The mathematical concept of the complexity of a sequence is defined as the number of distinct subsequences of it. Sequences containing many common parts have a higher joint complexity. The analysis of a sequence in subcomponents is done by suffix trees, which is a simple, fast, and low complexity method to store and recall them from the memory, especially for short sequences. Joint complexity is used for evaluating the similarity between sequences generated by different Markov sources. Markov models well describe the generation of natural text, and their performance can be predicted via linear algebra, combinatorics, and asymptotic analysis. We exploit datasets from different natural languages, for both short and long sequences, with very promising results. The goal is to perform automated online sequence analysis on information streams, e.g., on social networks such as Twitter. © 2014 Alcatel-Lucent.
","PeriodicalId":55592,"journal":{"name":"Bell Labs Technical Journal","volume":"18 4","pages":"75-88"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-02-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1002/bltj.21647","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"51439382","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, we still lack analytics methods that can translate this information into a comprehensive and ever-evolving representation of the user experience. In this paper, we provide a layered dynamic model that addresses the problem of how to relate low-level network performance metrics to a user's perception of network service and their subsequent actions. Using time-stamped observations from networks, devices, and customer care, we build probabilistic models to link network performance to an inferred state of customer satisfaction, and then to explicit and implicit customer disengagement events. We provide inference algorithms for the model parameters, and report test results on synthesized datasets based on real, but incomplete, observations. We discuss how popular anonymization techniques such as data masking, encryption, k-anonymization, and differential privacy can be used to protect sensitive and private user data without impacting the user experience inference. © 2014 Alcatel-Lucent.
","PeriodicalId":55592,"journal":{"name":"Bell Labs Technical Journal","volume":"18 4","pages":"19-32"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-02-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1002/bltj.21643","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"50224832","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Existing computational paradigms such as MapReduce (and its popular open-source implementation Hadoop) provide a scalable, fault tolerant mechanism for large scale batch computations. However, many applications in the telco ecosystem require a real time, incremental streaming approach to process data in real time and enable proactive care. Storm is a scalable, fault tolerant framework for the analysis of real time streaming data. In this paper we provide a motivation for the use of real time streaming analytics in the telco ecosystem. We perform an experimental investigation into the performance of Storm, focusing in particular on the impact of parameter configuration. This investigation reveals that optimal parameter choice is highly non-trivial and we use this as motivation to create a parameter configuration engine. As first steps towards the creation of this engine we provide a deep analysis of the inner workings of Storm and provide a set of models describing data flow cost, central processing unit (CPU) cost, and system management cost. © 2014 Alcatel-Lucent.
","PeriodicalId":55592,"journal":{"name":"Bell Labs Technical Journal","volume":"18 4","pages":"181-197"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-02-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1002/bltj.21652","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"51439761","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While there are numerous similarities between enterprise and public online social networks such as Facebook or Twitter, there are also important differences, many of which are driven by the inherent organizational structure of an enterprise, that make ESNs an important area to study in their own right. This paper describes the ESN applications that have been used within Alcatel-Lucent over the past several years, focusing on the most recent. We discuss the tools and methodologies utilized to gain access to Alcatel-Lucent's ESN usage data and to perform various types of analyses and visualizations of that data. We provide some statistics about ESN usage within the company and give insights into some of the questions that ESN tools can help to answer, such as the degree to which ESN applications break down geographic and/or organizational boundaries. Our analyses show that employees in the middle levels of the company hierarchy tend to use ESN the most, and that there is a considerable amount of inter-country communication occurring. © 2014 Alcatel-Lucent.
","PeriodicalId":55592,"journal":{"name":"Bell Labs Technical Journal","volume":"18 4","pages":"89-109"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-02-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1002/bltj.21648","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"51438988","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These networks are constantly being improved to provide new functionality, improved capacity, and better reliability. Optimization, testing, and troubleshooting of these systems are all important areas of concern within the cellular network industry. Large amounts of engineering resources are devoted to these topics, with the result that analysis techniques and best practices are constantly being improved. This paper details recent work regarding the analysis of cellular data device behavior in a live system, and the design of a high performance load generator to simulate this behavior for use in system testing and debugging. Internet Protocol (IP) packet capture data is analyzed using a simple graph-based analysis technique that provides a detailed characterization of device behavior. This paper will present a QoE model for video delivered over a radio network (e.g., Long Term Evolution (LTE)) using HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) adaptive streaming (HAS). The model is based on experiments performed in the context of the Next Generation Mobile Networks (NGMN) project P-SERQU (Project Service Quality Definition and Measurement). In the first phase, a set of representative HAS profiles were selected based on a lab experiment where scenarios with typical radio impairments (fading, signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio, round trip time and competing traffic) were investigated in a test network. Based on these HAS profiles, video files were prepared by concatenating chunks of the corresponding video quality. In a second phase, these video files were downloaded, viewed, and rated by a large number of volunteers. Based on these user scores a mean opinion score (MOS) was determined for each of the video files, and hence, the HAS profiles. Several QoE models that predict the MOS from the HAS profile have been analyzed. Using the preferred QoE model, a range of MOS values can be obtained for each set of initial radio impairments. It is argued that a QoE model based on the radio parameters is necessarily less accurate than a QoE model based on HAS profiles and an indication is given of how much the performance of the former is less than the latter. © 2014 Alcatel-Lucent.
","PeriodicalId":55592,"journal":{"name":"Bell Labs Technical Journal","volume":"18 4","pages":"45-62"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-02-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1002/bltj.21645","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"50424323","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Solving this dilemma is a challenge because generating collaborative filtering recommendations requires access to the set of all user profiles in order to identify similar ones, and to compute the top-rated items. The privacy-preserving personalization (P3) paradigm builds on the idea of using locality-sensitive hashing (LSH) to find groups of similar users, while keeping their profiles local. In this work, we analyze the behavior of the adapted LSH algorithm from the perspective of the quality of final recommendations and the distribution of cluster sizes. We investigate the impact of different LSH parameter configurations on the basis of the MovieLens dataset, and empirically show a small, non-prohibitive cost ofprivacy protection on the recommendations' quality. © 2014 Alcatel-Lucent.
","PeriodicalId":55592,"journal":{"name":"Bell Labs Technical Journal","volume":"18 4","pages":"33-44"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-02-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1002/bltj.21644","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"50424324","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
