Lupus erythematosus is one of these diseases that, in addition to affecting humans, is often diagnosed in dogs, and among its various classifications are systemic lupus erythematosus and discoid lupus erythematosus, which some authors believe to be a benign variation of the systemic lupus. The present study aims to report the case of a 9-year-old mixed-breed dog, rescued and kept in a veterinary clinic since its adoption as a puppy. In recent years, he has presented several dermatological manifestations, being seen by several clinicians with different empirical treatments without success in the therapeutic responses, then being referred to a dermatology specialist in search of a diagnosis. In this phase, the clinical signs were apathy, weight loss, facial (especially periocular) erythematous, ulcerated, and crusted lesions, moderate pruritus and loss of cobblestone architecture to the nasal planum. After screening for the underlying cause with cytological examination, there were signs for three differential diagnoses: lupus, ischemic dermatitis and dermatomyositis, requiring a biopsy for histopathological examination to define the cause. The diagnosis was then obtained as lymphoplasmacytic lichenoid dermatitis associated with edema and apoptosis of keratinocytes, a pattern compatible with discoid lupus erythematosus, demonstrating that the assertive choice of diagnostic methods was fundamental in implementing the correct treatment and obtaining the remission of the disease.","PeriodicalId":507127,"journal":{"name":"Pubvet","volume":"29 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-08-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141928696","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In males, the testes descend into the intrauterine scrotal sac. The absence of two testes in the scrotal sac after six months of age may indicate conditions such as testicular agenesis or cryptorchidism. In felines, cryptorchidism is rare (1-8%) compared to dogs (7-9%). Diagnosis involves anamnesis, palpation and abdominal ultrasonography, which is crucial in locating the testicle and planning for surgery. This case report describes a one-year-old male cat with unilateral abdominal cryptorchidism, which was successfully resolved through exploratory laparotomy and orchiectomy. The case highlights the importance of ultrasonography for the diagnosis and treatment of this condition.","PeriodicalId":507127,"journal":{"name":"Pubvet","volume":"22 8","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-08-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141926254","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Synanthropy is characterized by the potential transmission of diseases to humans. The One Health approach increasingly emphasizes the importance of veterinary medicine in animal and environmental healthcare, with a focus on human health. This review aims to identify, understand and discuss the impacts of synanthropic and wild fauna on animal, public and environmental health, as well as legal and forensic aspects within the framework of One Health. The challenges encompassing One Health challenge both veterinary medicine and the law. Veterinary expertise is a resource that can assist in legal matters relating to the environmental management of synanthropic and wild fauna. Humans exposed to synanthropic and wild animals are considered a risk factor for disease transmission. The presence of rodents in urban and rural areas generates economic and health problems as they transmit diseases directly or indirectly. The rodents involved in the transmission of leptospirosis are Rattus rattus, Rattus norvergicus and Mus musculus. Leptospirosis is a neglected disease transmitted both by rodents and wild animals. The understanding of this issue must communicate actions to public authorities to develop health and environmental education policies regarding this fauna in order to reduce, control or eliminate the risks of disease transmission. This review bases its information on the Pubmed platform, Google Scholar, articles and textbooks. Despite existing legislation, leptospirosis is still considered a neglected disease, and synanthropic and wild fauna represent a significant challenge to the One Health concept due to the lack of basic sanitation and poor urban infrastructure that facilitates the presence of this fauna, which cause health and economic problems for the population.","PeriodicalId":507127,"journal":{"name":"Pubvet","volume":"48 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141644596","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has a high death rate among dogs. Initial clinical signs are absent or minimal, making diagnosis difficult, and delaying treatment. An appropriate clinical examination, and laboratory and imaging tests should be carried out to detect early renal alterations. When CKD is diagnosed at a more advanced stage, clinical signs are already present and life expectancy is reduced. To classify the severity of the process, the International Renal Interest Society (IRIS) classifies the patient with chronic kidney disease into four stages, progressing according to the increase in serum creatinine and symmetrical dimethyl arginine (SDMA). In addition, IRIS also has two sub-stages that determine greater potential for progression, based on proteinuria and systemic blood pressure (SBP). If altered, the sub-stages can also be interpreted as staging, since the alteration present already classifies it as stage 1. Once the patient has CKD, staging is carried out and monitored, with the aim of stabilizing the patient, slowing down progression and increasing their quality of life.","PeriodicalId":507127,"journal":{"name":"Pubvet","volume":"6 10","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141652153","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite this, there is a need for improvement in productivity and profitability. The extensive model, despite territorial demand, exhibits low use of technologies and problematic management. Intensive livestock farming minimizes these issues, offering greater production efficiency by reducing the age at which cattle are finished and optimizing the use of space on the property. The choice of diet in confinement systems aims to enhance the cost/benefit ratio. This research aims to compare the performance of Nelore cattle subjected to different diets during the finishing phase in confinement, considering intake, productivity, carcass characteristics, and economic viability. For the experiment, 20 Nellore cattle were used, divided into two groups of 10 animals, where one received the treatment of feed + forage, and the other a high-grain diet. For the variables of average daily gain (ADG), total weight gain (TWG), and feed-lot time, there was no effect (P < 0.05) from the treatments. However, an effect (P < 0.05) on carcass yield between diets was observed, directly impacting the economic viability of beef cattle production, as the abattoir pays per kilogram (cwt) of carcass.","PeriodicalId":507127,"journal":{"name":"Pubvet","volume":"16 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141661073","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Large-scale control of the birth of puppies, through reproductive control measures, shows useful results in reducing or stabilizing the dog population. Such interventions can be achieved through sterilization programmes that continuously reach a satisfactory percentage for population control. Pet castration campaigns, using quick and legally compliant procedures, have been implemented in several cities, but little is known about the occurrence of post-operative complications in animals that undergo this type of action. The animals in this study presented various complications, including abscesses and bleeding. Milder and more common complications included diarrhea, vomiting, edema, agitation and apathy. In addition, one death was reported. Most of these complications can be avoided with good technique and preoperative examinations. It is therefore important that the veterinarians responsible for the campaigns are always aware of how to perform the technique correctly and with adequate asepsis, in order to avoid possible serious problems.","PeriodicalId":507127,"journal":{"name":"Pubvet","volume":" 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141671440","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Seven articles were selected for detailed analysis after a selection and exclusion process. The main clinical signs of puerperal hypocalcemia in bitches include muscular tetany, epileptic seizures, ataxia and tachypnea. This condition is more prevalent in small dogs in the postpartum period, aged between 3 and 4 years, and in medium to large litters. Different therapeutic approaches were discussed, highlighting the administration of 10% calcium gluconate and the importance of weaning the puppies as a crucial part of the animal's recovery process. The lack of uniformity in clinical and therapeutic aspects compromises the effectiveness of treatment, highlighting the pressing need for more research on the topic.","PeriodicalId":507127,"journal":{"name":"Pubvet","volume":"69 5","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141696711","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
