclosures.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":74826,"journal":{"name":"Social sciences & humanities open","volume":"11 ","pages":"Article 101262"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143103373","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, research showed that language teachers had insufficient assessment language assessment literacy (LAL). Thus, this study aimed to explore the components of the LAL construct in the Yemeni context and to assess Yemeni EFL teachers' LAL training needs. For this purpose, a self-report language assessment literacy questionnaire (LALQ), was developed based on Taylor's (2013) LAL theoretical framework and by adopting items from three questionnaires (Fulcher, 2012; Hasselgreen et al., 2004; Kremmel &amp; Harding, 2020). The questionnaire was administered to 471 EFL teachers who taught grades 7, 8, and 9 (ISCED 2) in Yemeni schools. The findings suggested a ten-dimensional model for the LAL which was empirically distinct tailored to the Yemeni context. Teachers' needs analysis revealed that teachers needed training in Knowledge of assessment and Assessment administration and use. The study concludes with implications for teachers' LAL development and for further research in LAL.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":74826,"journal":{"name":"Social sciences & humanities open","volume":"11 ","pages":"Article 101254"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143093669","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By framing heritage not as isolated categories—natural, cultural, underwater, or intangible—but as a holistic entity, we can address pressing global challenges, particularly in the context of ocean management, sustainable development, and public health. The heritage found in our oceans—whether submerged cities, shipwrecks, artifacts, or the intangible cultural practices associated with these sites—holds significant meaning for contemporary communities. These elements of maritime heritage serve as a hidden reservoir of knowledge that reflects the shared history and interconnectedness of human civilizations through their relationship with water. Furthermore, this article emphasizes the importance of local values, beliefs, and practices in promoting the sustainable use of oceanic resources, which is vital for both ecological balance and community health. Integrating the insights and traditional ecological knowledge of Indigenous communities enhances understanding of ocean heritage and its role in fostering good health and well-being. These communities, as stewards of significant cultural and ecological wisdom, can contribute valuable perspectives toward achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-Being). In this way, integral heritage serves as a critical framework that links ocean management, sustainable development, and health, offering holistic solutions to the complex challenges faced by humanity today.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":74826,"journal":{"name":"Social sciences & humanities open","volume":"11 ","pages":"Article 101245"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143093671","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
