This review summarizes experimental, translational, and clinical data linking myostatin to pituitary biology, including recent mouse evidence identifying muscle-derived myostatin as an endocrine driver of FSH synthesis via activin-type II/TGFBR1 signaling, with human confirmation pending. We analyze how pituitary disorders – growth hormone deficiency, acromegaly, hypercortisolism, central thyroid disease, central hypogonadism, and hypopituitarism – modify myostatin signaling, contributing to sarcopenia, anabolic resistance, and metabolic dysfunction. Across these conditions, human evidence remains limited and confounded by assay heterogeneity and comorbidities, as circulating myostatin often fails to mirror intramuscular changes. We propose an evidence framework emphasizing standardized assays (mature vs latent forms), longitudinal clinical cohorts, and integration of hormonal and functional endpoints. Myostatin remains a promising yet unvalidated biomarker and therapeutic target in endocrine-related muscle disease.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":48650,"journal":{"name":"Endocrinologia Diabetes Y Nutricion","volume":"73 4","pages":"Article 501757"},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2026-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147727085","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of malnutrition, sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity in patients with heart failure, assess their quality of life, and eventually reassess their nutritional status.</div></div><div><h3>Methodology</h3><div>We conducted an observational study of patients with heart failure randomly referred by thecCardiology department and examined from 2021 through 2022 in the Nutrition department and then re-evaluated in 2024. The diagnosis of malnutrition was established using the GLIM criteria; sarcopenia was diagnosed according to EWGSOP2, and sarcopenic obesity according to the ESPEN/EASO criteria.</div></div><div><h3>Results</h3><div>A total of 41 patients were evaluated between 2021 and 2022, of whom 23 were re-evaluated in 2024. A total of 82.6% were men (mean age, 64 yeras [SD, 10.6]). Initially the prevalence of malnutrition was 21.7%; sarcopenia, 8.7%; and sarcopenic obesity, 4.3%. Caloric and protein requirements were not reached in 63.2% and 47.4%, respectively. A total of 26.1% of patients had a low calf circumference (CC) value; 100% had low lower limb strength, 90.9% had low gait speed, and 50% had low stability. All patients (100%) had a good quality of life as assessed by the MLHFQ questionnaire. At reassessment, the prevalence of malnutrition was 21.7%; sarcopenia, 17.4%; and sarcopenic obesity, 8.7%. Caloric and protein requirements were not reached in 60.9% and 78.3%, respectively. Furthermore, 52.2% had low CC value, 100% had low lower limb strength, 91.3% had low speed and 43.5% had low stability. Adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) may engage in restrictive dieting or insulin manipulation to control weight, risking severe complications. Among modifiable risk factors, vitamin D (VD) deficiency has been increasingly associated with both the development of DM and the presence of depressive symptoms. Given the relevance of psychological health in diabetes management, exploring the interrelationship between VD, depression, and diabetes is of growing scientific interest. To investigate this triad, we conducted a systematic review of human cohort studies across PubMed and Web of Science, focusing on the relationship between VD status and depression in diabetic patients. Meta-analyses were performed with Review Manager (RevMan 5.3, Cochrane, London, United Kingdom) using the inverse variance method, and funnel plots assessed publication bias. Despite the limited and heterogeneous literature, pooled analyses revealed a significant inverse association between VD levels and depression in diabetes (OR, 0.90, 95%CI, 0.84–0.96). Future longitudinal and interventional studies are needed to clarify causal pathways, considering sex differences and body composition. Confirming this relationship could inform preventive strategies that improve the quality of life of diabetic patients through targeted nutritional and vitamin-based interventions.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":48650,"journal":{"name":"Endocrinologia Diabetes Y Nutricion","volume":"73 4","pages":"Article 501743"},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2026-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147727121","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
