Results showed that students were satisfied with the subject (perceived learning experiences, achievement of learning objectives) and teaching of the staff member. Overall, students from Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Applied Science and Textiles showed more positive views about the subject, while less favorable SFQ ratings were observed in students of Faculty of Construction and Environment. Students’ performance in the subject was significantly predicted by their perceived teacher attributes but not subject attributes. Implications of the findings were discussed.","PeriodicalId":50278,"journal":{"name":"International Journal on Disability and Human Development","volume":"15 1","pages":"339 - 346"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67002196","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: The study included 265 healthy participants (17–69 years old), a group of 36 type 1 diabetes mellitus patients, including 15 patients with positive diagnosis of cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (CAN), and a group of 24 CAN positive type-2 spinocerebellar ataxia patients. HR and HRV indices were calculated for 5-min resting ECG recordings. The proposed correction method (CM) included the joint application of multiple regression analysis and Z-transformations of HR and HRV indices. To assess the effect of the CM, correlation analysis, multivariate factor analysis, and the ANOVA test were applied to both groups before and after corrections. Results: The CM was able to remove the effect of HR on HRV indices, and at the same time, were preserved the expected differences between HR and HRV indices between controls and patients. Sample size was not a factor. Conclusion: Our method may be considered a novel approach, and may represent an alternative to the use of currently developed procedures. Significance: Studies of HRV without an appropriately HR correction should not be considered in the future.","PeriodicalId":50278,"journal":{"name":"International Journal on Disability and Human Development","volume":"15 1","pages":"277 - 292"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1515/ijdhd-2015-0014","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67001707","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Standardised inventories such as, the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Test (SBIT), the Connors Parent Rating Scale-Revised (CPRS) and the Draw-a-Family test were used pre and post intervention. Scheduled interviews were used for parents and children to obtain information regarding family cohesiveness. A special program was designed to structure the home environment and to maximise parental involvement that catered to the “needy child” and this was implemented for 6 months after which the children were reassessed. Prior to the intervention, we observed deficits in cognitive skills and siblings had concerns in hyperactivity and oppositional behaviour. Scheduled interviews with siblings elicited responses that represented neglect, perceived differential treatment and negative emotional well-being. Projective tests revealed that family dynamics were disturbed and chaotic. Post intervention, we observed significant differences in the cognitive orientation, behavioural engagement and also in the interpersonal relationship within the family. We may conclude therefore, that parental involvement significantly predicts academic and psychosocial adjustment of siblings and this is an important implication for practitioners in developing early intervention programs.","PeriodicalId":50278,"journal":{"name":"International Journal on Disability and Human Development","volume":"15 1","pages":"243 - 250"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1515/ijdhd-2015-0008","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67001688","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Knowing the predictors of QOL might make the support programs more effective. In the present study, QOL of 152 persons with intellectual disability was assessed through the personal outcomes scale (POS)-self report. Total score on the POS was used as a dependent variable and age, sex, level of intellectual disability, employment status and marriage status were assessed as the potential predictors of QOL. The statistically significant predictors of QOL were level of intellectual disability and employment status. These predictors explained 19% of variance in POS scores. The results of this study indicate that the strategies aimed at increasing the QOL of people with disability must focus on finding and expanding the employment opportunities for people with intellectual disability. The role of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) can be very significant in this regard. The article concludes with a discussion of how predictors of QOL outcomes reported by other investigators could be incorporated into the policies and practices of NGOs to enhance person-referenced QOL outcomes.","PeriodicalId":50278,"journal":{"name":"International Journal on Disability and Human Development","volume":"15 1","pages":"299 - 304"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1515/ijdhd-2015-0017","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67001748","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A survey of the literature published in English, Italian, German, French, and Spanish language between 1994 and 2014 reported a total of 61 programs which have been evaluated by studies using quasi- or true experimental designs. Several observations are highlighted from this review. First, prevention programs outnumber positive youth development programs in Europe. Second, some countries spend significantly more effort and financial support on preventive programs than others. Third, some countries/regions deal with some specific adolescent problems more than other regions. Fourth, there are variations in the use of international standards for implementing and assessing programs as well as disseminating results. Finally, while most of the existing school-based programs are conducted at the local level, there are very few cross-country projects.","PeriodicalId":50278,"journal":{"name":"International Journal on Disability and Human Development","volume":"15 1","pages":"321 - 330"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1515/ijdhd-2015-0025","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67001814","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The beneficial effect or non-effectiveness of that molecule were studied biochemically using blood mean phosphorus (P) levels. Methods: Forty rats of mean weight 247.7 g were used in the study. P levels were measured at 60 min (groups A and C) and at 120 min (groups B and D) from reoxygenation. Epo was administered only in groups C and D. Results: Epo administration non-significantly increased P levels by 3.95%±3.35% (p=0.2100). Reperfusion time non-significantly decreased P levels by 0.35%±3.40% (p=0.9041). However, Epo administration and reperfusion time together produced a non-significant combined effect in increasing P levels by 2.45%±2.01% (p=0.2168). Conclusion: Epo administration, interacting or not with reperfusion time, has non-significant short-term increasing effects on P levels.","PeriodicalId":50278,"journal":{"name":"International Journal on Disability and Human Development","volume":"5 1","pages":"305 - 309"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1515/ijdhd-2015-0004","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67002143","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A disability in the family has the potential to disrupt the proper functioning of a family. Objectives: The main objective of this study is to know the mental and emotional condition of parents of children with intellectual and developmental disability (IDD) and to show the common view of parents towards the condition in their children. Methods: The study was conducted based on two levels. The first level involves one to one interviews with parents of 53 children attending a special school in the Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu state in India and was followed by a second level of the study which involved group discussions. Results: Among all the IDDs only Down syndrome can be recognized at the birth. Parents of a mentally disabled daughter have their fears further compounded. Due to such fears, parents have reported covering their daughter’s identity in public and have thought about the removal of their daughter’s reproductive organs. Conclusion: To avoid mismanagement of the child’s condition, basic medical training of the parents becomes imperative and they should be educated on the reproductive rights of daughters. Hence a holistic approach involving addressing the psychological, medical and financial issues facing affected families is necessary to bring about the healthy development of the IDD child.","PeriodicalId":50278,"journal":{"name":"International Journal on Disability and Human Development","volume":"15 1","pages":"293 - 297"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1515/ijdhd-2015-0016","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67001740","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Assistive technology might help them with both requirements. Methods: This study assessed an assistive technology package to (a) remind three adults with multiple (i.e. intellectual and sensory-motor) disabilities of the activities to carry out at the appropriate times of the day and (b) provide them pictorial instructions for the steps of those activities. It included a Galaxy S-3 mini smartphone (by Samsung) for delivering verbal reminders and a Microsoft Surface RT tablet for presenting pictorial instructions concerning the single steps of the activities programmed. The study was carried out according to a non-concurrent multiple baseline design across participants. Results: All three participants were successful in using both components of the technology package and managed to (a) independently start the activities at the scheduled times and (b) perform them with high levels of accuracy (i.e. with mean percentages of correct steps exceeding 90). Conclusion: A technology package may enable persons with multiple disabilities to perform complex activities at the appropriate times.","PeriodicalId":50278,"journal":{"name":"International Journal on Disability and Human Development","volume":"15 1","pages":"261 - 266"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1515/ijdhd-2015-0012","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67001696","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
