It presents with a characteristic facial phenotype and cognitive and behavioral disfunctions, which may include learning difficulties or mild intellectual disability. In the linguistic phenotype, different deviations can be observed, including pragmatic difficulties. The aim of this study was to assess <em>on-line</em> the microstructure and macrostructure of narratives in children with NS, and to analyze the relationships between narrative structure and language and intelligence test scores.</div></div><div><h3>Materials and methods</h3><div>11 children with NS (6-11 years old) and their typically developing peers participated. Linguistic and non-verbal intelligence tests were adapted <em>on-line</em>, narratives were elicited from a silent tv cartoon, and they were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed with the tools of the CHILDES Project and the Pragmatic Evaluation Protocol for Corpora (PREP-CORP).</div></div><div><h3>Results</h3><div>The feasibility of <em>on-line</em> assessment for eliciting narratives and administering standardized tests was established. Children with NS produced poorer narratives, less extensive and complex in their microstructure, and more limited at all levels of the macrostructure. Bilingualism has been proposed as one such protective factor. This study aimed to examine the impact of second language (L2) usage frequency on executive functions, specifically working memory, in older adults.</div></div><div><h3>Materials and methods</h3><div>The sample consists of 45 individuals over the age of 65, residing in Catalonia, whose first language is Spanish and whose second language (L2) is Catalan, acquired after the age of 6. A non-probabilistic sampling method was employed. In typical development there may be slight articulatory imprecision. Studies on this subject are limited, and the development of AP remains unclear. We aimed to investigate whether there is an association between the hardness of the foods consumed and the development of AP.</div></div><div><h3>Materials and methods</h3><div>This study examined the relationship between the introduction of solid foods, masticatory ability (MA) for hard solids and beef, avoidant behaviors toward hard foods, and AP. Forty-two typically developing Spanish-speaking children, aged between 6<!--> <!-->and 8<!--> <!-->years, participated. Family interviews were conducted to gather information about the participants’ food history and behaviors related to food hardness, and AP was assessed perceptually.</div></div><div><h3>Results</h3><div>Significant associations were found between food history, masticatory skills, and avoidant behaviors related to food hardness. A significant relationship was also observed between the introduction of food and MA for beef with AP. No significant associations were found between MA for hard solids, avoidant behaviors, and AP.</div></div><div><h3>Conclusions</h3><div>Participants with delayed food introduction present poorer MA and greater rejection of hard foods. The results suggest an association between MA when chewing meat and AP, that is, individuals with lower ability to chew meat show poorer PA. Longitudinal studies show that those children who present deficiencies in verbal and non-verbal linguistic skills are at greater risk of having unfavorable outcomes in adult life. Within this framework, grammatical complexity constitutes a key element in this process, since it implies not only a structural domain of the system, but also a functional one.</div></div><div><h3>Objective</h3><div>To analyze linguistic complexity through conceptual subordination and its forms of coding in the oral production of Spanish-speaking children with typical development (TD) and ASD.</div></div><div><h3>Method</h3><div>Cross-sectional mixed approach study with descriptive, non-experimental design. The sample was made up of 19 who attended regular educational establishments with a school integration program: TD group (n<!--> <!-->=<!--> <!-->11), ASD group (n<!--> <!-->=<!--> <!-->8). The measurement was conducted through the Subordinate Clause Production Test.</div></div><div><h3>Results</h3><div>The results allow us to conclude that there are no significant differences in the production of conceptual subordination and in the forms of coding between both groups. Although there is evidence of its effectiveness in school settings, there is a lack of information about the communicative benefits and access to speech at home.</div></div><div><h3>Objective</h3><div>Determine the benefits of using a remote microphone at home in the child and adolescent population.</div></div><div><h3>Method</h3><div>A panoramic review was carried out in EBSCO, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases, using specific search terms. Of the 77 articles found, 5 met the inclusion criteria.</div></div><div><h3>Results</h3><div>Improvements in receptive speech and a 42% loss of acoustic information were found when not using the device at home. The inclusion criteria were full-text journal articles or doctoral theses exploring the use of various body-mind methods and interventions designed to optimize vocal quality. The exclusion criteria involved articles exploring the relation posture-voice, interventions based exclusively on breathing exercises, voice pathologies, methods to treat stage fright, speaking voice, or opinion articles on the benefits of body-mind methods in the singing voice without any intervention or research instrument involved. Twelve papers met the inclusion criteria. Results show that body-mind methods appear to have a positive effect on reducing tension and balancing the body, and thus enhancing singing. However, most of the studies do not have significant results. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) play a crucial role in this process, assessing not only the severity of dysphagia and the underlying pathology but also bioethical and psychosocial factors. Previous studies have indicated that this decision is not based solely on clinical criteria but integrates multiple dimensions. This study aims to explore the clinical, bioethical, and psychosocial perceptions of SLPs regarding decision-making in the indication of PEG in individuals with neurodegenerative diseases.</div></div><div><h3>Patients or materials and methods</h3><div>A qualitative study was conducted using semi-structured interviews with 10<!--> <!-->SLPs experienced in managing dysphagia in neurodegenerative diseases. Content analysis was applied to identify emerging patterns in decision-making, categorizing findings into five key dimensions: diagnostic and prognostic considerations, clinical swallowing assessment, social and healthcare context, decision-making process, and the role of the SLP in the indication of PEG.</div></div><div><h3>Results</h3><div>Decision-making regarding PEG is not solely dependent on clinical assessment but also considers the individual's autonomy, advance directives, perceived quality of life, and socio-family context. Ethical dilemmas related to disease progression and family involvement were identified. Additionally, SLPs emphasized the need for greater training in bioethics and communication to effectively address these challenges.</div></div><div><h3>Conclusions</h3><div>This study highlights the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to PEG indication, balancing clinical, ethical, and psychosocial factors. They need augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) in the form of manual signs or communication aids with graphic symbols to supplement or substitute for limited or no intelligible speech and achieve an optimal language development; for them the role of AAC is to complement or fill the functions of speech. The aim of this paper is to discuss AAC as an atypical form of language development, the elements and processes involved in development of AAC, and the importance of learning from observing the untaught strategies children apply in everyday use of AAC.</div></div><div><h3>Materials and methods</h3><div>Recent literature was examined and reflections based on the author's own AAC expertise were made to analyze the state of the art regarding AAC as an atypical form of language development. In recent years, myofunctional exercises have emerged as a promising alternative for its treatment. This study reviewed clinical trials published between 2006 and 2023 to evaluate their effectiveness in adults with OSA. Out of 1,217 analyzed articles, six met the inclusion criteria. Participants ranged from 19 to 85 years old, and diagnostic methods included polysomnography, the apnea-hypopnea index, the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, BMI, and neck circumference. The results showed that speech therapy significantly reduces OSA severity, improving the apnea hypopnea index, neck circumference, and daytime symptoms, with a reference p-value (<.05).
