Data-based studies involving mentoring in sport contexts were located, retrieved, reviewed, and analyzed. The primary search criteria for this literature review were data-based, peer-reviewed articles published between the years 2005–2016 involving the salient keywords mentoring and sport, which yielded 18 peer-reviewed articles for inclusion in this review. In this review, each study’s purpose(s), theoretical framework(s), data collection strategies, data analysis procedures, and results are presented. Emergent themes included: (a) mentoring of vulnerable populations, (b) attributes of mentors, and (c) outcomes of mentoring relationships. Lastly, practical implications based on the findings are discussed. Five strategies are developed as a measure to improve mentoring relationships.","PeriodicalId":56347,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of Sports and Athletes in Education","volume":"14 4","pages":"140 - 164"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2020-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/19357397.2020.1768033","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41261799","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Universities competing at the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) make up the highest level, while universities competing at the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) are the level below. The purpose of this exploratory study was to determine if student-athletes from FCS schools had an increased potential for injury when competing against teams from the FBS level. A qualitative methodology was used while collecting data from eight FCS athletic trainers consistently involved in guarantee games. Because athletic trainers work to prevent injuries, the opportunity to hear rich, qualitative narratives was the foundation for this study. The findings indicated that a majority of FCS athletic trainers (N = 7) said their student-athletes suffered from increased soreness and in-game injuries following games against FBS schools.","PeriodicalId":56347,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of Sports and Athletes in Education","volume":"14 1","pages":"83 - 99"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2020-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/19357397.2020.1768035","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45458119","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As well, there is a great deal of literature highlighting the prevalence of stress in athletics. Given the connection between stress and well-being, as well as stress and performance, the focus of the current study was to more completely and directly assess prevalence of stress and specific stressors experienced by collegiate student-athletes in the United States. Participants included students-athletes from a variety of sports, academic years and athletic divisions. Male and female athletes (N= 525) completed a stress appraisal and demographic questionnaire. Qualitative analysis of student-athlete responses yielded the following four most consistently cited stressors: (a) injury, (b) big moments/big games, and (c) fitness/conditioning, and (d) playing time/starting. Recommendations for future research and suggestions for student-athlete programing aimed at minimizing stress will be discussed.","PeriodicalId":56347,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of Sports and Athletes in Education","volume":"14 1","pages":"123 - 139"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2020-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/19357397.2020.1774261","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46624146","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study examined potential gender and sport-type differences (team versus individual) in the strength of the relationship between sport burnout and depression. Participants were 422 intercollegiate athletes from 19 sports. Participants completed burnout and depression surveys as well as a depressive symptom checklist. There were moderate to strong positive correlations between burnout symptoms and depression and there were significant regression models for both genders and sport types. Some gender and sport-type differences emerged. Additionally, 47% of participants who reported previously experiencing burnout also reported five or more concurrent depressive symptoms. Based on the results, sport burnout should be considered a serious mental health concern. Results are discussed in terms of screening and treatment for athlete subgroups and the conceptualization of burnout as a psychological construct.","PeriodicalId":56347,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of Sports and Athletes in Education","volume":"14 1","pages":"100 - 122"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2020-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/19357397.2020.1768036","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41403699","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Though greater engagement is found in varsity athletics, there is a need to examine whether the additional time and resources invested are maximizing student outcomes. Therefore, the current study sought to compare the perceived social, intellectual, and fitness benefits associated with varsity athletic and club sport participation at a large university in the United States. A multivariate analysis of variance demonstrated significantly greater perceived intellectual and fitness benefits associated with participation in varsity athletics in comparison to club sport, with a non-significant difference in perceived social benefits associated with participation in varsity and club sport programs. These findings support the return on investment in varsity athletics; however, invite reconsideration of institutional resource allocation given the comparable student outcomes associated with club sport.","PeriodicalId":56347,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of Sports and Athletes in Education","volume":"14 1","pages":"41 - 57"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2020-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/19357397.2020.1736486","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42881349","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study focused specifically on elite UK student-athletes’ motivations for migrating to the US and their perceptions of the transition on their athletic development. A qualitative research method was used to facilitate the development of this relatively new area. Three primary reasons for migration were identified: (1) the appealing nature of the recruitment process; (2) US university environment: conducive to athletic development; (3) idealistic expectations of US university experience. Five predominant influencing factors of their athletic development in the US were also identified: (1) nature of the coach-athlete relationship; (2) training demands; (3) exposure to high-level competition; (4) representing the university; (5) perception of sport as their job. Due to this study’s emphasis on sport, the researchers identified two new concepts: multifaceted perceptions of athletic development and positive reframing.","PeriodicalId":56347,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of Sports and Athletes in Education","volume":"14 1","pages":"19 - 40"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2020-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/19357397.2020.1736487","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43563797","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Athletic directors represent a unique opportunity to foster environments of leadership development in high schools. The purpose of the current study was to examine high school athletic directors’ approaches to leadership development, and discuss the practical application of leadership programming. Interviews with nine athletic directors supported the value of sport as context for learning life skills, including leadership. Leadership development strategies included captain roundtables, provision of resources, and connecting networks of coaches. Differences existed across schools in leadership development prioritization and programming, indicating a lack of standardized programming between schools. The authors concluded that leadership is an essential component of high school athletics, and that it is pivotal to improve the delivery of leadership training through athletic directors. Further research on the topic is required to clarify best practice principles, and to evaluate athletic director programming.","PeriodicalId":56347,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of Sports and Athletes in Education","volume":"14 1","pages":"58 - 81"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2020-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/19357397.2020.1736485","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47088126","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Past research has revealed concerns that student-athletes may lack practical work experiences given the time invested in their sports. Thus, the purpose of this study is to determine what services are currently available to assist student-athletes in obtaining an internship and/or practicum, and the subsequent challenges that arise in getting student-athletes to utilize those services. Our findings show that student-athlete support service programming has advanced (e.g. job shadowing, mini-internships, student-athlete specific networking events, etc.) in efforts to provide creative and diverse experiential learning opportunities to student-athletes. Furthermore, our conversations highlighted the challenges student-athlete support service professionals encounter when working with student-athletes, coaches, and athletic administrators.","PeriodicalId":56347,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of Sports and Athletes in Education","volume":"15 1","pages":"71 - 94"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2019-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/19357397.2019.1669367","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41388280","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Fifteen NCAA Division I head coaches (11 men; 4 women) participated in semi-structured interviews. Coaches came from team sports consisting of men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, softball and baseball. The most consistently cited themes included: (a) establishing a coach–athlete relationship, mentioned by all 15 coaches, (b) establishing and enforcing a culture, addressed by 12 coaches, and (c) pressure activities and training, which was cited by 12 coaches. Additional strategies included using resources, mental skills training, using data, recruiting and use of classroom time. These findings broaden what is known in terms of mental toughness development by coaches at the collegiate level. Future work is needed on the effectiveness of such strategies as being most helpful to team sport athletes in collegiate settings.","PeriodicalId":56347,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of Sports and Athletes in Education","volume":"13 1","pages":"235 - 252"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2019-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/19357397.2019.1669366","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46209650","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
