Defined as an unpleasant sensitive and emotional experience associated with a real or potential tissue injury, or described in terms of that injury. It is a mechanism responsible for changing the physiological, behavioral and emotional and animal mechanisms, being extremely harmful to physical and mental well-being. Pain is classified as temporal (acute or chronic), pathological (nociceptive or neuropathic) and localization (somatic or visceral). Acute pain acts as a form of protection for the organism to prevent or minimize tissue damage, contributing to the animal's survival. Chronic pain is related to animal suffering, perpetuating for long periods. Nociceptive pain is part of the routine during consultations and is due to trauma and inflammatory processes. Neuropathic pain leads to sensory deficit. Nociceptors are responsible for nociception, this is the physiological component of pain that includes the processes of transduction, transmission, modulation and perception by a nociceptive stimulus. Pain scales are useful tools for identifying pain in horses and the assessment is made based on behavior and facial expressions. This review was prepared with the aim of presenting the pathophysiology and pain recognition in horses in the acute abdomen and in the post-operative period of castration through pain scales.","PeriodicalId":507127,"journal":{"name":"Pubvet","volume":" 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140689412","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Staphylococcal infections are often complicated by antibiotic resistance of the strains involved, which causes difficulties for animal therapy. Staphylococcus spp. Multiresistant isolates from humans and animals have been reported in recent decades and pose a challenge not only in human medicine but also in veterinary medicine. Resistance to Staphylococcus spp. in veterinary medicine is a complex and constantly evolving challenge. Awareness, vigilance, and the adoption of proactive measures are crucial to preserving the effectiveness of treatments, ensuring the long-term health and well-being of companion animals and contributing to mitigating the risks associated with antimicrobial resistance and public health. Addressing resistance to Staphylococcus spp. in veterinary medicine requires a comprehensive vision, integrating responsible clinical practices, continuous research and coordinated actions to preserve the effectiveness of treatments, guarantee animal and human health and promote a safer environment for all.","PeriodicalId":507127,"journal":{"name":"Pubvet","volume":" 15","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140689774","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The formation of methemoglobin is a normal metabolic process caused by the oxidation of hemoglobin (Hb), that is, the transformation of the iron present from its ferrous state (Fe2+) to the ferric state (Fe3+), thus preventing the binding of oxygen to Hb and consequently its transport besuntivo de SMF é considerado quando o paciente veterinário apresentar cianose e baixa saturação de oxigênio, confirmada pela co-oximetria de pulso e na ausência de doença cardiopulmonar; a investigação inicial como o spot teste e exames complementares podem auxiliar no diagnóstico; o tratamento básico da SMF consiste remoção precoce do agente causador, o uso de antídotos, oxigenioterapia e no controle dos sinais clínicos y red blood cells. However, the excessive increase in MHb causes respiratory changes and tissue hypoxia due to a deficiency of circulating oxygen. Felines are very susceptible to SM, which results from hereditary changes or exposure to oxidizing chemical agents. The objective of this review was to provide current information about the etiopathogenesis, clinical and diagnostic aspects, and therapeutic management of Feline Methemoglobinemia Syndrome (MFS) caused by drugs. A literature review was conducted based on the last 10 years of publications, considering the first and classic reports. Paracetamol was the main drug cited in the literature as an etiological chemical agent; the presumptive diagnosis of MFS is considered when the veterinary patient presents cyanosis and low oxygen saturation, confirmed by pulse co-oximetry and in the absence of cardiopulmonary disease; initial investigation such as the spot test and complementary exams can help the diagnosis; The basic treatment of MFS consists of early removal of the agent, the use of antidotes, oxygen therapy and control of clinical signs.","PeriodicalId":507127,"journal":{"name":"Pubvet","volume":"18 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140710126","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The feline leukemia virus (FeLV) is a retrovirus that belongs to the genus Gammaretrovirus and exclusively affects felids. The virus carries the reverse transcriptase enzyme, which integrates into the host's DNA permanently, leading to different clinical conditions. The main complications caused by FeLV are hematopoietic neoplasms, immune-mediated disorders, neurological alterations and immunosuppression, among other ailments. The disease has no effective treatment, but antiviral and immunomodulatory drugs are still under trial. Using Recombinant Human Interferon Alpha has shown to be helpful in reducing clinical symptoms and controlling opportunistic infections, increasing the quality and life expectancy of cats infected with FeLV. Retroviruses are among the main causes of death in domestic cats. The lack of knowledge about the disease among guardians and growing cat population in Brazil are helping to increase the number of FeLV cases. Although the disease lacks a universal veterinary medical protocol, there are new studies and information available that can help to treat infected animals, improving their quality of life and expectancy and, in some cases, potentially eliminating the virus. This fact clashes with another reality: outdated professionals who are not familiar with the guidelines for Feline Retrovirus Testing and Management from the AAFP (American Association of Feline Practitioners), an international entity that since 1971 has been working to improve feline health by providing evidence-based guidelines for veterinary practices. Population growth and diseases that exclusively affect the species also highlight the need to include a deeper understanding of feline health in the curricula of undergraduate courses, preparing these future professionals to meet the demand for updated veterinarians with sufficient knowledge to care for the species.","PeriodicalId":507127,"journal":{"name":"Pubvet","volume":"26 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140715662","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

O pescado é uma das fontes de proteína mais consumidas pelo humano. O peixe é o animal mais consumido do grupo. Em 1960, o consumo per capita era de 9,9 kg, passando para 11,5 kg em 1970 e chegando a 20,2 kg em 2020, evidenciando um crescimento gradual. No entanto, as fraudes na cadeia do pescado representam um grande desafio para produtores e comerciantes. A diversidade de espécies, a falta de padronização de nomes populares e produtos derivados nos mercados nacional e internacional tornam o grupo propício a fraudes no processamento e na comercialização. Este estudo revisou a literatura sobre o consumo de pescado no mundo e no Brasil, a frequente substituição de espécies na comercialização e a relevância de métodos de identificação para prevenir tais práticas e garantir a segurança do consumidor. A revisão concluiu que diversas espécies de peixes, tanto inteiros quanto processados, são falsificadas. No entanto, o consumo mundial de pescado vem aumentando gradativamente, enquanto no Brasil ainda está abaixo da média mundial. Em conclusão, as fraudes na cadeia do pescado são comuns e o consumo no Brasil ainda é baixo, abaixo do recomendado pela OMS. É necessário aumentar a divulgação sobre o pescado e seus benefícios para a saúde humana.","PeriodicalId":507127,"journal":{"name":"Pubvet","volume":"240 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140720129","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Patients may arrive in a state of shock, presenting serious systemic changes, such as hypotension, hypovolemia, tissue hypoperfusion, metabolic acidosis, among other disorders that can compromise the animal's life during an anesthetic and surgical procedure. Performing surgical procedures on dogs and cats with sepsis requires a meticulous approach, adapted to the individual conditions of each patient, where maintaining tissue perfusion and oxygenation is of great importance. Therefore, to manage hypotension, volume replacement with crystalloids is recommended. If there is no response, the use of vasoactive agents is indicated, such as norepinephrine, adrenaline, dobutamine and vasopressin. Furthermore, the use of corticosteroids, such as hydrocortisone, is recommended in cases of hypotension refractory to fluid therapy and vasopressors. The purpose of this literature review is to carry out a brief analysis of sepsis, highlighting the main measures for stabilizing septic patients in the pre-anesthetic period. The central focus lies in discussing the approach used for hemodynamic stabilization before the patient enters the operating room. A more in-depth understanding of anesthetic considerations in cases of sepsis may result in more efficient and less risky management of these patients, with a potential positive impact on the well-being of these individuals in such conditions. ","PeriodicalId":507127,"journal":{"name":"Pubvet","volume":"51 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140722765","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The disease is rare in dogs and cats, and when it occurs, it typically affects elderly animals. This study presents an atypical clinical case of a two-years-old Shih Tzu diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. The clinical presentation of the patient included characteristic signs of CLL, such as lymphocytosis, lymphadenomegaly, splenomegaly, and hepatomegaly. Observed symptoms included lethargy, fatigue, panting, and enlargement of the mandibular lymph nodes. Additionally, anemia and thrombocytopenia were identified, aligning with common patterns in dogs with CLL. The diagnosis was achieved through various examinations, including ultrasound, radiography, complete blood count, serum biochemistry, cytology, and parasitological tests (4DX and leishmaniasis). However, definitive confirmation of CLL was obtained through bone marrow examination. In response to the diagnosis, therapeutic intervention followed the protocol established in the literature, involving the administration of Chlorambucil and Prednisone. The results of the applied treatments reflected positively on the patient, demonstrating clinical improvement and stability. The adopted therapeutic protocol aimed to control symptoms and prolong the life of the affected animal. The objective of this study is to contribute to epidemiological data, elucidate the pathogenic course, and seek more effective diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for CLL in dogs. The detailed investigation of this case and the dissemination of results aim to provide a solid foundation for future research, with the goal of improving the quality of life for dogs affected by chronic lymphocytic leukemia.","PeriodicalId":507127,"journal":{"name":"Pubvet","volume":"8 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140734742","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
