This paper will review the historical and current approaches to electrical equipment maintenance, and also provide available technologies which support the future modes of equipment maintenance. Low Voltage and Medium Voltage systems will be reviewed. The need for improved reliability and uptime continues and effective monitoring systems support a new concept of Zero-Planned Outages. Monitoring parameters linked to potential failure modes allows for two key needs to be addressed: first, to notify end-users of a pending failure condition; and second, to recommend maintenance and/or inspections based on a trending analysis of failure mode contributing parameters rather than planned outages. This paper shall review both IEEE and end-user surveyed failure indicators and technologies to continuously monitor and alarm on such failure indicators.","PeriodicalId":67291,"journal":{"name":"中国石油和化工(企业版)","volume":"71 1","pages":"1-9"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76088611","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper will provide an update on current rules under study for 1 through 500 HP AC induction motors. The DOE is evaluating raising motor efficiency above premium levels by one to three NEMA efficiency bands. The motor industry feels that a better solution is to standardize on premium efficiency levels and broaden the scope of coverage to include many designs not presently covered. NEMA has formed a coalition with many energy advocates that also support the proposal. The paper will discuss the DOE rule making process, study and proposals and discuss the effect to motor users if they are adopted. The coalition proposal will be discussed showing that stabilizing at premium levels will provide the least impact to the end user. Motor regulations for Canada and Mexico generally follow what is adopted in the US. Europe and the rest of the world are also adopting Minimum Efficiency Performance Standards (MEPS) but are lagging the US by a few years.","PeriodicalId":67291,"journal":{"name":"中国石油和化工(企业版)","volume":"49 1","pages":"1-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85572042","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are two main areas of concern for products used in cold weather - safety and function. For Class I classified locations the ability of the equipment to maintain its explosion protection properties at low temperatures is of major importance. Low temperatures affect both the properties of the materials used in the construction of the electrical equipment and the properties of the explosive atmospheres the equipment can be exposed to. Functionality of the electrical equipment can also be altered or negatively affected by cold temperatures. This paper will examine factors affecting the safety of equipment in areas classified for explosive atmospheres as well as functionality of electrical equipment at low temperatures.","PeriodicalId":67291,"journal":{"name":"中国石油和化工(企业版)","volume":"27 1","pages":"1-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85505458","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Valdes [1] has proposed an adaptation of FMEA suitable for analyzing hazards and the effects of various hazard mitigation measures in the context of specific tasks that are performed on hazardous equipment or a hazardous system. The effects of each hazard mitigation solution on the frequency each task is performed, likelihood of an incident, and severity of the resultant incident are analyzed for each activity performed on the system. The relative hazard reduction of the mitigation solution may then be compared with the cost of implementing the solution. Multiple solutions can be analyzed and the level of hazard reduction vs. the cost of implementing the solution can be ranked according to cost-effectiveness. This analysis can be used to develop a business case for implementing hazard mitigation projects or features within planned projects. This paper details how one facility utilized the FMEA-based hazard analysis tool developed by Valdes to assess hazards present in existing facilities and new facilities that were in the design stages.","PeriodicalId":67291,"journal":{"name":"中国石油和化工(企业版)","volume":"1 1","pages":"1-18"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84364064","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These enclosures are sustained without the additional safety systems required to ensure operation of a purged and pressurized piece of equipment. Similarly, NEMA Type 7 enclosures are maintained without the costly component inventory which may be required to ensure maximum uptime of non-serviceable encapsulated equipment. NEMA Type 7 enclosures are generally constructed of cast aluminum or iron-based materials and are capable of withstanding numerous explosive events. NEMA Type 7 enclosures ensure hazardous area safety by extinguishing the flame through precision machined surfaces and controlling structural deformation should an explosive event occur. If maintenance practices are not designed to ensure the integrity of the enclosure, repeated access to internal equipment and oxidation of critical surfaces may lead to the loss of the enclosure's explosion-proof protection. The paper reviews maintenance best practices and common errors with their potential consequences. The likelihood of error may be reduced by employing a variety of available technologies. Each technology will be explained based on case study examples to illustrate the reduction in total cost of ownership for equipment when best practices are observed.","PeriodicalId":67291,"journal":{"name":"中国石油和化工(企业版)","volume":"38 1","pages":"1-10"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85905501","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specifically, a modern squirrel cage induction motor design is compared to both a permanent magnet motor with high energy magnets and a high temperature superconducting motor using second generation superconductor. The selected baseline design is a ship propulsion motor in operation rated at 5000 HP 1800 RPM. The results of calculated performance and comparative studies among the various technologies show great potential for increasing the power density using the second generation high temperature superconducting technology. Using the currently available second generation superconductor current capabilities, the achieved power density of the propulsion motor is over twice that of the induction motor. Further investigations are being carried out to improve the superconductor performance for future designs for an on-going project sponsored by the United States Department of Energy to reduce the cost of the superconductor for future commercial applications of the high temperature superconducting technology.","PeriodicalId":67291,"journal":{"name":"中国石油和化工(企业版)","volume":"29 1","pages":"1-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88438793","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is a traditional offline inspection where the stator is placed in complete darkness, each phase is energized to 115% of rated line-to-neutral voltage, and both ends of the stator are observed to determine the presence, location and severity of endwinding surface partial discharges (PD). The setup for the test may be complex and risky due to the need for observers to be standing in darkness close to the energized parts of the stator. The test results are qualitative and strongly depend on the observer's eyesight and individual perception. A safer and more accurate alternative is to use an ultraviolet (UV) camera or viewer. The observed PD activity may be observed in ambient lighting, recorded, and quantified through simultaneous offline PD measurements. This paper describes the two inspection techniques, and presents experimental validation of the UV corona camera inspection method as a suitable replacement for a black-out test. Sample 13.8-kV coils were wound in a fixture simulating their relationship in a stator winding, and subjected to high-potential tests while observed under black-out conditions and with a UV corona camera in ambient lighting. The stator windings from two high voltage compressor motors were inspected using the same camera. Recorded images of the observed discharges and measured PD activity in the sample coils and stator winding were used to compare the evaluation by each test method.","PeriodicalId":67291,"journal":{"name":"中国石油和化工(企业版)","volume":"9 1","pages":"1-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73056978","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These power systems are much different than the utility grid. Being smaller they are subject to large disturbances causing wide variations in turbine power over short periods of time. These power swings can have negative effects on some types of turbines designed to have low emission of nitrogen oxides. Such turbines use different firing methods at low and high values of power. The transition between these ranges and firing methods can lead to flame out. Turbines struggling to maintain power system stability at an industrial facility may succumb to the disturbance resulting in a system collapse and loss of production. Regulations concerning emissions are becoming more severe so this problem will become more challenging. Turbine firing techniques that allow low emissions for all values of output power are reviewed. The benefits this offers to the power system and the design of the Power Management System are also discussed. Using only one firing technique eliminates the risk of flameout and enhances power system availability. Another advantage of this firing technique is better parallel operation of turbines, especially when machines have different ratings. Operating all turbines at the same relative power improves stability since all machines will react by the same amount during disturbances.","PeriodicalId":67291,"journal":{"name":"中国石油和化工(企业版)","volume":"108 1","pages":"1-11"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80910761","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Three different approaches are analyzed and compared. The first one is recommended in North American Standards, such as APl500 [1], APl505 [2] and NFPA 497 [3]. The second is one of the proposals for the second edition of the International Standard IEC 60079-10-1 [4] (adopted as European standard EN 60079-10-1). The third approach had been previously worked out with the authors' contribution and had been adopted by the Italian Guide CEI 31-35 since 2001 [5]. The last two approaches are analytical, meanwhile the first one is prescriptive. In the second part of the paper both analytical approaches are applied to the releases which are analyzed in NFPA 497 [3] as practical examples. Resulting hazardous area extents are compared and the differences among the three methods are discussed.","PeriodicalId":67291,"journal":{"name":"中国石油和化工(企业版)","volume":"58 1","pages":"1-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89759138","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The refinery has a secondary selective system and gets its power from utility company via two main power transformers. Each transformer is rated 60/80/100MVA, ONAN/ONAF/OFAF, with 115kV primary and 34.5kV secondary. The latest expansion project was committed to reserve at least 10MVA in each transformer for future growth in a single-ended condition while supporting the total refinery load. Several options were considered and evaluated to enhance the transformer's forced-cooled (OFAF) capacity (100MVA). One option was to improve the existing cooling system of each transformer. Another option was to replace both transformers with new ones having higher MVA ratings. The option of installing capacitor banks was evaluated and accepted by the project management because of its cost effectiveness, practicality, reliability, and constructability. This option relieves transformers a certain amount of reactive load (VAR) from the total apparent load (kVA) by installing two banks of power factor correction capacitors at their 34.5kV secondary sides. As a result, each main transformer can provide the extra 10 MVA capacity for future load growth.","PeriodicalId":67291,"journal":{"name":"中国石油和化工(企业版)","volume":"1 1","pages":"1-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90316377","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
