Ouderdom in de laat Latijnse Elegieën van Maximianus (6e eeuw n.Chr.)","authors":"Nina Van der Sype","doi":"10.21825/kzm.87040","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.21825/kzm.87040","url":null,"abstract":"This article focuses on the poetry of Maximianus, a late Latin author whose work was published around the 6th century AD. His corpus is to be situated within the genre of the elegy; typically, these are written by a young and virile male poet, dedicated to the woman he loves and who dominates his life. However, the six elegies written by Maximianus (686 lines in total) are unique within the whole of Latin literature since they do not have love and youth as central subject. They explicitly put the motif of old age on the foreground. By combining a close reading with the methodological framework of “ageing studies”, this article proposes an analysis of some crucial passages taken from the opening poem of the corpus, in order to show how Maximianus interacts with the topic of old age within the boundaries of the elegy.","PeriodicalId":53996,"journal":{"name":"TIJDSCHRIFT VOOR NEDERLANDSE TAAL-EN LETTERKUNDE","volume":"563 ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2021-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72505012","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sketching existing blind spots and the current difficulties to transgress the disciplinary boundaries between political history and the history of consumption, the article proposes a new approach and methodology for reconstructing how political debates have shaped commercial parlour at the dawn of the modern era. By breaking with linear presumptions that consumption became dissociated from politics in the nineteenth century and exploring the neglected role of the political in framing French consumer society, the research agenda outlined in this review article seeks to contribute to a more comprehensive historical understanding of crucial processes of modernization and commercialization.","PeriodicalId":53996,"journal":{"name":"TIJDSCHRIFT VOOR NEDERLANDSE TAAL-EN LETTERKUNDE","volume":"16 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2021-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81780193","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This involuntary emigration to Greece caused the near-extinction of this dialect. Nowadays the number of Cappadocian speakers and semi-speakers has decreased to approximately 2,800. Fortunately this very remarkable dialect, which was thoroughly influenced by the Turkish language, has been captured in many orally transmitted folktales that were recorded by philologists and dialectologists from the nineteenth century onwards. This paper presents a critical edition of a hitherto unpublished folktale: ‘The Shepherd’, a very short story in the Cappadocian subdialect of the village of Axo, recorded by Richard M. Dawkins. The edition is followed by a Dutch translation of ‘The Shepherd’ and a folkloristic discussion on its origin. This folktale is most likely one of the numerous versions of the story about the one-eyed giant, the Cyclops, best known from its variant in Homer’s Odyssey.","PeriodicalId":53996,"journal":{"name":"TIJDSCHRIFT VOOR NEDERLANDSE TAAL-EN LETTERKUNDE","volume":"24 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2021-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78763484","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Clusteranalyse als antwoord op het quasi-synonymie vraagstuk","authors":"Sven Van Hulle, Renata Enghels","doi":"10.21825/kzm.87036","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.21825/kzm.87036","url":null,"abstract":"This study about the productivity and the near-synonymy of the inchoative construction in Peninsular Spanish reveals that at least 25 verbs can enter the auxiliary slot. These auxiliaries are recruited from six semantic domains: (1) superlexical inherent inchoative verbs, (2) put verbs, (3) throw verbs, (4) movement verbs, (5) manual manipulation verbs and (6) verbs of destruction. This study confirms that a hierarchical cluster analysis is suited to investigate the near-synonymy of semantically related verbs as it unfolds interesting clusters for the inchoative auxiliaries. Concretely, the hierarchical cluster analysis divides the auxiliaries into three clusters. A first one with the superlexical auxiliaries (comenzar, empezar and iniciar), a second cluster with the put verbs (meter and poner) and a third cluster with the less grammaticalized and more lexicalized auxiliaries echarse and romper.","PeriodicalId":53996,"journal":{"name":"TIJDSCHRIFT VOOR NEDERLANDSE TAAL-EN LETTERKUNDE","volume":"15 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2021-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75991554","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
