Today, the term could easily apply to communication networks, which are becoming almost standard in the electrical power infrastructure. The role of communication networks has evolved from rudimentary data collection to, in some cases, becoming the centerpiece of complex wide area distributed data acquisition and control systems. The evolution of communication network technology is a key factor in this role transformation. A brief review of these changes will be presented. The increase in capability has led to a corresponding increase in functionality. As a result, networks are becoming as critical to electrical distribution as the copper cables themselves. To exploit the functionality that can be delivered by communications, the network must be designed to reliably deliver the functionality, performance, and security required to accomplish those objectives. An overview of the design considerations for the communication network will be discussed. As the current technological trend continues so will the future functionality - in particular where remote access and the cloud are concerned. Communication network design to perform this current functionality as well as support these future capabilities is the topic of this paper.","PeriodicalId":67291,"journal":{"name":"中国石油和化工(企业版)","volume":"31 1","pages":"1-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86585359","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The extensive human interaction with these low-voltage (less than 1,000 V) circuits makes a low-voltage MCC a location of significant potential hazard. The large number of low-voltage MCC circuits results in significantly more human interface time with low-voltage MCC equipment than with medium-voltage MCCs and switchgear. Modern protection and control systems derived from medium-voltage (1,000 V to 38 kV) and high-voltage (38 to 765 kV) power systems have much to offer low-voltage MCC systems. Proactive maintenance indicators based on load characteristics, motor start characteristics, and thermal measurements are described. Time synchronization, modern Ethernet-based protocols, sequence of events records, oscillography (COMTRADE), monitoring and alarming for protection functions, and other previously standard features in medium- and high-voltage protective relays are available in modern low-voltage MCC protective relays. Increased safety in the form of advanced protection elements and arc-flash detection are now also available. This paper focuses on the philosophy of a comprehensive low-voltage MCC protection and control system.","PeriodicalId":67291,"journal":{"name":"中国石油和化工(企业版)","volume":"44 1","pages":"1-9"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83024695","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This disciplined process involves special equipment markings, an optional comprehensive risk assessment after area classification, and a selection criteria to identify the equipment that can be installed in hazardous (classified) locations. The optional comprehensive risk assessment involved with this process is subsequent to the classification of the area, and may allow for the selection of equipment that would not normally be associated with the involved area classification designation. And while the term EPLs may be relatively new and all aspects of the concept not fully implemented in the US, the concept of assessing the risks and consequences associated with a classified area, and the utilization of mitigation methodologies to address the selection of equipment for a given classified area, is not new. For example, the use of combustible gas detection systems and pressurized enclosures are common mitigation methodologies in US classified areas. A broad-based perspective on adoption and implementation of all aspects of these EPL concepts in the US will be provided by representatives from US codes & standards, product certification, area classification and installation communities.","PeriodicalId":67291,"journal":{"name":"中国石油和化工(企业版)","volume":"22 1","pages":"1-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86715919","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

From experience, the cause of these motors being removed from service is mainly due to hot spots on the rotor, which eventually causes this excessive vibration. Accordingly, this paper will introduce several maintenance testing measures when dealing with Induction Motor rotors impacted by such hot spots. Even though Induction Motors are considered the workhorse of modern industry, and their rotors being very reliable in terms of their design and average life, the hot spots will cause a rotor bow phenomena. In the Oil and Gas industry, a rotor bow cannot be tolerated, since it could lead to extended downtime, and associated production loss. Industrial plants must safe guard against such conditions by developing their plant engineers' technical knowledge, which would include basic information about the symptoms and causes of the rotor bowing phenomenon. This paper will also detail a testing measure applied at a large oil and gas company for identifying and attempting to resolve rotor bows due to hot spots.","PeriodicalId":67291,"journal":{"name":"中国石油和化工(企业版)","volume":"57 1","pages":"1-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74391111","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The life and reliability of electrical equipment in this age range can be compromised due to operating conditions such as exposure to moisture and chemicals, loading, temperature, vibration, and mechanical stress over the life of the equipment. Electrical equipment operating and life cycle philosophies tend to vary from age based replacement to run-to-failure. This results in an ad-hoc approach for determining the appropriate time for equipment replacements or major repairs. Limited resources, funding, and other competing projects exacerbate the issue. An operating and life cycle management philosophy using preventive and predictive maintenance results to prioritize equipment replacements and/or improvement will help optimize how to determine when equipment repair or replacement is justified. This paper will describe a systematic risk based approach of prioritizing electrical equipment replacement and repair projects to improve electrical reliability and safety. The approach uses probability and consequence techniques for equipment repair or replacement.","PeriodicalId":67291,"journal":{"name":"中国石油和化工(企业版)","volume":"1 1","pages":"1-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76361365","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Engineers may bias towards protection at the cost of system reliability or towards desired (or code required) selectivity, at the cost of protection. The need for compromise is often accepted as an unalterable reality. Simultaneously, the need for greater personnel safety has added a desire for space protection in addition to the usual bus protection imperative. The Industry has provided devices, techniques and schemes to minimize, and even eliminate, this compromise. Tools include smarter instantaneous sensing algorithms, differential protection, zone-selective-interlocking and arc flash relays. Zone-selective-interlocking is a cost effective solution for low voltage (LV) and medium voltage (MV) applications. Today zone-selective-interlocking spans different voltages, between inverse protection characteristics, such as short-time slopes and fast instantaneous protection, in both low and MV systems. However, traditional schemes must still nest pickup current thresholds to accommodate sensing tolerances. Arc flash relays have emerged as excellent space protectors but present concerns in LV applications. This paper reviews recent improvements in zone-selective-interlocking capabilities and presents schemes, developed by the authors, which eliminate the need for nesting pickup levels of multiple devices and for successfully mixing arc flash and current sensing devices into one system to simultaneously provide fast, reliable and sensitive protection.","PeriodicalId":67291,"journal":{"name":"中国石油和化工(企业版)","volume":"8 1","pages":"1-10"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85179753","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present overriding challenge is to maximize energy efficiency and reduce energy usage. A significant stage in accomplishing this challenge is the emphasis on the installation of premium efficient motors compliant with National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) Standard MG1-2011 table 12-12 Premium Efficiency Electric Motors. All efforts to improve energy efficiency and reduce energy consumption are good. Increasing the efficiency of electric motors is fundamentally a correct approach. However, it is necessary that the effects of increased motor efficiency be fully understood and broadly utilized in order to prevent unexpected effects on the system that reduce or negate energy savings. Energy efficient motors run faster than conventional efficiency motors; this must be taken into account when predictions of energy savings are undertaken. It is essential that the system as a whole is addressed for the purpose of assessing energy use and the potential for energy savings. Improved single component performance within the system rarely produces the expected economies and may even be the source of disappointment when the predicted savings are not realized.","PeriodicalId":67291,"journal":{"name":"中国石油和化工(企业版)","volume":"19 1","pages":"1-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75029746","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
