It is a case-control study, and was composed of fourteen healthy volunteers (5 women) with 28 (3.9) years old who underwent low (10 Hz 200ms -1 ) and high (100 Hz 200ms -1 ) frequency TENS. The interventions were randomized and applied for 30 minutes in the trajectory brachial nerve plexus from non-dominant member. Intensities were adjusted every 5 minutes and maintained below motor threshold. The autonomic balance was assessed before and after interventions by heart rate variability (HRV). TENS 10 Hz increased 10% sympathetic activity and decreased 10% parasympathetic activity; however, TENS 100 Hz showed opposite effects (p < 0.05). The sympatho-vagal balance increased with low frequency TENS and decreased with high frequency (p < 0.05). It can be concluded that different frequencies of TENS applied in the trajectory brachial nerve plexus modify cardiovascular autonomic responses. High frequency TENS reduces sympathetic activity and increases the parasympathetic, which favors beneficial effects on autonomic balance in healthy volunteers.","PeriodicalId":7185,"journal":{"name":"Acta Scientiarum. Many are the problems faced by survivors, such as hypermetabolism that may persist years after the event. The aim was to assess aerobic capacity, level of physical activity and pain in adult burn victims after hospital discharge. This is a descriptive, cross-sectional study. Participants (n = 60) were adult victims of moderate to severe burns, evaluated by six-minute walk test (6MWT), Pain Scale and International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). We applied Student’s t-test for independent samples and Mann-Whitney test for comparisons between medium and large burned; Chi-square test to compare the level of physical activity. Large burned (73%) patients prevailed among the 60 participants; there was a statistically significant trend in the distance predicted between groups (p = 0.066), with no change in performance of the aerobic capacity. 60% reported physical activity practice at least three times a week: walking, cycling and soccer. As for the level of pain, 40% reported moderate to severe persistent pain, even after complete healing of wounds. Most participants showed aerobic capacity within the normal range, despite the high body mass index reported, they reported doing physical activities of moderate intensity.","PeriodicalId":7185,"journal":{"name":"Acta Scientiarum. The model is based on two compartments, one representing the entry of glucose in the blood and the other its exit. The rat was submitted to two treatments: ingestion of starch and ingestion of starch plus acarbose. The model showed great suitability, with inferences on the behavior of glucose levels in response to treatments and supplying a richer description than just the area under the curve. The marginal curves for the two treatments are similar during the first moments; however, after reaching the peak of glucose concentration, they progressively became separate due to acarbose treatment and reached the initial levels more quickly. The proposed model, albeit with a single sample unit, showed similar results to those with larger samples; in other words, acarbose significantly attenuates glycaemia after ingestion of starch.","PeriodicalId":7185,"journal":{"name":"Acta Scientiarum. A total of 63 male and female swimming practitioners (38.13 ± 11.72) were evaluated. A socio-demographic questionnaire, WHOQOL-Bref Scale, and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale were used as tools. For data analysis the descriptive statistics, Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test, Mann-Whitney U Test, Spearman’s Rank Correlation Coefficient, and the Univariate Multiple Regression were used. No significant differences were found either for the quality of life or the self-esteem between sexes; there was a significant positive correlation (p < 0.05) among the physical (r = 0.37), psychological (r = 0.36) and environmental (r = 0.30) domains with self-esteem. The regression model explained 20% of the self-esteem variability, with moderate and significant pathways of the physical (β = 0.23) and psychological (β = 0.23) domains, whereas the environmental domain did not show a significant predictive relation (p = 0.988) with self-esteem. It is concluded that a higher quality of life perception may result in a higher self-esteem for physically active adults.","PeriodicalId":7185,"journal":{"name":"Acta Scientiarum. Methods: Adult Wistar male rats (n = 50) were subjected to right nephrectomy and a 2/3 ligature of the renal left vascular branch. Animals were randomly distributed as follows: GI (n = 10) - simulated, GII (n = 20) –8 mm Hg pneumoperitoneum, and GIII (n = 20) –15 mm Hg pneumoperitoneum. After two (GIIA and GIIIA) and three (GIIB and GIIIB) hours of insufflation, and one hour of disinsufflation, they were evaluated for the following aspects: mean blood pressure (MBP), microhematocrit, urinary volume and inulin clearance. Results: The microscopic aspects showed signs of glomerulosclerosis that caused proteinuria. Renal function with8 mm Hg pneumoperitoneum after two hours of disinsufflation (Δ% = 202.68) was better than after three hours (Δ% = 10.89). With15 mm Hg pneumoperitoneum, the renal function was damaged by both procedures, that is, two (Δ% = -3.57) and three hours (Δ% = -3.25). Conclusion: Inulin clearance evidenced renal insufficiency in the model with a 2/3 reduction of renal mass, and depending on both the increase of the exposure time and the pressure intensity, it can be more intensified.","PeriodicalId":7185,"journal":{"name":"Acta Scientiarum. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of LOXi and NIT for the treatment of agitation associated with schizophrenia. A systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the use of LOXi or NIT versus placebo or other antipsychotic agents was conducted, and we evaluated the efficacy (CGI-scale) and safety (adverse events) of the therapies. Altogether, 71 studies were identified, of which 2 (LOXi) were included in the meta-analysis, and 1 (NIT) was included in the systematic review only. The efficacy data showed superiority of LOXi against placebo, regardless of the dose (5 and 10 mg). No significant differences were observed concerning the safety results. Treatment with NIT showed favorable results, with significant reduction of the symptoms. The efficacy of these medications is difficult to assess because of the lack of RCTs. However, there is some information regarding the efficacy and safety of LOXi in the treatment of agitation in schizophrenic patients.","PeriodicalId":7185,"journal":{"name":"Acta Scientiarum. It was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Medicine Faculty of the University of Brasilia, and it received support from Paho and Brazilian Ministry of Health. 1.208 youngsters (18 to 29 years old) in 15 states and Federal District were interviewed at their residences, during the second semester of 2011. Margin of error, adjusted regional and nationally, was 2.8% (CI: 95%), regarding the assessed sample. A KAP scale (knowledge, attitudes, and practices) with 17 questions (-17 to +17 points) was generated. A questionnaire was pre-tested for consistency and validity analysis was performed. KAP scale was used as dependent variable in adjusted linear regression models. Mean KAP score was 5.65 points. Gaps in KAP were: 70% of the youth do not know when the fertility period of a woman is. 42% of youth do not recognize condoms as a method to prevent unwanted pregnancy and STDs. The main factors associated to explaining variances in KAP are gender, education, religion, access to health services, having had sexual intercourse in the last 12 months, and having friends as the main personal reference (p < 0.05). Youngsters with higher education, women, non-Protestant, who claim to know where to find health services have better KAP level of reproductive health. Studies are necessary to support public policies that increase the KAP levels in sexual and reproductive health of the most vulnerable groups, such as the segment comprising low education, men and Protestants.","PeriodicalId":7185,"journal":{"name":"Acta Scientiarum.
