A cross-sectional survey was conducted at the National Association of School Nurses Annual Conference in July 2023, gathering data on attitudes and knowledge regarding firearm violence prevention. Of the 363 respondents (65% response rate), 98% were female, and 44.9% had under 10 years of experience. Nearly half reported firearm ownership, and 39% had encountered incidents involving a student bringing a firearm to school. Most nurses (86%) reported having a firearm emergency plan at their schools, yet only 8% had training on counseling for firearm safety. Despite 41% receiving firearm safety training, many nurses expressed a need for more resources and training in firearm violence prevention. These findings highlight the need for specialized, culturally informed, and medically accurate training to better equip school nurses in addressing firearm safety and violence prevention in schools.</p>","PeriodicalId":50058,"journal":{"name":"Journal of School Nursing","volume":" ","pages":"10598405251339655"},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2025-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144043349","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A scoping review was conducted using Arksey and O'Malley's framework to examine how school nurses contribute to fostering positive sexuality through sexual education in schools. Out of 406 unique articles screened, 17 met the inclusion criteria. The majority were from the USA and England. The findings highlight the significant contributions of school nurses in sexual education programs. However, it also indicates a need for broader representation, particularly from Nordic countries. A more diverse perspective could enrich understanding and practices in promoting sexual health among youth. The findings also emphasize the preference of youth for external, qualified educators such as school nurses to deliver sexual education. The study calls for more research to enhance sexual health promotion among youth.</p>","PeriodicalId":50058,"journal":{"name":"Journal of School Nursing","volume":" ","pages":"10598405251337769"},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2025-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144019959","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With social determinants impacting student medical compliance, school nurses lack evidence-based interventions to reduce medical exclusion. This quality improvement project aims to reduce medical exclusion at the project site by 25% from the previous year by focusing on meeting the freshman physical examination requirement. A three-pronged PDSA cycle evaluates each program intervention [resource guides, phone calls, temporary health clinic] in reducing medical exclusion. After the distribution of two resource guides, 93 personalized phone calls were made to families with missing health documentation. On the first day of school, 28 freshmen remained out of medical compliance. The temporary on-site health clinic provided physical examinations to 13 of the 28 students. Through a systematic approach operationalizing community partnerships, school nurses can reduce barriers to achieving medical compliance and support student agencies in accessing healthcare.</p>","PeriodicalId":50058,"journal":{"name":"Journal of School Nursing","volume":" ","pages":"10598405251333426"},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2025-04-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144062959","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study investigates health-related quality of life (QOL) and related factors among siblings of students attending special-needs schools in Japan. A cross-sectional study was conducted with two groups: 71 siblings of children with disabilities and a control group of 398 siblings of typically developing children, using the KINDLR QOL scale. Results showed a median QOL score for siblings of children with disabilities of 72.92 versus 71.88 for siblings of typically developing children (<i>p </i>= 0.711). This lack of significant difference may be attributed to existing social support systems and special-needs schools in Japan, which may reduce the burden on siblings of children with disabilities. Several struggles involved organizational support, including having sufficient time, resources, compensation, and school leadership support. The purpose of this mixed methods study was to explore the experiences of school nurses working during the COVID-19 pandemic as they related to sufficient time to complete COVID-related activities, sufficient COVID-19 resources, compensation, and perceived organizational (school leadership) support. We obtained data from 1,564 National Association of School Nurses members regarding respondent characteristics, school characteristics, measures of organizational support, and qualitative perceived organizational support using a 17-question survey. Perceptions of having sufficient time to complete COVID-related tasks and infringement of these tasks on routine activities were worse for those with greater years of experience and education. Compensation for additional COVID-related work was more favorable for LPNs. We administered a nationwide survey in 2021, guided by the Framework for the 21st Century School Nurse, and analyzed self-reported changes in mental health interventions by school nurses. Most mental health practice changes after the start of the pandemic occurred in the care coordination (52.8%) and community/public health (45.8%) principles. An overall decrease in students visiting the school nurse's office (39.4%) was seen, yet the frequency of students visiting with mental health concerns had increased (49.7%). A qualitative exploratory methodology was used with a purposive sample of 30 high-school students regarding their experiences of the self-perceived impact of COVID-19 on their mental health. Data were thematically analyzed using Braun and Clarke method. Three main themes emerged from the data: (a) the challenge of living confined, (b) the footprint of COVID-19 on adolescents' mental health, and (c) school dynamics during the lockdown. The COVID-19 pandemic negatively impacted adolescents' mental health, and adolescents perceived a lack of emotional support from educational centers.
