To reflect drug research and development (R&D) characteristics, we separate the alliance stage into “preclinical research” and “drug development,” and examine the effects of alliances with different partner types (public and private). An integrated firm-level dataset was created for empirical analysis by combining financial, alliance, patent, and new product data from 96 US pharmaceutical firms. We found that while a firm's uncertainty does not always significantly impact alliance activities, it positively influences certain innovation performance (new products). Furthermore, we probe the moderating effect of alliances on the relationship between uncertainty and innovation performance. The results revealed that alliances with public organizations strengthened the relationship in the “preclinical stage”; however, there was no significant effect in the “drug development” stage. Also, alliances with private firms even negatively moderates in “drug development stage” in some innovation performance. This study provides novel evidence that alliances can mitigate or exacerbate innovation performance depending on the alliance stage and partner type.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":50209,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Engineering and Technology Management","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":4.8,"publicationDate":"2023-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91987335","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite their pivoltal role, several transactional platforms fail in the launching phase, given the difficulties of reaching a critical mass and igniting cross-side network externalities. In this study we explore how a platform provider can introduce a collaborative framework from the earliest stages of platform development, aiming to highlight the benefits and challenges of moving towards a wider ecosystem through the involvement of other players. We introduce the role of platform enhancer, who is neither a supply side or a complementor, but a specific role aiming to support the platform provider in the launch and growth of the platform. We rely a single exploratory case study based on the Italian platform for digital identity, created and managed by the Italian Government through the support of a set of companies working as identity providers. Platform enhancers collaborate with the platform provider in the launch and development of a transactional platform, generating opportunities at both the launch and development stages, yet also substantial challenges and criticalities linked to increasing complexity, which climbs with the number of enhancers involved, producing coopetitive dynamics.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":50209,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Engineering and Technology Management","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":4.8,"publicationDate":"2023-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67740096","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Experts rely on patent valuation techniques that use resources like the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). This study contributes to patent value research by examining the relationship between the geographic distance among collaborating inventors and patent value indicators. Scholars have suggested that the value of an invention increases as the geographic distance between co-inventors grows. To test this proposition, the study conducted a regression analysis on a dataset of over two million USPTO patents. The analysis controlled for patent and inventor characteristics and consistently found a positive influence of geographic distance on patent value. These findings challenge assumptions and offer insights into collaborative innovation dynamics. They have significant implications for innovation management, urging inventors and organizations to carefully consider spatial factors and recognize the advantages of extended geographic distances when forming collaboration networks. By strategically selecting partners, inventors can optimize patent value, foster innovation, and navigate the evolving intellectual property landscape effectively.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":50209,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Engineering and Technology Management","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":4.8,"publicationDate":"2023-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134657853","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
