{"title":"The Effectiveness of Explicit Vocabulary Instruction on Productive Vocabulary Learning in Writing Among Intermediate School Learners in Saudi Arabia","authors":"None Salih Alzahrani, None Meshal Alhomyani","doi":"10.17265/1539-8072/2023.08.001","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.17265/1539-8072/2023.08.001","url":null,"abstract":"This study aimed to identify the effectiveness of explicit vocabulary instruction on productive vocabulary learning in writing among intermediate school learners in Saudi Arabia, verify the existence of any statistically significant differences at the significance level of 0.01 between the mean scores of the post-test of the control group and the experimental group in the vocabulary test, and verify the existence of any statistically significant differences at the significance level of 0.01 between the mean scores of the pre-and post-test of the experimental group in the vocabulary test in favor of the post-test. The study community consisted of all intermediate school students in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, while the study sample included 30 students. The experimental method was adopted to identify the effectiveness of explicit vocabulary instruction on productive vocabulary learning in writing and the achievement test was used as the study tool. The study reached many results including there were no statistically significant differences at the significance level of 0.01 between the mean scores of the post-test of the control group and the experimental group in the vocabulary test and there were no statistically significant differences at the significance level of 0.01 between the mean scores of the pre-and post-test of the experimental group in the vocabulary test in favor of the post-test. Based on the 4R theory in marketing theory, this paper takes Quzhou Jianglang Mountain as the research object and finds that the following problems exist in the new media marketing of Quzhou Jianglang Mountain: 1. The new media users are not closely enough connected; 2. the response to the new media market changes is not fast enough; 3. the new media marketing relationship interaction is not timely enough; and 4. the return of new media marketing is not ideal. The new media marketing strategy of Quzhou Jianglang Mountain Scenic Spot is proposed from four perspectives: association, reaction, relationship, and return. In daily interactions, the use of address terms is unavoidable. Therefore, the choose of address terms is particularly critical to make communicate smoothly with people. Previous scholars have studied address terms from a wide range of perspectives. But there is not much research on Chinese address terms based on speech act theory, which is put forward by John Langshaw Austin. By observing communicative conversations, several findings have been emerged from the analysis. They are professional title, affectionate address terms, and common address terms. These findings express the existential significance of address terms, which are the premise for people to maximize their illocutionary act when communicating. Call to Arms (1923) and Wandering (1926) represent the greatest achievement of Chinese story-writing at that time. His short stories are not only profound in thinking, but also worthy of admiration for their great value and innovation in art. Since the 1920’s, Lu Xun’s stories have been translated into various languages and published throughout the world, enjoying an international reputation. Only their English versions in the 20th century are discussed within this paper. It aims to investigate coinage used by senior high school students. This paper also investigates other word formation processes involved in coined words and the reasons why the students use them in their everyday conversation. The collected data from direct elicitation and interviews were categorized into the types of coined words and analyzed in terms of their formation processes by using a method of analysis based on theories as proposed by Yule (1985), Potter (1975), O’Grady and Guzman (1996), and Gerber (1968). The findings show that there are 10 groups of word formation processes in this study. This paper presents a qualitative analysis of the findings of a sociolinguistic survey geared towards coinage as used by students of both Osei Tutu Senior High School and Bisease Community/Senior High School speech communities. It is also imperative to state that these two schools are located in typical Akan speaking communities. Osei Tutu Senior High School, situated in Akropong, in the Ashanti region of Ghana, is a single sex school (boys’ school) and Bisease Community/Senior High School on the other hand is situated in Ajumako-Bisease in the central region. The meanings of culture-loaded words contain the profound cultural connotation of a country or a nation. However, due to the influence of different cultures, the original author and the target readers lack a common cognitive context, which means they cannot successfully conduct a cultural communication. Therefore, correctly understanding and translating these culture-loaded words have become a major problem for translators in the translation process of literary works.
