While emergent leadership has much relevance in today's organizations transitioning from vertical to horizontal leadership, there is a paucity of research about the process of emergent leadership that enables team members to become influential within teams.Design/methodology/approachUsing purposive sampling, we interview 40 individuals in nine agile teams working in five Information Technology firms.FindingsWe identify various traits, experiences, behaviors, skills, and abilities of emergent leaders. Broadly, we conclude that an emergent leader serves as a “detail-oriented structure” or a “big picture coordinator.” Based on the findings, we propose a leadership emergence process that details how team members gain status and emerge as leaders, as well as the factors that can cause them to lose that status and return to becoming a regular team member. Furthermore, we introduce a model that demonstrates how technical expertise and personality traits interact, influencing team dynamics and facilitating the emergence of leaders within a team.Originality/valueWe contribute to the literature on emergent leadership by conceptualizing lateral influence and a leadership emergence process. We also extend the agile leadership literature and address some calls for empirical studies to understand the leadership dynamics in agile teams. Structural equation modeling and PROCESS macro were used to analyze the data.</p><!--/ Abstract__block -->\u0000<h3>Findings</h3>\u0000<p>The results indicate that market culture is positively related to innovation performance and absorptive capacity mediates this relationship. It is also found that resistance to change negatively moderates the relationship between market culture and innovation performance, but it has no moderating effect on the relationship between absorptive capacity and innovation performance.</p><!--/ Abstract__block -->\u0000<h3>Originality/value</h3>\u0000<p>Previous research examining the association between market culture and innovation performance is scarce and provides contradictory findings. This indicates that there is an underlying mechanism of this association neglected before. This study is an attempt to reconcile contradictory findings and enlighten the fuzzy areas of this relationship. Accordingly, this study focuses on absorptive capacity as a mediator and proves its role empirically. Moreover, this study is the first to examine the role of resistance to change and demonstrates its buffer role in the market culture-innovation performance link. It is also revealed that resistance to change does not moderate the relationship between absorptive capacity and innovation performance. Therefore, this article's central objective is to pinpoint the risks affecting the integration of supply chain technologies for enduring outcomes. Subsequently, these risks will be organized into a hierarchical structure, facilitating a clearer comprehension of their direct and indirect interconnections.</p><!--/ Abstract__block -->\u0000<h3>Design/methodology/approach</h3>\u0000<p>A combined TISM and quantitative approach has been used to build the hierarchal structure and to validate the direct, and indirect relationship among risks adopting supply chain technologies. A total of 41 respondents participated in the TISM survey, which resulted in creating a level hierarchical structure. Further, 233 responses are used for the quantitative study using SEM to validate the model obtained from TISM.</p><!--/ Abstract__block -->\u0000<h3>Findings</h3>\u0000<p>The study's findings indicated the social risks come out with the highest driving power. This includes the fear of job displacement, community disparity and change in the work culture of an organization. At the same time, technological risks can cause system integration, scalability issues, obsolesce compatibility issues, system failures and supply chain sustainability issues.</p><!--/ Abstract__block -->\u0000<h3>Originality/value</h3>\u0000<p>The novelty of the study can be found in the developed framework and its subsequent confirmation via quantitative evaluation. The first step of this transformation can be understanding comprehensively environmental performances of enterprises. This study presents a practical analysis for evaluation of factors affecting environmental performance of enterprises to call them as a “dark green.”</p><!--/ Abstract__block -->\u0000<h3>Design/methodology/approach</h3>\u0000<p>For this purpose, a detailed factor search was primarily performed and then the weights of them on environmental performance of the enterprises to support sustainable development were analyzed using fuzzy cognitive map (FCM) that incorporates the casual relationships between factors and represents the dynamics of the complex systems. The FCM was also supported with extended great deluge algorithm (EGDA), which is an evolutionary algorithm with high performance to increase robustness of the study.</p><!--/ Abstract__block -->\u0000<h3>Findings</h3>\u0000<p>The findings indicated that the most influential factors on environmental performance of an activist enterprise are “loyalty to regulations,” “digitalization level,” “tendency to produce environmentally friendly products/services,” “productivity efforts” and “fossil fuel consumption,” respectively. Quality focus is used as a moderator between global technological competence and international performance.</p><!--/ Abstract__block -->\u0000<h3>Design/methodology/approach</h3>\u0000<p>Data were gathered through a survey, and PLS-SEM was employed for hypotheses testing with a sample of 256 BG SMEs.</p><!--/ Abstract__block -->\u0000<h3>Findings</h3>\u0000<p>The results showed that market intelligence, EO, global technological competence and quality focus positively relate to international performance. Moreover, market intelligence and EO are positively associated with global technological competence. Besides, global technological competence significantly mediates the relationship between market intelligence, EO and international performance. It emphasizes the importance of understanding how information systems (IS) support not only individual tasks but also processes as a whole. The results reveal that process practices have not been considered comprehensively and even core processes may be unseen.</p><!--/ Abstract__block -->\u0000<h3>Design/methodology/approach</h3>\u0000<p>A systematic literature review was conducted to explore the extent to which teachers’ processes are discussed in the literature. A qualitative case study was then conducted at a Finnish higher education institution to identify course processes and their relationships to IS.</p><!--/ Abstract__block -->\u0000<h3>Findings</h3>\u0000<p>Teachers’ processes have scarcely been discussed in the literature, and the process support provided by ISs is remarkably limited. It seems that course processes, which are core to education, are a blind spot in education digitalization. To support evaluating the level of support by IS, novel course process indicators were introduced.</p><!--/ Abstract__block -->\u0000<h3>Practical implications</h3>\u0000<p>Developing core processes, teachers’ course processes and thesis processes in education field, supports improving service quality. In all industries, organizations should consider whether processes are properly recognized and whether IS support not only individual tasks but also processes as a whole. {"title":"Bridging governance gaps: politically connected boards, gender diversity and the ESG performance puzzle in Iberian companies","authors":"Rui Guedes, Maria Elisabete Neves, Elisabete Vieira","doi":"10.1108/bpmj-01-2024-0039","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1108/bpmj-01-2024-0039","url":null,"abstract":"<h3>Purpose</h3>\u0000<p>The main goal of this paper is to analyse the impact of political connections and gender diversity shaping Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) components’ effects on the performance of Iberian companies.</p><!--/ Abstract__block -->\u0000<h3>Design/methodology/approach</h3>\u0000<p> To achieve this aim, we have used panel data methodology, specifically the generalized method of moments system estimation method by Arellano and Bond (1991), using data from listed Iberian companies for the period between 2015 and 2020.</p><!--/ Abstract__block -->\u0000<h3>Findings</h3>\u0000<p>Our findings suggest that, although ESG components positively influence company performance, the presence of political connections weakens ESG commitments, compromising ethical standards and suggesting a lack of transparency or inadequate regulations. Our results also highlight that the presence of women on boards of directors has a nuanced impact on firm performance, as measured by the Market-to-Book ratio. While gender diversity interacts with ESG scores, external investors' perceptions may not always reflect immediate performance improvements.</p><!--/ Abstract__block -->\u0000<h3>Research limitations/implications</h3>\u0000<p>This work faces some limitations associated with challenges in securing comprehensive data for all variables, along with the complexity of acquiring information about political connections. Often, we had to rely on multiple sources and cross-reference the data to enhance its reliability. In the quantitative phase, structural equation modeling is used to rank these components from the perspective of 75 randomly selected economic operators from different economic sectors of Gilan province.</p><!--/ Abstract__block -->\u0000<h3>Findings</h3>\u0000<p>According to the participants, the main factors influencing EODB in Gilan province are: (1) public services and infrastructure; (2) political stability and the government; (3) policies, laws and regulations and (4) security of property rights.</p><!--/ Abstract__block -->\u0000<h3>Practical implications</h3>\u0000<p>Identifying factors conducive to the business environment can play an effective role in removing the barriers to achieving the goals of development programs, such as economic growth and reducing unemployment, poverty and inflation. Gilan province, in particular, is in a favorable condition in terms of climate and geography, with an abundance of young, specialized human resources, which can help remove barriers to improving the business environment and facilitate the use of these capacities. The University of São Paulo and Queensland University of Technology were the most prolific institutions. Significant emerging trends identified include Strategic Management, Digital Transformation, and IoT.
