Linear mixed models utilizing individual growth curves were used to analyze the initial status and rate of change of moral competence with reference to gender, economic disadvantage, family intactness, family functioning and parent-child subsystem quality. Results showed that adolescent moral competence increased across 6 years. Female adolescents had higher initial levels of moral competence than that of male adolescents. Adolescents from well-functioning families had higher initial levels of moral competence but slower growth of moral competence than did those from families with lower family functioning. Adolescents with higher mother-child subsystem quality had higher initial levels of moral competence but slower growth of moral competence than did those with relatively lower mother-child subsystem quality. Finally, adolescents with higher father-child subsystem quality had higher initial levels of moral competence than those with relatively lower father-child subsystem quality.","PeriodicalId":50278,"journal":{"name":"International Journal on Disability and Human Development","volume":"15 1","pages":"433 - 442"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1515/ijdhd-2017-5010","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67002800","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Over six waves of data collection, students were invited to complete a questionnaire measuring emotional competence, paternal and maternal control, father-child and mother-child relationship, family functioning and socio-demographic characteristics. Results showed that adolescent emotional competence showed a linear increase across time. At the initial stage, gender, paternal and maternal control, father-child and mother-child relationship and family functioning influenced adolescent emotional competence. Over time, maternal control, mother-child relationship and family functioning predicted changes in the trajectory of adolescent emotional competence. The theoretical and practical implications of the findings are discussed.","PeriodicalId":50278,"journal":{"name":"International Journal on Disability and Human Development","volume":"15 1","pages":"397 - 408"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1515/ijdhd-2017-5007","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67002285","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has similarly been suggested that poetry writing offers students a way to express their feelings and emotions related to clinical issues, medical education, and their relationship with patients. The rhythmic structure and temporal organisation of poetry allow students to remember poetry more easily than prose, suggesting that important and detailed information could be better memorised through poetic text. To report on how poetry writing and reciting was used in a PBL class in nursing to enhance the students’ artistic ability, and on the students’ perspectives on artistry in their learning. This paper presented a part of results of a main educational study where data were collected through lesson observations, reflective notes, and a follow-up interview. A total of 17 Hong Kong students were encouraged to collaborate in groups and write English poems based on a clinical case. A content analysis was conducted on their reflective notes and narratives were extracted from an interview. Although the students learned about cooperation, creativity, thinking, stress management, how to make lively presentations, deep learning, long-term memory, and professional knowledge, they expressed that the above were indirectly related to artistry. Scholars from the fields of both health related disciplines and literature should collaborate in researching and developing some learning and teaching activities which can further enhance the students’ artistic ability so as to let them learn about empathy and understand patients’ sufferings and illness experiences.","PeriodicalId":50278,"journal":{"name":"International Journal on Disability and Human Development","volume":"16 1","pages":"37 - 44"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1515/ijdhd-2016-0003","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67002243","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Over 6 years, the students were invited to complete a questionnaire containing measures of psychosocial functioning including family functioning, parent-child subsystem quality and resilience. There was a slight decrease of resilience throughout adolescence. Adolescents having better parent-child subsystem quality and family functioning reported higher levels of resilience initially. However, better mother-child subsystem quality and family functioning were significantly associated with faster decrease in resilience, although adolescents with better parent-child subsystem quality and family functioning always reported higher resilience levels over 6 years. The findings suggest that strengthening family processes can help to promote resilience in adolescents in Hong Kong.","PeriodicalId":50278,"journal":{"name":"International Journal on Disability and Human Development","volume":"15 1","pages":"387 - 396"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1515/ijdhd-2017-5006","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67002273","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Additionally, the use of ICTs also has importance from the point of view of disabled people. Because of physical deficiencies, disabled people make more effort to access knowledge and services relative to healthy people. Also, they face some important constraints in urban spaces. The planning of urban spaces according to the requirements of disabled people is a necessity of being in a contemporary society. Furthermore, offering some opportunities for disabled people through ICTs should be considered. While healthy people do not have any limitations, disabled people face some important constraints in using these technologies. With this in mind, designing ICTs without considering disabled people will cause discrimination against them by society. In addition, e-learning and teleworking concepts, which have arisen together with ICTs, are an important perspective related to education and employment policies for disabled people. In this paper, the importance of considering the needs and problems of disabled people in accessing ICTs is emphasized, and also this paper aims to evaluate opportunities offered by new technologies for disabled people in Turkey. The uses of areas of ICTs seen as a tool in order to raise the quality of life of disabled people are evaluated, and the problems and opportunities are revealed. People with intellectual disabilities are not addressed within this study. Instead, it focuses on individuals with physical disabilities such as visual, hearing, and orthopedic impairment. Opportunities offered by ICTs for disabled people are evaluated. Also, recommendations are developed about the accessibility of disabled people to employment, education, health, and social and urban services in Turkey. Another aim of this paper is to create awareness for disabled people about the use of ICTs. Firstly, a literature review was done, and in addition to the print and electronic resources, suggestions and opinions were taken from public institutions and organizations. Furthermore, the needs and constraints of disabled people are explored for the use of ICTs by conducting in-depth interviews.","PeriodicalId":50278,"journal":{"name":"International Journal on Disability and Human Development","volume":"15 1","pages":"311 - 320"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1515/ijdhd-2015-0019","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67001753","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
