This study examined distress profiles and help-seeking behaviors among diverse healthcare workers who voluntarily completed a mental health screening at one large, academic medical center.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>Between May 1, 2009, and March 27, 2025, 6,237 healthcare students, trainees, staff and faculty at the University of California San Diego Health System participated in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's Interactive Screening Program (ISP). Data from the ISP was used to compare burnout, depression, intense affective states, suicide risk factors, mental health treatment, perceived stigma regarding help-seeking, and attitudes towards institutional support among different racial and ethnic cohorts.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>A disproportionate burden of psychological distress such as depression, suicide risk, and loneliness was revealed among Asian American/Pacific Islander (AAPI), Hispanic/Latino individuals, and multiracial-identifying individuals. Residents completed pre- and post-intervention surveys assessing self-reported confidence and objective knowledge. Data were analyzed using paired Wilcoxon signed-rank tests.</p><h3>Results</h3><p>The intervention was associated with increased residents’ overall confidence in LOC decision-making. The largest gains occurred in less familiar intermediate and community-based settings, such as crisis stabilization units and partial hospitalization programs. Residents reported greater awareness of alternatives beyond inpatient admission or discharge, and objective knowledge scores showed consistent improvement across domains.</p><h3>Conclusions</h3><p>This quality improvement initiative was associated with increased psychiatry trainees’ knowledge and confidence in navigating LOC decisions. Identifying the associated risk factors is essential for creating targeted prevention strategies. This study aims to assess the prevalence of suicidal ideation and to identify the risk factors associated with it among medical students.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>This cross-sectional study surveyed 705 medical students at Islamic Azad University, Mashhad Medical Sciences, in 2023-2024. Participants completed demographic and psychometric questionnaires including the Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, non-parametric tests, and multivariate models to identify independent risk factors for suicidal ideation, with significance set at p < 0.05.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>Approximately 78.3% of participants reported experiencing suicidal thoughts, while 18.6% demonstrated a readiness for suicide, and 3.1% expressed suicidal intent. Multivariate analysis revealed significant independent associations with a history of drug use, prior psychiatric disorders, recent relationship breakups, and academic probation (all p < 0.001). In contrast, age, gender, educational level, and place of residence did not show any significant associations.</p><p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>Suicidal ideation is alarmingly prevalent among medical students. Key risk factors such as substance use, psychiatric disorders, relationship breakdowns, and academic challenges necessitate immediate intervention. In 2021, the NCRP introduced a year-long, expert-led, standardized didactic series for consultation-liaison (CL) and reproductive psychiatry (RP) fellows across the USA (the NCRP Fellows Series). This study examines whether participation was associated with higher scores on a knowledge test and greater self-reported clinical preparedness.</p><h3>Methods</h3><p>Three cohorts of fellows participated annually in weekly virtual sessions from August to June 2021–2024, taught by NCRP faculty and guest experts utilizing core NCRP materials. Participants completed the same 29-question multiple-choice knowledge assessment and a Likert-scale preparedness questionnaire at course start (pre-test) and end (post-test).</p><h3>Results</h3><p>Seventy-five fellows from 26 institutions (<i>N</i> = 35 CL, <i>N</i> = 40 RP) were included in analyses. There was a significant increase in post-test scores compared to pre-test across all participants (mean increase of 3.63 of 29 total points, <i>p</i> &lt; 0.001). RP fellows scored significantly higher on the post-test compared to CL fellows, even after controlling for pre-test scores (mean difference = 2.02 points, <i>p</i> = 0.002). All participants reported a significant increase in self-rated preparedness to treat pregnant women with mental illness (<i>p</i> &lt; 0.001).</p><h3>Conclusions</h3><p>The NCRP Fellows Series — an expert-led, standardized national didactic program — was associated with higher post-test knowledge scores and greater self-reported clinical preparedness. However, in the absence of a comparison group, changes over time may not be attributed to the program alone. The authors conducted a nationwide survey investigating how education and training shape attitudes toward psychotherapy among Italian psychiatry residents and early-career psychiatrists.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>An anonymous online questionnaire (April-September 2023) investigated sociodemographics, psychotherapy training (psychiatric residency and private schools), supervision and personal therapy, self-assessed competencies, disorder-specific effectiveness beliefs, and etiopathogenetic views. Mixed-effects and cumulative link models evaluated correlates of perceived effectiveness and propensity to provide psychotherapy.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>The sample included 453 participants (56.3% female; median age 31), representing 22% of Italian psychiatry residents; 45.5% reported only theoretical training, over one-third lacked supervision, and satisfaction with residency psychotherapy training was modest. Private training was common (39.3%), while two-thirds had undertaken personal therapy. Psychotherapy was considered highly effective for anxiety, eating, and personality disorders, and for most diagnoses when combined with medication. In mixed models, stronger beliefs in traumatic or stress-related etiologies were associated with greater perceived psychotherapy effectiveness, whereas bio-environmental attributions correlated with lower perceived effectiveness. Younger age and later training stage were also associated with higher perceived effectiveness. Finally, inclination towards psychotherapy was linked to the number of patients treated during residency and overall training satisfaction.</p><p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>Findings highlighted the importance of education and training in psychotherapy during residency, as these factors significantly influence the propensity of young psychiatrists to utilize psychotherapy. {"title":"Gender, Racial, and Ethnic Representation in Academic Psychiatry Chairs, 2012 to 2022.","authors":"King T Fok, Jessica J Wang, Nhi-Ha Trinh","doi":"10.1007/s40596-026-02387-9","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1007/s40596-026-02387-9","url":null,"abstract":"<p><strong>Objective: </strong>This study examines trends in gender and racial/ethnic representation in academic psychiatry department chairs compared to faculty in the United States (U.S.).</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>Using data from the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) Faculty Roster (2012-2022), a total of 1722 psychiatric department chairs and 125,333 psychiatric faculty at U.S. academic medical centers were included. Trends in leadership representation by gender, race, and ethnicity were examined using the Leadership Parity Index (LPI). Individuals were categorized by self-identified race/ethnicity (American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino/Spanish origin, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, White) and gender (female or male). An LPI of 1 suggests parity of department chair representation relative to a group's faculty representation, LPI > 1 suggests overrepresentation, and LPI < 1 suggests underrepresentation.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>White individuals (LPI range over 10-year period = 1.1 to 1.19), particularly white men (LPI range = 1.79 to 1.96), were consistently overrepresented as psychiatry department chairs. Women across all races/ethnicities were underrepresented as psychiatry department chairs (LPI range = 0.24 to 0.58). Men were overrepresented (LPI range = 1.54 to 1.70) in every racial/ethnic group, except Asian men. Of all racial/ethnic groups studied, Asian men and women were the most underrepresented (LPI range = 0.42 to 1.07 and 0.12 to 0.30, respectively).</p><p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>Academic psychiatry department chairs continue to be disproportionately overrepresented by white men.
