In cases where microbiological contamination is detected and decontamination needs to be done with biocides, up-to-date instructions in the Aircraft Maintenance Manuals should be followed to ensure that the correct method and dosage is applied. Although in-service problems with this maintenance task are not frequent, the consequences of its incorrect execution could lead to the occurrence of “a serious incident”. The case study analysed in this paper is related to the event of this type that took place at London Gatwick Airport on 26 February 2020. A full understanding of the sequence of actions that led to the occurrence of this negative functionability event is essential for drawing recommendations for the reduction of the probability of human errors during the microbial decontamination process of fuel tanks of an aircraft, some on which are presented in this paper.","PeriodicalId":72276,"journal":{"name":"Archives in biomedical engineering & biotechnology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46447782","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The samples were taken on the territory of Russia without reference to the manufacturer in accordance with the principle of random sampling. Samples of basic foodstuffs, agricultural products, freshwater and marine fish were taken. Freshwater fish were caught throughout the Volga River, and samples of the main commercial fish species were selected. The analysis was carried out by instrumental neutron activation analysis and atomic absorption spectrometry with “cold steam”. Based on this analysis, food products with the highest and lowest concentrations of mercury were identified. The amount of food consumed by a person at different income levels, and on average for the regions of Russia, was estimated. The daily intake of mercury into the human body with different diets was calculated and it was shown that 50-60% of the total mercury comes from fish consumption. The accumulation of mercury in the muscles of fish caught in the upper and middle reaches, and delta of the Volga River was estimated. The features of mercury accumulation in the muscles of pike, perch and bream were revealed. A comparison of the actual intake of mercury in the human body with a safe daily dose according to FAO and who, which showed that the intake of mercury during food consumption in Russia is within physiologically safe limits. At the same time, a constant and characteristic intake of ultra-low doses of mercury for the entire population of Russia has been identified, the long-term consequences of which have not been practically studied.","PeriodicalId":72276,"journal":{"name":"Archives in biomedical engineering & biotechnology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49028948","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Genetic engineering alters the genetic makeup of an organism using techniques that remove heritable material, or that introduce DNA prepared outside the organism either directly into the host or into a cell that is then fused or hybridized with the host. This involves using recombinant nucleic acid (DNA or RNA) techniques to form new combinations of heritable genetic material, followed by the incorporation of that material either indirectly through a vector system or directly through micro-injection, macro-injection and micro-encapsulation techniques. Genetic improvement has played important roles in improving the desired traits’ efficiency of cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry. It has advanced applications in livestock breeding including increase animal production and productivity (meat, milk, wool), improve disease resistance, and biomedical applications (vaccine production). In livestock, knowledge of effects of specific genes and gene combinations on important traits could lead to their enhanced control to create new, more useful populations. Hence, the objectives of this review were to overview on the genetic engineering and its application in animal breeding, and to highlight the general concepts, techniques, types, importance and limitations of genetic engineering in animal breeding.","PeriodicalId":72276,"journal":{"name":"Archives in biomedical engineering & biotechnology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49190815","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is prompted by factors which may be physiological, pathological, endogenous or exogenous, being responsible for psychic disequilibrium. Perinatality is characterized by multiple hormone variation and stress, which may constitute a risk for mental imbalances. The baby blues is a precocious and transient depressive state of the postpartum, which may occur as a borderline, signalling psychic decompensation. This study aims to investigate the phenomenon in women predisposed to mental disorders, having manifested the baby blues during immediate postpartum. In a case control study conducted in 2015 in two teaching hospitals of Yaoundé, Cameroon over four months, the Kennerley and Gath blues screening permitted to separate the group of “cases” from that of “controls”. After various analyses, women with psychological and psychiatric risk factors including: past history of depression (OR=6.8; p<0.001), past history of postpartum blues (OR=2.3; p=0.002), past history of other psychiatric illnesses (OR=10.21; p<0.01), family history of depression (OR=3.58; p<0.001), family history of other psychiatric illnesses (OR=4.39; p<0.001), current chronic diseases (OR=2.33, p-value<0.001), sickness or complication during pregnancy (OR=2.53, p-value<0.0211) were more susceptible to manifest the baby blues during immediate postpartum. Therefore, women with psychological predispositions, stand a risk of decompensation during the perinatal period including psychiatric disorders of postpartum. Preventive measures such as counselling, keen monitoring and treatment adjustment may help to prevent this phenomenon.","PeriodicalId":72276,"journal":{"name":"Archives in biomedical engineering & biotechnology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47799831","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, CoFe 2 O 4 and its calcium-substituted derivative viz. CS-Ca 0.5 Co 0.5 Fe 2 O 4 MNPs were synthesised via the glycol-thermal method. Furthermore, these MNPs were coated with chitosan (CS) to improve their biodegradability and biocompatibility. The anti-cancer drug, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) was then loaded onto these MNPs to yield CS-Ca 0.5 Co 0.5 Fe 2 O 4 -5FU and CS-Ca 0.5 Co 0.5 Fe 2 O 4 -5FU. XRD results confirmed a single-phased cubic spinel structure for all MNPs. The naked MNPs displayed an average crystalline size of ~9.32 nm, which increased up to 18.20 nm upon coating. The VSM measurements recorded saturation magnetization values (Ms) of up to 73.951 emu/g. Upon polymer-coating, the shielding effect of chitosan resulted in reduced Ms of up to 17.220 emu/g in CS-Ca 0.5 Co 0.5 Fe 2 O 4 MNPs. Release profiles were determined at pH 4.5 and 7.4 over a period of 72 hours. A faster release of the drug was noted at the acidic pH with an accumulative release of 91.00% in CS-CoFe2O4-5FU. Coupled with a strong recommendation for in vitro studies, these MNPs present as attractive candidates to complement current anti-cancer treatments.","PeriodicalId":72276,"journal":{"name":"Archives in biomedical engineering & biotechnology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45034871","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Overall, three phases of hydrophobic recovery were observed, in two of which the degradation of functional groups was shown by a decreasing surface energy. The changes in the acid properties could be quantified by Berger’s method. The treatment in the oxygen plasma leads to an acidic surface with a Dshort value of 1.6. In nitrogen plasma, on the other hand, a slightly alkaline surface is generated with a shortened Berger parameter of -0.3. Regardless of the process gas and the initial nature of the surface, a slightly more acidic surface is formed during storage compared to the reference.
