This is an exploratory descriptive research, with a qualitative approach. Data collection occurred through a semi-structured interview, from August to October 2014, with six caregivers of patients hospitalized in a medium-sized hospital in the municipality of Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul State. The data were analyzed by the content analysis method, identifying two categories: The caregiver's perception about the learning needs; The attendance of the caregiver's learning needs. The study showed that the learning based on empirical, instinctive and observational methodologies, without the participation of the nurse in the process. There is need to improve this learning. The participation of the nurse as an educator in the planning, organization and development of the educational action stands out, since he/she is part of the care; however, the caregivers did not visualize this professional.","PeriodicalId":7185,"journal":{"name":"Acta Scientiarum. This study had the participation of 1192 students from 6th to 9th year of a city in the South of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Data collection occurred through a questionnaire containing: socio-demographic data and the Drug Use Screening Inventory. Drug use was prevalent in adolescents aged 14 and 15 years, atheist, with good family relationships, living with friends/institutions, attended parties once a month, one or two times a week and three and four times a week. There was main damage in the areas of psychiatric disorders, family system and social competence among those who made use of drugs (except alcohol and tobacco). The results point to the need for implementation of preventive strategies of drug use and health promotion in the school context, whereas consumption was associated with significant damage.","PeriodicalId":7185,"journal":{"name":"Acta Scientiarum. The method applied was a cross-sectional study with elderly residents in a long-term institution (LTI) in Brazil, using sociodemographic questionnaire, health conditions questionnaire and Braden Scale. The data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results showed that most seniors had some degree of risk (57.2%) to develop PU, but no elderly presented the condition. Among the elderly at risk for PU, 54.5% of them rate their health as good, 46.7% participate in activities and 52.6% are satisfied with the institution. Conclusions: The absence of PU and positive evaluations of the elderly may be a result of the care offered by the LTI. The Braden Scale is an instrument that enables the planning and implementation of actions to improve the health of institutionalized elderly.","PeriodicalId":7185,"journal":{"name":"Acta Scientiarum. The cell viability and genotoxicity were measured by MTT and MNT assay, respectively. The indicators of osteogenesis were analyzed by alkaline phosphatase activity, total protein content, and calcium deposition. The MTT and MNT assay showed that none of the tested materials was cytotoxic nor genotoxic. Concerning the indicators of osteogenesis, it was observed that cells in contact with all the materials were able to induce the osteogenesis and this process was influenced by the period of the cell culture in contact with bone substitutes. Based on the results of this study, it was concluded that this experimental β-TCP appears to be a promising material as a bone substitute.","PeriodicalId":7185,"journal":{"name":"Acta Scientiarum. A cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample consisting of 70 doctors, working in public and private services, in the city of Belem, state of Para, Brazil. Data were collected using a questionnaire with approaches on: the professional profile; the knowledge of oral health of children; the use of fluoride; and self-perception on knowledge of oral health. A descriptive analysis of the data was performed, and the association between variables was verified with the Chi-square test, with p = 0.05. The average age of respondents was 41 years. Most professionals were females (88.57%) and featured more than 20 years of professional experience (38.57%). In general, most pediatricians answered satisfactorily the questions related to knowledge of children's oral health. However, when questioned about the knowledge of the use of fluoride, most professionals (92.86%) presented outdated knowledge that could result in inappropriate conduct. It was concluded that most pediatricians have knowledge of oral health promotion, although some concepts and conducts should be updated, especially the importance of fluorides in the control of tooth decay.","PeriodicalId":7185,"journal":{"name":"Acta Scientiarum. In the evaluated samples, coagulase positive Staphylococcus (CPS) and Gram negative bacillus were enumerated, and also, it was possible to isolate Klebsiella spp and Escherichia coli . The antimicrobial of less efficiency for CPS was oxacillin and penicillin-G, and for Klebsiella spp ampicillin e cephalothin. It should be emphasized that it was found strains multiresistants of CPS, Klebsiella spp and E. coli . The hospital unit of food and nutrition was evaluated as microbiological inadequate in several points, and it was verified resistance profiles to antibiotics of pathogens isolated in this unit.","PeriodicalId":7185,"journal":{"name":"Acta Scientiarum. Evaluating the motor behavior related to the control and the improvement of muscle activation in practitioners with Down syndrome subjected to hippotherapy. 10 practitioners were divided into two groups: Down Group (DG) – practitioners with DS, and Healthy Group (HG) – practitioners with no physical impairment. The muscles gluteus medius, tensor fasciae latae, rectus femoris, vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, biceps femoris, tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius were evaluated by electromyography using gross RMS values, which correspond to muscle activation; the evaluations were performed on the 1 st and 10 th hippotherapy sessions (frequency: once a week), and after 2 months interval without treatment, they were performed on the 1 st and 10 th hippotherapy sessions (frequency: twice a week). It was noted that activation of the studied muscles increased with the passing of sessions, regardless the weekly frequency of attendance; however, the period without treatment resulted in reduction of this effect. Practitioners with DS presented satisfactory changes in muscle activation pattern, in learning and in motor behavior during hippotherapy sessions.","PeriodicalId":7185,"journal":{"name":"Acta Scientiarum. For extraction of main ideas, Bardin’s content analysis was used. The categories that emerged from the ‘Meaning of caring’ theme were: ‘A lot of love and support’, ‘Hard because of the person’s dependence’, ‘Caring is not hard’, ‘Responsibility’ and ‘Role change’. The conclusion is that caring for an elderly person with stroke sequels involves a variety of aspects and situations.","PeriodicalId":7185,"journal":{"name":"Acta Scientiarum. Although a possible association has been extensively discussed in the literature, the results have been controversial. So that the relationship between Oral Lichen Planus (OLP) and infection by HCV (OLP-HCV) may be investigated, current study conducted an epidemiological survey of all OLP cases diagnosed in two reference projects, with regard to diagnosis, treatment and epidemiology of oral lesions in Maringa, Parana, Brazil. In addition, the clinical case of a patient with HCV and the clinical manifestation of severe OLP will be provided. A total of 3,488 clinical records of biopsies performed between 1994 and 2014 and 85 cases of OLP were selected for the present study. A question about fear of falling was applied in the form of an interview. Statistical analysis used Spearman and Kruskall Wallis correlation. In results, Timed Up and Go (7.13±1.6s), Unipedal Stance (20.52±9.9s), Sitting-Rising (12.43s±3.2s) and Functional Reach (29.51±6.5) showed significant correlation with fear of falling.
