The inability may be caused by many factors such as the complexity of the text itself, the texts in the textbook which are often not representative enough to be the model texts, and teachers’ lack of awareness of teaching genre. This study intends to investigate the gaps between the model (expert) and students’ texts at genre level and register level based on SFL perspectives. To serve the aims, this study employed case study design in attempt to get clear description from the case investigated. The data gathered from the analysis focusing on genre level and register level were presented in narrative form and interpreted descriptively. The finding showed that at genre level the student’s text did not include the restatement of thesis which is different from the expert’s text. Meanwhile, at register level, the student’s text appears to have lack of cohesive devices and other mode choices (e.g. lack of marked theme, connectives) which lead into the lack of texture of the text. Careful design of activities in each curriculum cycle and explicit teaching of both schematic structures and registers of expository are the implications suggested by this study.","PeriodicalId":56238,"journal":{"name":"JEELS Journal of English Education and Linguistics Studies","volume":"34 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82747539","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research was conducted in four stages, namely planning, implementation, observation and reflection, and was carried out in two cycles. The research subjects were 4 science teachers and 4 social studies teachers in my school, namely SMAN 1 Puloampel, Serang district, Banten province. The components of the innovative RPP assessment consist of formulating indicators, formulating learning steps (KBM), allocating time, determining learning resources, formulating teaching methods, and formulating assessments while the innovations that are expected in making the RPP are RPPs that can produce, combine, have added value, something new and answers problems and is integrated with Strengthening Character Education (PPK), oriented to HOTS or improving students' higher thinking skills and having 21st-century skills. In the first cycle, the researcher observed an increase in teacher competence in making innovative lesson plans. The results of observations of individual RPP assessments in the first cycle showed an average value of 68.4%. In the second cycle, the teacher's average value increased in making lesson plans, which was 77.6%. While the classical lesson plan completeness assessment from cycle I and cycle II showed a good average value of 73%. This proves that academic supervision can improve the ability of teachers in preparing innovative RPP (Learning Implementation Plans).","PeriodicalId":56238,"journal":{"name":"JEELS Journal of English Education and Linguistics Studies","volume":"43 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-05-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78198228","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Grounded from identity and investment frameworks (Norton, 2000) and situated learning theory (Lave & Wenger, 1991), the study specifically probes into the changing identity construction across time shaped by the participant’s involvement in the community of practice. Data analysis followed Polkinghorne’s (1995) categorical procedure and Connelly and Clandinin’s (2006) three-dimensional space of narrative inquiry. The findings portray gradual and complex identity construction mediated by the participant’s agentive classroom participation. It was also found that the participant’s identity evolved across time together with a movement from peripheral to full participation. This study informs that L2 learning is dependent on social, emotional, cultural, and situated practices depicted in L2 learner’s classroom participation. It also highlights the need for incorporating narrative inquiry to understand multiple, subjective, and conflicting values in L2 learning and other educational contexts. Using a single case study with embedded design and multiple data sources (observations, interviews, and document analysis), this research found that in its effort to help pre-service teachers’ identity development, the reflection class followed a certain procedure that comprises of two phases (i.e. reflection phase and publication preparation phase). In addition, this research also found some protocols that were adhered by the reflection class (i.e. involving social reflection, providing a safe and secure learning environment, feedback provision to the reflections, and giving appropriate prompts). This research recommends the teacher education and teacher professional development programs give more attention to how reflection is conducted. In particular, it is suggested that some protocols of conducting a good reflection are considered so that the pre-service teachers can make the most of the reflective activities.","PeriodicalId":56238,"journal":{"name":"JEELS Journal of English Education and Linguistics Studies","volume":"454 1","pages":"119-145"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-05-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76768032","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
