Understanding the efficiency requirements of IEC and NEMA is crucial in both producing and purchasing the right type of electric motors to meet various efficiency requirements. In addition to the efficiency values, understanding the tolerances that are associated with these efficiencies is important as well. As shown in IEC, NEMA efficiency tables, for every horsepower rating there is a nominal efficiency value, and a tolerance associated with it. The main factors that influence the efficiency value and its tolerance are motor designing, manufacturing, testing and operations. To help readers understand motor efficiency and motor efficiency tolerances, first, this paper will examine the IEC, NEMA requirements and the differences between them. Secondly the paper will analyze the factors that affect the final efficiency value and its tolerance. Lastly, the paper will examine production data to illustrate what influences the efficiency bands and what efficiency tolerance is achievable on the production lines.","PeriodicalId":67291,"journal":{"name":"中国石油和化工(企业版)","volume":"16 1","pages":"1-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81697182","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With increased demand for product and project schedules increasingly shortened, new methods for maximizing uptime and project expediency have become necessary. In remote locations where contract and commissioning resources are limited, organizations need the ability to operate self sufficiently, with less people and with more agility than ever. Additionally, many production sites have equipment spread out over vast land areas making it difficult and time consuming to troubleshoot problems. Combining power systems equipment into integrated, pre-assembled skids allows for rapid installation and commissioning, and provides significantly improved transportability. Incorporating communication technologies into these skids allows the transmission of vital operational data (i.e. differential protection scheme data, feeder status, metering data, fault data, etc) to a decentralized location. Transformer and breaker monitoring capabilities are very important to the early notification of impending problems in the substation. The ability to energize sites with smart, modular building blocks improves power system reliability and overall uptime for remote sites. This paper discusses an application in the oil and gas industry where adoption of a modular skid and technologies were combined as a pilot for future substations in gas (coal bed) fields. The sites represented in this application are not staffed and are not close to operating personnel. The result of this creates a drastic reduction in response time when problems in the substation arise.","PeriodicalId":67291,"journal":{"name":"中国石油和化工(企业版)","volume":"213 1","pages":"1-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75872397","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The significance of each piece of data on the study results are not the same, so the possible errors in collection and application of such data would not have the same impact on the final calculated incident energy. Therefore the determination of erroneous areas and how they would affect the study results will give the study engineer a better recognition of the study results reliability and how to be concerned about the validity of input data. The existing arc flash incident energy exposure calculation methodologies presented in IEEE 1584–2002/2004 and NFPA 70E-2009 standards are based on a general approach requiring three major parameters. These well-known parameters are bolted or arcing fault current, arcing time duration, and minimum working distance from the arc location. The first two, bolted or arcing fault current and arc duration, are systematic parameters calculated from configuration and characteristics of the modeled electrical network. But the minimum working distance is a physical parameter that is defined based on the voltage, enclosure, and type of the implemented task on equipment. In this paper, the possible errors in these areas and their impacts on calculation of thermal exposure to incident energy are discussed and recommendations are made to increase the possibility of achieving more conservative results leading to safer working environment.","PeriodicalId":67291,"journal":{"name":"中国石油和化工(企业版)","volume":"41 1","pages":"1-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77604552","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The use of IEC61850, a mature communications technology, as a toolbox to develop applications in an open environment is now possible beyond what was permitted by the former generation of communication protocols. The benefits of IEC 61850 have become more apparent since innovative applications of utmost importance can now be materialized as compared to the traditional legacy technology. The paper focus is two advanced applications for the Oil & Gas industry that benefit from IEC61850: — Distributed Fast load shedding, i.e. managing on the same site multiple substations and generation machines. — Data optimization between substation HMI's and the Control Room DCS (Digital Control System). These applications use GOOSE (Generic Object Oriented Substation Event) messages, a multi-casted message defined by the IEC 61850 standard, to replace traditional wiring between protection relays, digital meters, bay computers etc.","PeriodicalId":67291,"journal":{"name":"中国石油和化工(企业版)","volume":"215 1","pages":"1-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74449747","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They have been in use for the past thirty years, but for several reasons, including cost, have been limited to niche applications (such as high-speed turbomachines) that required their unique capabilities. Recent advances in the technology are making it more practical to apply these bearings in a broader range of applications. They have become much smaller, simpler and economical. In response, API Standards 617[1] (centrifugal compressors) and 684[2] (rotor dynamics) are being revised and will include sections on magnetic bearings. Other API Standards will surely follow suit. Hence, it is timely to review the actual operating history and performance of magnetic bearings, while taking a fresh look at the economics. In addition to a very basic (and generic) explanation of how these bearings work, this paper will examine the actual operating experience of one user in refining applications, as well as the overall experience within the oil & gas industry (including substantial experience in gas transmission). The paper will also offer a detailed economic analysis of the cost/benefit vs. oil lubricated bearings in a variety of applications that are important to the petroleum and chemical industry.","PeriodicalId":67291,"journal":{"name":"中国石油和化工(企业版)","volume":"8 1","pages":"1-9"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82223634","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this edition, the requirements for Electrical installations in hazardous areas (other than mines) including areas endangered by combustible dust were merged for the first time. With the introduction of Equipment Protection Levels (EPL), new options for the selection criteria for electrical equipment are given. The risk assessment carried out may make it possible to use equipment with a higher or even a lower EPL as required for the corresponding zone. Work on the next edition has been started to eliminate some weak points and to add new techniques. In US the IEC based zone classification system was introduced into the NEC [2] in its 1996 edition and, in 2007 OSHA introduced the zone classification system as an alternative to the traditional division classification system. Articles 505 and 506 in the NEC have allowed IEC type equipment to be used within the U.S, however this equipment must also meet the ordinary location standards of the U.S. and any variations in the national adoption of the IEC standards. Due to U.S. national variations to IEC standards, lack of adoption of some IEC standards, including IEC60079–14, and differences in electrical installation practice, there are significant differences in what is done in installations in the U.S. and what is done in the IEC world. However, while there are great differences existing, there are also opportunities for global organizations to attempt to provide modifiable global solutions both now and in the future.","PeriodicalId":67291,"journal":{"name":"中国石油和化工(企业版)","volume":"156 1","pages":"1-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79543231","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
