Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) records were retrospectively analyzed. MATERIAL AND METHODS CBCT records of 64 patients with unilateral impacted canine teeth (57.8% female and 42.2% male) and 64 controls (59.4% female and 40.6% male) were retrospectively analyzed. On the CBCT images, intermolar width, arch length, arch perimeter, palatal width in the molar region at cementoenamel junction, palatal width in the molar region at the crest, palatal width in the molar region measured from mid-root level, nasal cavity width, and palatal depth were evaluated. RESULTS In the palatal width measurement from the mid-root variable, the measurement of labially positioned canines was significantly lower than the control group (P<0.05). In terms of intermolar width, the labial positioned impacted canines' values were lower than in the control group. There was a significant difference in terms of the perimeter variable and both palatinally and labially positioned impacted canines were significantly lower than in the control group (P<0.05). All parameters were compared according to sex, and measurements of male patients were significantly higher than in female patients (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS A labially impacted canine was strongly linked to a decrease in mid-root palatal and intermolar widths. Additionally, impacted canines positioned both palatally and labially were found to result in a reduced arch perimeter. Moreover, male patients with impacted canines exhibited notably greater anatomical measurements compared to female patients.</p>","PeriodicalId":48888,"journal":{"name":"Medical Science Monitor","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":3.1,"publicationDate":"2024-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11143915/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141159282","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This split-mouth study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of photobiomodulation on reversal of local anesthesia in 50 children aged 8-10 years. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study was conducted among 50 children: 27 girls and 23 boys, aged 8-10 years (mean age 9.38±1.15 years), who presented 2 carious maxillary permanent molars. One side was randomly assigned to the laser group (50 teeth), and the contralateral side to the control group (50 teeth). At the end of the treatment, photobiomodulation (PBM) was performed in the area of infiltration at 6 points, with 635 nm (25 children) (250 mW, 500 mW/cm², 15J) and 808 nm (25 children) (200 mW, 400 mW/cm², 12J) (SmartM PRO, Lasotronix, Poland). On the contralateral side, the laser's off-mode applicator was used. Anesthetic effect was evaluated by palpation test (soft tissues) and electrical test (dental pulp). RESULTS After 15 minutes, in the laser group the return to normal sensations in the palpation test showed 88% (808 nm) and 68% (635 nm), and only 20% in the control group (P=0.04123). After 45 minutes, all the participants from the PBM group returned to normal sensations (P=0.21458). Dental pulp's excitability threshold was lower for both wavelengths compared to the control group (P=0.000001). CONCLUSIONS The identification of factors accelerating the recovery time to normal function, such as PBM, can be used as important data to eliminate self-injury secondary to local anesthesia (LA) in children.</p>","PeriodicalId":48888,"journal":{"name":"Medical Science Monitor","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":3.1,"publicationDate":"2024-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11131430/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141093897","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, its impact in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is less well understood. Herein, we explored the prognostic and energy metabolism reprogramming role of MRTO4 in HCC. MATERIAL AND METHODS Clinical data were obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), and the expression of MRTO4 in clinical samples was analyzed. The association between different variables and overall survival (OS) was studied, as well as their potential as independent prognostic factors, using Cox regression analysis. We constructed a nomogram including clinical pathological variables and MRTO4 expression to provide a predictive model for prognosis. Heatmaps, Gene Ontology (GO), and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis revealed the relationship between energy metabolism pathways and MRTO4. We used classic molecular biology research methods, including RT-qPCR, Western blotting, CCK8, TUNEL, Clone formation, Transwell assay, ELISA, and immunohistochemistry, to study the role of MRTO4 in promoting the progression of HCC through glycolysis regulation. RESULTS Our study showed that MRTO4 is an independent prognostic risk factor for HCC and that MRTO4 accelerates glycolysis of HCC cells, promotes proliferation and invasion, and suppresses apoptosis of HCC cells. The underlying mechanism involves MRTO4 promoting glycolysis and accelerating HCC by inhibiting ALDOB. CONCLUSIONS Our study revealed a novel mechanism by which MRTO4 promotes glycolysis and accelerates HCC progression, and suggests that inhibiting MRTO4 could be a potential therapeutic strategy for HCC.</p>","PeriodicalId":48888,"journal":{"name":"Medical Science Monitor","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":3.1,"publicationDate":"2024-05-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11131431/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141082163","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is a multi-organ disorder that remains one of the main causes of maternal morbidity and mortality. Additionally, preeclampsia leads to many complications that can occur in the fetus or newborn. Preeclampsia occurs in about 1 in 20 pregnant women. This review focuses on the prediction of preeclampsia in women, using various biomarkers, in particular, a factor combining the use of soluble FMS-like tyrosinokinase-1 (sFlt-1) and placental growth factor (PlGF). A low value of the sFlt-1/PlGF ratio rules out the occurrence of preeclampsia within 4 weeks of the test result, and its high value predicts the occurrence of preeclampsia within even 1 week. The review also highlights other factors, such as pregnancy-associated plasma protein A, placental protein 13, disintegrin and metalloprotease 12, ß-human chorionic gonadotropin, inhibin-A, soluble endoglin, nitric oxide, and growth differentiation factor 15. Biomarker testing offers reliable and cost-effective screening methods for early detection, prognosis, and monitoring of preeclampsia. Early diagnosis in groups of women at high risk for preeclampsia allows for quick intervention, preventing the undesirable effects of preeclampsia. However, further research is needed to validate and optimize the use of biomarkers for more accurate prediction and diagnosis. This article aims to review the role of biomarkers, including the sFlt1/PlGF ratio, in the prognosis and management of preeclampsia.</p>","PeriodicalId":48888,"journal":{"name":"Medical Science Monitor","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":3.1,"publicationDate":"2024-05-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11131432/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141088857","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
