Firstly, it aims to show that the existing models for textual humour studies must be adapted in order to be used for the analysis of poetic texts, specifically for poems in which the use of rhetorical devices plays a central role. Secondly, it seeks to demonstrate that an analysis based on insights from textual humour studies can enrich a reading of humorous poetry. By combining and expanding contemporary incongruity- resolution theories of lingual humour, I introduce a methodology, which I then use to analyse the role of humour in the poems “Niet aardig” (“Not witty”) by P.A. de Génestet and “Immortelle LXXXIV” by François HaverSchmidt. This article explores this interplay in one such revenge tragedy, Geeraardt Brandt’s early modern Dutch The Feigning Torquatus (De Veinzende Torquatus, 1645), through a study of the mythological subtext. The character Juliane, who is raped on stage and later avenges herself on her rapist, is connected textually and subtextually to the mythological topoi of Lucretia and the vengeful woman. I argue that these topoi elevate Juliane’s revenge from private revenge to public justice, and finally to divine retribution. It took until the late 1950s to gain the necessary support for this cause. In the process, different views on the concrete realization of this project emerged. Because of the many voices within this debate, which also broadened to a national scale, more rational formulas had to make way for a compromising solution. Instead of creating one university, three incomplete university institutions were established between 1965 and 1971: RUCA (a state institution), UFSIA (a catholic, private institution), and UIA (a pluralistic foundation). Ceux-ci explicitent ou, au contraire, cachent les processus de transferts (de traduction, d’adaptation, etc.) dans leur tentative de construire une identité nationale et littéraire dans cette aire culturelle que l’on pourrait définir comme hybride et multilingue. En étudiant et en mettant en regard des journaux de la période autrichienne et de la période dite hollandaise, nous essayerons de dégager les lignes de forces qui régissent ce champ littéraire proto-belge. Tegen deze achtergrond heeft de huidige pilootstudie als doeleinden (1) te beschrijven hoe specifieke motion events uitgedrukt worden door Franstalige moedertaalsprekers, Nederlandstalige moedertaalsprekers en Franstalige leerders van het Nederlands om hypotheses te formuleren voor verder onderzoek en (2) een methode te testen. Er werd een experiment uitgevoerd waarin er aan de deelnemers werd gevraagd scènes uit een aflevering van de animatieserie Tweety & Sylvester te beschrijven. Hun talige producties en hun gebaren werden dan geanalyseerd. Deze preliminaire resultaten geven een overzicht van de manier waarop de FR1-, NL1- en NL2-sprekers de aspecten manier en pad coderen en combineren in hun spraak en gebaren. The main objective is hereby to explore the main characteristics of this socioeconomic source material, and how it has been used in historical studies of premodern Flanders. Furthermore, the possibilities and methodologies for future research based on seigneurial financial administrative documents are covered as well. Somers","doi":"10.21825/kzm.87034","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.21825/kzm.87034","url":null,"abstract":"Several studies have drawn attention to the fact that subjecthood is not necessarily associated with nominative case-marking (Andrews 1976, Þráinsson 1979, Zaenen, Maling & Þráinsson 1985, Sigurðsson 1989, inter alia).1 This article seeks to contribute to the study of non-canonically case marked subjects by zooming in on nominative-dative verbs in Present-Day with a subject-like oblique argument (henceforth: impersonal dative-nominative verbs). The aim of this article is twofold. First, I present an exhaustive list of all German impersonal dative-nominative verbs, and secondly, I aim to classify them according to the semantic typology suggested by Barðdal et al. (2016). Yet little scholarly attention has been paid to this epistemological aspect of their work. This article therefore addresses how their poetry deals with knowledge and which strategies are used to this end. First, the relationship between knowledge and poetry is explored. Building on examples from Carson’s Glass and God (1998) and Hirs’s oneindige zin (2021), amongst other works, the article then examines what kind of engagement with knowledge such forms of poetry engender and in what ways. Finally, the comparative analysis suggests that an erotic epistemology, focused on a desire for knowledge, lies at the heart of Hirs’s and Carson’s poetry.
