During the civil war on the Don, in the conservative Cossack region, in the cities of Rostov-on-Don and Taganrog, women played an important role in the Bolshevik underground and in the organization of Soviet intelligence. Methods and materials. The historiography of this problem is extremely insignificant. In the article, the task was set to find out the reasons for such a feature, relying on a fairly large selection of memoirs and documents and using comparative and anthropological research methods. Analysis. It was found out that many women during the civil war resolutely joined the ranks of one of the opposing sides and sometimes, on their own initiative, fought with special “female methods.” The underground Don committee created by the Bolsheviks consisted of 4 men and 5 women. The women who led the underground were transferred to the Don across the front line. Local women who were part of the underground were used as couriers to cross the front line with intelligence data. The leaders turned out to be good organizers. For the sake of obtaining information, the underground women could enter into close relations with the enemy representatives they were interested in, use their “charms” to lure and destroy white officers, and ruthlessly, without proceedings, destroy in their midst someone who was suspected of treason. Results. It was impossible to organize an intelligence network in Cossack villages, where the majority of the population supported whites, and the Bolsheviks relied on cities with large Ukrainian, Jewish, and Greek populations. The contemptuous attitude of the enemy towards women inherent in traditional society was taken into account. The women selected for underground work were distinguished by promiscuity and ruthlessness. Authors’ contributions. The material on the situation on the Don was prepared by A.V. Venkov. The material on the principles of the organization of intelligence and counterintelligence and the involvement of women in this work was prepared by H.B. Mamsirov.","PeriodicalId":515910,"journal":{"name":"Vestnik Volgogradskogo gosudarstvennogo universiteta. Serija 4. Istorija. Regionovedenie. The article considers the evolution of the concept of “pacifism” in Soviet sociopolitical thought. The stages in the assessments of pacifism by the Soviet social scientists regarding the peculiarities of the historical development of our country are distinguished. Methods and materials. The historiography of the considered problem is rather limited, as a comprehensive study of assessments of pacifism (in the ideological and terminological dimensions) in Soviet socio-political thought has not been conducted. The source base of the study was, first, scientific works, reference encyclopedic editions, and journalistic materials. The following methods and techniques were used in the work: historical-comparative, semantic-cognitive, and historical-semantic. Analysis. According to the author, in the pre-revolutionary period, pacifism was considered a rather integral ideology that had a moderate character and was focused on liberal values. A great influence on the perception of pacifism by representatives of Soviet socio-political thought was provided by the ideological preferences of Bolshevik theorists and, above all, by Lenin’s works, which contained a serious criticism of pacifism as a doctrine alien and hostile to Marxism. Results. Throughout almost the entire Soviet period, one could observe in social and political thought a negative attitude towards pacifism, a careful and conscious non-use of it, as well as its replacement by ideologically more appropriate concepts (“struggle for peace”). A complete reevaluation and intellectual “rehabilitation” of pacifism took place at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s, when, with the ideological pressure coming to an end, the term “pacifism” entered firmly into public and political discourse, including the research discourse.","PeriodicalId":515910,"journal":{"name":"Vestnik Volgogradskogo gosudarstvennogo universiteta. The article reveals the vectors of rethinking the strategy and mechanisms for ensuring the security of modern Russia as a state-civilization in the conditions of turbulence in the existing system of international relations in the 21st century. Attention is focused on the transformation in the understanding of the basic characteristics of the state and the maintenance of war and peace in the context of the increasing conflict potential of countries of Western and non-Western civilizations. The relevance of the study is determined by the theoretical and practical demand for identifying the dominant factors contributing to or minimizing the parameters of inter-civilizational confrontation (including the armed one). Methods and materials. The authors use various versions of the civilizational approach, which allow them to interpret the functional specifics of Russia as a statecivilization, including when analyzing real and potential risks and threats. In characterizing the current system of international relations, ideas expressed in the works of domestic and foreign scientists, including U. Beck, H. Kissinger, S. Huntington, M.M. Lebedeva, and others, are used. Conceptual approaches to understanding war and peace (C. Clausewitz, K. Lorenz, V.K. Belozerov, and A.I. Podberezkin) form the basis of the authors’ interpretation of the reasons, nature, and goals of military confrontation in the current century, the value perception of the world, and the prevention of armed conflicts. Analysis and results. The study interpreted the dominant conditions and factors that determine the strategy and methods of providing the security of Russian society and the state in the context of the aggravation of inter-civilizational confrontation in the 21st century. The main directions of transformation in understanding are identified and analyzed: the interrelation of war and peace; the goals, nature, types, etc. of armed and unarmed inter-civilizational confrontation; the values of the state of peace and security; and resources for their maintenance and reproduction. The relationship between the nature of modern armed conflicts and the priorities of ensuring the security of Russia as a state-civilization is traced. Authors’ contribution. S.A. Pankratov developed the theoretical and methodological basis of the study. S.I. Morozov analyzed the dominant trends in providing the security of Russia, interpreted data related to the transformation in the scientific discourse and public consciousness of the population of the country, and set goals for understanding war and peace. L.S. Pankratova identified the basic characteristics of Russia as a state-civilization and interpreted the dominant threats and risks in the conditions of modern inter-civilizational confrontation.","PeriodicalId":515910,"journal":{"name":"Vestnik Volgogradskogo gosudarstvennogo universiteta. The deterrence by Western democracies of key opponents, first of all Russia, includes the rapid and scaled increase of NATO’s power. The basis of the Alliance’s potential consists of a modernized and strengthened system of military groupings. Methods and materials. In some scientific papers, there was a perception of NATO as more inertial than the EU. But the contemporary evolution of the Alliance is rather dynamic. The goal of the article is to explore the transformation of conventional NATO’s groupings using the theory of armed forces building. The author explores the conceptual level of NATO’s development, but key attention is paid to the practical one. Analysis and results. The elder system of NATO’s military groupings during the former Cold War had as the key element the 1st strategic echelon of troops with its, in fact, unadvanced multilateralism of forces. Since the 2000s, a new system of military groupings has been established. It consists of the Forward Presence Force as the vanguards of the more powerful NATO Response Force (NRF), which was the 2nd strategic echelon of troops. The article explores qualitative and quantitative changes in the military groupings in 2014–2023 in the context of confrontation with the Russian Federation, and the creation of the New NATO Force Model on the basis of NRF (since 2022). The system of NATO’s military groupings of the 21st century is organizationally an example of already advanced multilateralism. Conclusion. The evolution of NATO’s groupings has confirmed the role of the Alliance as an actor in the development of confrontations. The new system of military groupings, developed in 2014–2023, should be more powerful than the one during the former Cold War. The author stresses the regularity of the modernization of the conventional groupings of NATO.","PeriodicalId":515910,"journal":{"name":"Vestnik Volgogradskogo gosudarstvennogo universiteta. The key issue of this work is the relationship between the press, public opinion, and political institutions of Great Britain during the Crimean War (1853–1856). In this context, the political activity of the Sheffield radical John Arthur Roebuck (1802–1879) is considered. The relevance of the work is determined by the research thesis that, during the Crimean War, public opinion was no longer only broadcast by the press but was largely shaped by it. Methods. The broad research context of the article is provided by a critical method of processing sources, some of which (publications from the provincial newspapers Sheffield and Rotterham Independent and Iris), discovered in the Northamptonshire Record Office, are being introduced into scientific circulation for the first time. Analysis. The goal of this article is to clarify the thesis well-established in traditional historiography, according to which the influence of the press on the current political agenda became significant only in the late 1860s. The analysis done in the article shows that if in the mid-30s of the 19th century the press only broadcast the opinion of the political elite, then during the Crimean War it already had the most direct influence on the formation of British public opinion. Results. The result of the study was the thesis that by the end of the Crimean War, the British press was quite able to influence public opinion and, even under certain circumstances, determine it. However, it still had very limited influence when it came to measures affecting the prerogative powers of Parliament and the Cabinet. Authors’ contribution. V.V. Klochkov determined the basic concept of the article and the methodological foundations of the study, as well as identified unpublished sources from the regional archives of Great Britain. V.S. Nazarova prepared the introduction of the article, created its structural composition, and analyzed the historiography of the problem. I.M. Uznarodov conducted an analysis of the publications of periodicals and formulated the main results of the study.","PeriodicalId":515910,"journal":{"name":"Vestnik Volgogradskogo gosudarstvennogo universiteta. Handwritten collections of the 18th century, with historical content, provide rich material for a wide variety of studies of the Petrine era but remain insufficiently studied. Methods and materials. Among the narrative sources describing the history of the Russian fleet during the time of Peter the Great, a special place is occupied by the anonymous story entitled “The Glorious Northern War and the Life of Peter the Great.” The work is dated 1749 and, until recently, was known as a single list. The author of the article was able to discover a second list of anonymous histories. Analysis. Studying the text of this story made it possible to establish that it is a compilation, the main sources of which are “History of the Sveian War”, “Life of Peter the Great” by A. Katiforo, and “Discourse on the Causes of the Sveian War” by P.P. Shafirova. Moreover, the essay also contains the author’s text. Analysis of the author’s text allowed us to put forward the hypothesis that the author’s personality should be identified with a famous writer of the first half of the 18th century, P.N. Krekshin. Some of the stories contained in the history contain little-known details of extraordinary incidents in the Baltic Fleet during the Northern War. Result. The unknown history of P.N. Krekshin is given particular value by the fact that, in a number of cases, he was a direct witness to the administrative practice of Peter the Great’s time and sometimes even an executor of the orders of Tsar Peter. The article introduces for the first time into scientific circulation little-known and unknown data about the history of the Baltic Fleet during the time of Peter the Great.","PeriodicalId":515910,"journal":{"name":"Vestnik Volgogradskogo gosudarstvennogo universiteta. Methods and materials. Historical facts are investigated on the basis of the principles of historicism and objectivity. The article uses problem-chronological and comparative-historical methods. The article is based on documents of the NKVD-Ministry of Internal Affairs of the USSR, the Main Directorate for Prisoners of War and Internees of the NKVD-Ministry of Internal Affairs of the USSR, and institutions for prisoners of war and internees of the Stalingrad region. Analysis. Prisoners of war at Camp No. 362 were used in the work of the main construction trusts restoring industrial enterprises and housing facilities in the central and northern parts of Stalingrad. The number of the camp’s contingent for 1945–1947 increased from 7,943 people to 13,715 people, and the share of workers in production increased. Results. For 1945–1949, enterprises transferred more than 125 million rubles to the camp for the work of prisoners of war. The total cost of the work performed by the contingent of Camp No. 362 amounted to about 400 million rubles. This allowed approximately 4.5% to reimburse the cost of losses incurred by the city during the war years.","PeriodicalId":515910,"journal":{"name":"Vestnik Volgogradskogo gosudarstvennogo universiteta. Oregon in the early 19th century was a sparsely populated territory, but it had a favorable geographical position on the Pacific coast. It was a strategically important region, which, thanks to the Columbia River, provided a connection with the interior of the United States and the Pacific Ocean. Spain, Great Britain, and the USA fought for the right to possess this territory. In historiography the struggle for Oregon has received insufficient coverage in a number of aspects. Methods and materials. The methodology used in writing the article is based on the achievements of modern historical science. The study is based on sources obtained from domestic and foreign repositories. Domestic and foreign historiographies are involved. Classical methods of historical analysis, including prosopography and document correspondence, were used to process sources and literature. At the same time, when studying the literature and processing the entire complex of received materials, systematic and comparative approaches were involved. The study itself contains aspects of an interdisciplinary approach. Analysis. The article deals with the circumstances of the rivalry for Oregon from the turn of the 1830s to the 1840s. It may be viewed in the context of relations between the United States and Great Britain in regards to British North America. In order to gain a stronger foothold in Oregon, the Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC), in addition to the fur trade, engaged in a wider commerce through agriculture. The strengthening of this activity takes place simultaneously with the development of ties with the Russian-American Company (RAC). The circumstances of the preparation and implementation of this commercial activity between 1838 and 1842 are studied. The first full-scale American naval circumnavigation expedition was commanded by Captain Charles Wilkes (1798–1877). Results. It was in Oregon that the confrontation between the United States and England over the possession of new colonies intensified. Russia, which had colonial possessions in Alaska and the Aleutian Islands, pursued a pragmatic policy due to the wars of independence during the 1810s and 1820s. In Latin America, the formerly numerous and vast Spanish colonies became independent states. The formation of Mexico generally called into question any Spanish claim to the Northwest of America. This article continues a series of publications by the authors, which analyze the struggle of the leading European colonial powers for Oregon and the US West Coast. The Author’s contribution is the following: A.Yu. Petrov is in charge of finding new archival materials on the problem in the Russian State Navy Archives (RGA VMF) in Saint Petersburg, investigating all available literature on the subject, developing methods and providing a conclusion, and finding new facts on Russia’s involvement in the struggle for colonies in the Pacific Northwest. The evolving landscape of international relations has witnessed a profound transformation in the concept of security. Traditionally, governments held an exclusive monopoly over the provision of security, relying on their military and defense forces to safeguard their interests and protect their citizens. However, the post-Cold War era has ushered in a paradigm shift, with non-state actors emerging as formidable challengers to this traditional monopoly. At the forefront of these non-governmental actors stand private military and security companies (PMSCs), organizations that offer a diverse array of military and security services to governments across the globe. Methods and materials. This comprehensive study explores the multifaceted world of PMSCs, categorizing them into three distinct types based on the nature of the services they provide: offensive, reactive, and defensive. Through an analytical-descriptive research approach and the innovative lens of postinternational theory, this research delves deep into the role of PMSCs in an increasingly interconnected world. Analysis. The central question that underpins this study is the extent of PMSCs’ influence in a post-international world and their responses to the evolving global military security environment. It scrutinizes whether governments continue to maintain an exclusive monopoly over security and military operations or if these responsibilities have been increasingly assumed by non-governmental actors like PMSCs. Results. The study comes to the conclusion that in the post-international world, governments are no longer the sole arbiters of security, and the role of nonstate actors, particularly PMSCs, has grown substantially. Their extensive military and security services, often serving as alternatives to official national armies, have reduced the necessity for government forces in conflictprone regions. This paradigm shift has effectively transformed security into a “tradable commodity,” giving further initiative and importance to the PMSCs across the international arena. Autors’ contribution. Reza Javadi has outlined the scope, idea, purpose, and objectives of the paper. He has also been engaged in the gathering, classification, and analysis of the documents that make up the main source base of the article. The second author, M. The article examines the role and contribution of the senior commissioner of the special department and chief of intelligence of the partisans of the Crimean ASSR, Senior Lieutenant of the Navy of the Soviet Union Vasily Talyshev (1918–1996), to the organization of the partisan underground movement in the territory of Crimea during the Great Patriotic War. Methods and materials. The research is based on historicalbiographical, historical-chronological, and historical-comparative methods. The publication is based on unique previously unpublished sources introduced into scientific circulation for the first time: the funds of the Archival Department (municipal archive) of the Administration of the city of Alushta; the State Archive of the Republic of Crimea; the Archive of the city of Sevastopol; as well as materials of the periodical press of the Crimea. Analysis. In the fight against the Nazi invaders, the anti-fascists of Crimea faced a number of obstacles: German and Romanian troops, their intelligence structures, and relying on specially created auxiliary formations from local collaborators who actively opposed the Soviet patriots. In the person of V.P. Talyshev, the enemy special services met an experienced opponent who often anticipated their planned secret operations.
