Private universities in Japan provide information processing education (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for international students as well as Japanese students. Japanese students are educated on personal computers, including education at school and by their families. On the other hand, there is little information on PC education for foreign students in Asian countries. A rubric assessment, semi-structured interviews, and verbal data collection were conducted in order to conduct qualitative data analysis. The advantages of working online were that participants could spend their time freely and concentrate on their work. Also, due to not having to travel overseas, the participants did not feel tired. Future PBL will also proceed with a hybrid of online and face-to-face. Unfortunately, students sometimes use this same technology to compose essays by simply copying and pasting translated passages without having to actually think about the English they are writing. This paper explores the possibilities of adding an “off-line” component to the AI-supported process of writing and correcting essays. First, students write essays by hand without using computers or tablets and use the AI program Optical Character Recognition (OCR) which reads and digitizes the script. As a result, discussions with students became more difficult, leading to a deterioration of student outcomes. Therefore, a workshop consisting of group work and reflection was conducted to have the students introduce a foundational thinking mindset for identifying and solving problems on their own. As a result, the quality of the graduation thesis was improved, and the survey results indicated that the students themselves felt more confident in their work. Based on these results, we showed that the workshop was effective in promoting a change in the students’ awareness in the early stages of their graduation research.
