We have explored that absolute faithfulness of original style in translation is impossible because of the linguistical and cultural differences between English and Chinese. The beauty and subtlety of its words and expressions in Fortress Besieged are of great aesthetic value; especially the metaphor expression used is the essence of the novel. Eco-translatology advocates that translation is an adaptation and selection process which should be applied in language, culture, and communication and it stresses the central role of translator, so as to ensure that the translation remains the longevity and has vitality in the target language. {"title":"An Experimental Study on Monosyllabic Tone in Taihe Dialect","authors":"XIE Qianqian, ZHANG Haoruo","doi":"10.17265/1539-8080/2023.04.005","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.17265/1539-8080/2023.04.005","url":null,"abstract":"In this paper, the experimental phonetics method is used to study the monosyllabic tone of Taihe dialect. 288 recorded language materials were analysed by Praat speech analysis software, and the fundamental frequency data were extracted and normalized to obtain the tonic type and value of the tones of Taihe dialect, which were 213 for the level tone, 44 for the rising tone, 23 for the falling-rising tone, and 52 for the falling tone. Compared with the traditional investigation results of single-character tone in Taihe, the tone type and tone value of the level tone have not changed greatly, while the tone types of the rising tone, the falling-rising tone, and the falling tone have not changed basically, and the tone values have all decreased. In the context of radical translation, the translator’s using tendency of translation method essentially represents his or her communicative mentality, the willingness of both sides to communicate, and historical background. Before translating, translators must examine the semantic correspondence between the source language and the target language, and then choose different translation methods accordingly. The sound-meaning relation of a language reveals the culture and ideas of the source language, and whether the translation reflects such relation of the source language also shows the translator’s mentality when the two languages communicate. This paper explores English sound-meaning relation by examining the rootology study, original phonology, root phonological relationships, and morphological changes. By reviewing the historical materials of early E-C communication, this paper collects relevant cases of radical E-C translations and investigates them from the perspective of English sound-meaning relation.
