{"title":"Supporting Self-Regulated Learning and Reducing Attrition: Outcomes of a Junior-Year Bridge Program in a Baccalaureate Nursing Program.","authors":"Margaret Avallone, Thomas Dahan, Samantha Tucker","doi":"10.1097/NNE.0000000000001997","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1097/NNE.0000000000001997","url":null,"abstract":"<p><strong>Background: </strong>High attrition rates in Health and Illness (HI) and Pharmacology (PH) led educators in 1 baccalaureate nursing program to develop a mid-curricular summer bridge program.</p><p><strong>Purpose: </strong>The study's purpose was to determine effectiveness of a junior bridge program on the development of self-regulated learning (SRL) strategies and reduction of attrition.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>A bridge program was offered to rising BSN junior students with SRL strategies applied to short lectures.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>Forty-four percent of eligible students participated from 2022 to 2024. Attrition rates were lower for bridge participants (n = 164) compared to nonparticipants (n = 211) in both HI (8.99% vs 16.5%, z = 2.18, P = .029) and PH (15.7% vs 19.8%, z = 1.03, P = .305). {"title":"Exposure to Violence and Therapeutic Communication in Nursing Students: A Cross-Sectional Study.","authors":"Ahmet Erol, Metin Tuncer","doi":"10.1097/NNE.0000000000002005","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1097/NNE.0000000000002005","url":null,"abstract":"<p><strong>Background: </strong>Workplace violence negatively affects the professional development of nursing students.</p><p><strong>Objectives: </strong>To investigate nursing students' exposure to violence, violence-management competence, and therapeutic communication during clinical practice.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>A descriptive, cross-sectional, correlational study involves 530 nursing students. Data were collected between September 2024 and February 2025 using a Sociodemographic Form, the Workplace Violence Competence Scale, and the Therapeutic Communication Skills Scale.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>Violence was reported by 32.8% of students, mainly verbal (60.9%) and psychological (47.1%), often by patients or relatives. Communication skills correlated positively with violence management competence, explaining 18.1% of the variance. The outcome was evaluated using Brookfield's critical incident questionnaire, which assessed student perceptions following participation in the activity.</p><p><strong>Outcomes: </strong>Eighty-two undergraduate nursing students completed the questionnaire at the end of the activity. {"title":"Strengthening Preceptor Skills: An Evidence-Based Approach for Mitigating Discriminatory Behavior in Clinical Learning Environments.","authors":"Nicole D Gleason, Amalia E Gedney-Lose","doi":"10.1097/NNE.0000000000002004","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1097/NNE.0000000000002004","url":null,"abstract":"<p><strong>Background: </strong>Nurse practitioner (NP) students frequently encounter mistreatment in clinical environments, yet many supervising preceptors lack training to effectively address it.</p><p><strong>Purpose: </strong>The aims of this evidence-based practice project were to improve preceptor knowledge, perceptions, and behaviors related to fostering culturally aware learning environments, mitigating discriminatory behavior, and role modeling inclusive care.</p><p><strong>Approach: </strong>Guided by the Expect, Recognize, Address, Support, Establish/Encourage (ERASE) framework, a stepwise approach to address mistreatment, a self-paced, multimodal online learning module was developed and implemented.</p><p><strong>Outcomes: </strong>Preceptors demonstrated improvements in self-reported preparedness to recognize and respond to bias and discriminatory behaviors in the clinical setting using the ERASE framework.
